Trying EMP for the first time it wasn't bad. Differnet from what I am use to, mostly aromatics. The Virginian's stand out considerably.
After smoking EMP a few times it begins to irritate ones tounge, and seems to be rather bitter. This did not occur in smoking the same pipe continually. The bitter taste was detected in four different pipes.
While EMP is not the best, it certainly is not the worst. A few more tins will be cellared and in a few years, there may be a few changes to this review.

Pretty mild stuff this is. Nothing exciting, but it is a relatively enjoyable smoke nonetheless. Compared to many of Dunhill's stronger English blends, the Orientals in EMP seem to have a more dominant role. Unfortunately, they aren't flavorful enough to carry the blend, leaving EMP with a relatively anticlimactic quality that vexes me to some degree. Dunhill's next step up, 965, is about as mild an English blend as I can enjoy and therefore EMP simply tends to fall off my radar. However, like the rest of the Dunhill English line, it is a quality blend that smokes well. Perhaps those lilylivered types that are put off by the potency of the other Dunhills might enjoy this lightweight treat quite a bit. As for me, there are greater rewards to be had in fuller English blends.

I'm a relatively new and ocasional smoker and bought a tin of this after reading the reviews on this site. I quite enjoyed this blend, but find it a touch harsh on the throat; perhaps EMP is better suited for a more frequent/ experienced smoker? I love the aroma in the tin (a leathery, woody smell), although this does not really come across in the smoking experience itself. The tobacco is best left to air for half an hour prior to smoking, after which it packs and lights relatively easily. Few re-lights are required, and I agree with reviewers who comment on the campfire/ burning Autumn leaves aroma. A great nicotine hit too, however this tobacco is not really for me.

This has a higher Virginia content than does 965. It is nicely done because it doesn?t bite as much as some other English blends heavy on the VA, but it packs a much higher nicotine wallop than most. As with 965, it is not my first choice in the Dunhill lineup. But if I am seeking a strong nicotine jolt, this is a good one to go to.

I think I've sampled a bad tin. This blend is bitter, bites like a pirhana, and seems too "green". That said I might try another tin if I can find an aged one. I do believe I may have recived too young a tin. With all the positive reviews and the longevity of this blend I must have gotten a bad one. Oh well. I'll stick with Rajah's Court. 11/10/04

As EMP's 59th reviewer what could I say that hasn't been mentioned? For me, it is on the ho-hum side - a second-fiddle to Standard Mixture Medium for sure. But, all things considered, it IS a nice smoke, likely a very nice "intro" smoke for someone wanting to flirt with English blends and, if such a person asked me for a short-list of such smokes, EMP would definitely be on it, if for no other reason than the typical Dunhill quality. EMP, though not in my stable of regulars, is very welcome to 3 full stars.

I believe it is called "Early Morning Pipe" as to truly savor it, you must have a relatively fresh palate. I first tried smoking EMP after pipes of 965, Night Cap, and other rounder tasting blends. I could barely get a thing out of the smoke aside from...dull smoke.
With a clean mouth and a refreshed pipe, I can taste a burst of tangy citrus orientals, musky turkish, hints of sweet VA and a tiny bit of Latakia. All billowing out through out the bowl. Fairly complex yet not overwhelming in flavor. As I had hoped and suspected, I classify this as "Durbar Light". Less power, harshness. Still plenty of taste. As others have noted, this is NOT light as far as nicotine goes. Expect a VERY high nicotine kick. Nightcap usually gives me little trouble, this made my head spin.
Similar to Pease Samarra, though a bit fuller in a cigar like flavor. While I enjoy it, I believe there are other tobaccos in this category (Orient Express, Baalbek, Samarra) that are a bit more interesting. Though I believe the strength in this tobacco, like many of the Dunhill line I've been recently working on, comes in the pedigree and reliability. And at the price (if you hunt around), you likely won't be disappointed by a bowl of EMP if you like Oriental blends on the lighter flavor side.

After some years I tried a tin of this tobacco. I is a nice tobacco, but no better. If I have to smoke a latakia-based mixture in the morning I absolutely prefer Paul Olsen's "King George VI".

I do not have the time to describe the attributes of this tobacco in detail as others do. However, as I do wish to contribute some feedback, I will simply rate this tobacco on a scale of 1 ?10, including tenths.
I no longer smoke English blends but my notes indicate I found EMP lacking 'oomph." - I like more body. I rate this tobacco 7.5 out of 10.

I think others have said this but I'll say it again. To me this seems like a milder version of Dunhill 965; milder in taste but not lacking much nicotine if any. Apparently the early-morning smoker sitll wants their full dose of nicotine to get them started for the day. Then again maybe I'm just too sensitive to nicotine or something.
Even though this is supposedly mild I found it stronger in flavor than the last mild english I smoked (Valle Crucis) so I'm rating it medium on that. Valle Crucis was a bit too mild for me and EMP is about as mild as I think I can stand in an English blend without getting annoyed at the lack of latakia flavor.
I detect a slight soapy flavor so I'm assuming that there is a little bit of casing involved in this somewhere.
Overall I think this is quality stuff but to me it's nothing special. Maybe if I were more of an "Early morning" or all-day smoker, and i smoked more 965, I'd see more point to this stuff, but to me theres no special appeal. If you find yourself craving a milder 956 at times though then give this a try.
