Peterson Elizabethan Mixture

(3.04)
Notes: Elizabethan Mixture was launched by Dunhill and made in London until production was transferred to sister company Murray and Sons in 1981. It was made in Belfast until new owners BAT closed the Murray factory in 2005. Dunhill's Elizabethan combines pressed, darkened Virginias with a dose of perique (all ribbon-cut) to create an easy-to-enjoy blend with a tangy character and a bit of pepper spice. Elizabethan has been made since its 2013 reintroduction by STG after being unavailable since 2005, firstly under the Dunhill brand and now as a Peterson product after Dunhill withdrew their brand from the pipe tobacco market.

I like this tobacco for what it is, a spicy Virginia-Perique blend with plenty of spicy sweetness that you would expect from this combination, but I find Sutliff crumble cake a superior pipe tobacco. Why? Because the crumble cake is much smoother and doesn’t leave moisture in my cob. It could be that the cake was older than this one and some of the rough edges were aged out, but I can only go by what I experienced. .Several years ago I started making home brewed beers with some “real deal” brewers that taught me how to malt all grain barley for my sugars and got into judging those home brews for National recognition and we were taught to judge based on a specific style as opposed to our personal preferences and that’s how I try to review pipe tobacco. I say this because I see quite a few negative reviews for tobaccos that others including myself rate highly and I suspect that those smokers are biased towards tobaccos that they like and not on the quality of the product under review. I will buy this again and put it up for a while and see where it goes from there.

Loads of breadiness, nuts, & bit of spice. A bit of citrus but yet little brightness overall. A dark, earthy, full bodied VA experience. Later the bowl gets a little creamy and plummy. A little bit of a rough edge, but it's welcomed. Doesn't bite much. Takes quite litterally the bare minimum of effort to pack, light, and smoke, and packs of lot of body, which is a nice change after smoking a ton of brighter VA flakes. Nicotine is on the high side of medium, some may see this as medium/strong. Does leave quite an unpleasant and strong room note, not terribly important to me but it's worth noting

I could see how this would be someone's go-to all-day VaPer. It's not super interesting but it doesn't bore you either. It's rather stout in body for a VA, but won't overwhelm most people. The nicotine is just about perfect in a medium/large bowl. Very smooth, creamy, quality tobacco. Nothing stunning, but a solid, basic smoke.

Presentation: I don't care what anyone says, the tin is beautiful.

Cut: Comes as the standard (and perfect) STG ribbon cut. Also was at approximately perfect moisture, perhaps a touch to the moist side.

Tin note: Sweet fruit and figs with a slight hay aroma.

Tasting notes: Sweetness is mostly fruity with the slightest bit of hay. The periquey spice is definitely there, but does not take over the blend, just enough to be noticed and appreciated. This is not a "spicy" blend.

Mechanics: This blend will pack and smoke just fine. Slow down and pay attention to pick up on the nuance of this blend.

Extra Remarks: It took me a while to like this blend. On several occasions I would smoke a bowl and go "what's so special about this blend?". This blend is a medium in flavor and strength for me. I tend to pefer fuller blends, but this blend is beautifully balanced which gives it a level of complexity, which I can appreciate. Very good now that I have come around to it. 3 stars.

Peterson Elizabethen mixture is typical fine long/ short ribbon strands that pack easy and need little to no dry time in the Dunhill tradition. Tangy and fruity like raisons and figs . Lots of red and black pepper spice . A few flecks of brighter Virginias add to sweetness with few grassy notes . A fairly sweet blend . Just the right amount of Perique for the blend that gets not quite to medium nic hit but satisfying for sure . All day type of smoke . 3 1/2 stars

Earthy Simplicity

The Virginias varietals are earthy and slightly tangy with some complexity. There is just enough perique to add a deep richness and some spice to the smoke. While I prefer the intensity of G.L. Pease Telegraph Hill, I enjoy Elizabethan Mixture and would not change a thing.

I really do not recall a big difference between this and the last version. Placebo effect perhaps but i feel the perique is less. Very good virginias and mild with no tongue bite. Very subtle all day smoke. The cut is fine ribbon and the smell is very faint of fermented virginia. Now murray version was much more pungent but thats none ressurectable. I hope this pass as a legit replacement for those who remorse the loss of the last one but on its own right its a good blend. Al janabi

This is a lovely tobacco. It does indeed carry itself with a classic, expected Virginia taste with hints of hay and grassiness. The Perique, however, was a pleasant surprise. Not only does it add another dimension to the standard Virginia flavor, but it also enhances it, making it much more interesting. I find that the flavor of it changes, as different, more subtle flavors pick up throughout a smoke. For those less adventurous, this blend provides a more nuanced Virginia experience. Sweet, grassy, and spicy!

I think I made the mistake of assuming all Dunhill products were English and relied on the use of Latakia, but as I try to sample as many as possible before they scurry back into history, I found yet another Virginia focused blend to try. It has a sweet and lightly spicy odor attached to the usual barn smell I associate with a Virginia. It made for a welcome tin opening.

The contents were a bit damp, yet the texture was spongy and the shreds thin enough to make for some great pipe packing, lighting up was a breeze. There were few frills in the flavor and the Perique was fairly tame. I was happy with the lack of complexity, since it was really just a pleasant easy smoke. There was no bite and mild enough to smoke repetitive bowls, nor did I ever get burned out on the taste.

I can't say I'll miss this one when it's gone, since I can take-or-leave a good Virginia, yet it was one of the better ones I've come across and worth tracking down if you live on that side of the tracks.

My short & sweet review .... When I'm in the mood for a VaPer that's just slightly more Perique-forward (spicy) than the delicious Dunhill Navy Flake (sweet) or Escudo (even sweeter) ... this is the one that I choose. As others have noted it lights easily and burns down to a fine white ash yet doesn't finish the race with a cigarette-like taste. It does seem to burn faster than the aforementioned VaPer blends so for me it's a "short smoke" in my preferred smaller bowl sizes. Good stuff and I recommend it.

I don't know from previous era's Elizabethan Mixture. I can't comment on the comparison of each manufacturers version. The current version, however, is a solid VaPer. The moisture out of the tin is exactly as I prefer it. Needs very little dry time. The Virginias are sweet with plum and bready flavors that are vaguely similar to Royal Yacht. The Perique content seems relatively high. A nice manageable amount of spice and pepper with some raisin flavor. My favorite part of this blend is how the Virginias marry to the Perique. They combine to build a white wine-like flavor. Solid medium nicotine hit, not as bold as Bayou Morning but still noticeable. The room note is very cigarette like.
