G. L. Pease Quiet Nights

(3.52)
Rich, deep, contemplative... Ripe red Virginias, fine Orientals, smokey Cyprus latakia, and a pinch of acadian perique are pressed and matured in cakes before being sliced. The sophisticated flavors and exotic aroma provide a wonderful backdrop for quiet moments of reflection, a good book, and if you are so inclined, perhaps a wee dram.
Notes: This is the second entry in the Old London Series. It is fuller and somewhat more latakia forward than Chelsea Morning, with a higher percentage of Orientals, and less perique. It's rich, complex, leathery and smoky, with a naturally sweet structure from the darker Virginias, and a balanced Oriental spice. It compares in strength and fullness with blends like Samarra and Blackpoint, but the pressing makes it deeper, darker, and brings new dimensions to the flavors and aromas. It's really wonderful. An ideal addition to the series, perfectly complimenting a relaxing evening. Quiet Nights was introduced in May, 2010.

A very wet presentation of dark flakes packs a pleasantand balanced smoke. “Sweet Latakia” may be the simplest description, but that would omit the honorable mention of peppery notes.

Leaves a fine white ash and burns cool, which is surprising given the wet dottle left behind. Needs relight consistent with the presentation.

This is an instant classic.

I bought this one bc I heard some people talking about it on brothers of briar. How good it was and that it might disappear with the new FDA regs. I like some of the others I tried from Pease and have come expect great things from his blends. I went for the big tin, so my review is on that size.

It comes in the tin in four oak tag can liners like from smaller cans. The flakes are thick, but fall apart from handling easily. Very dark in color, and a bit shiny. Smells heavily of Latakia. It rubs out easily, and is a bit on the dry side. Takes a good char to get it lit well. Smokes slowly, so it's nice and cool with no bite. Very tasty, smokey and sweet with a bit of perique spice. It is rich and deep with a sweetness more like a good dark chocolate in profile. It may not be a good one for beginners. Has a good strength to it.

This is a good blend all around. It would be good with scotch or a dark beer. It reminds me of Lagonda, and nightcap. If you like those, this may be suited to you. It is better than nightcap though.

Cool smoking and smooth, with that little taste of Perique spice skulking around. Rubbed out and rested, this becomes a favorite Latakia blend. I think this one's the champion of the Old London Series.

Wow this blend has rekindled my love for latakia. I was expecting a typical English blend but was pleasantly surprised to find this to be a latikia lovers dream. Very smokey with hints of leather and woods. GL pease hit the mark on this one. I will say its best to open this one and let it sit for a couple of weeks. It is definitely better. Im interested to try some more of his English blends to see how they stack up against this one.

Very, very good...wish this was offered in bulk...Tins are a bit pricey for those of us who are retired and on a fixed income...Would make daily rotation otherwise...Will certainly when I can afford.

This blend is a star for me. So flavorful and delicious.

I find that rubbing this out and drying it well contributes greatly to a satisfying smoke. You will be rewarded with a bowl that is full of flavors I have yet to experience while smoking my pipe.

Vinegary and sweetish tin note. The pressed flakes are stiff, but break easily, packing great into the bowl and burning with perfection. This is a nice full smoky mixture with a leather/wood/herbs. There’s a heavenly amount of sweetness involved as well. This is a great balanced tobacco. There is an unfortunate perfume taste for my liking but still it works in this mix and has me thinking maybe I like the perfume taste somewhat. This is a very pleasant and high-quality Tobacco with the perfect nicotine hit for those that like their nicotine.

I really, really like this one. In a weird way it’s like smoking a tobacco version of incense. I know that doesn’t sound enjoyable, but it is. I get a rich flavor with lots of smoke. I don’t smoke this one too much because of how strong of a smoke it is, but I pull it out on a cool night when I’m feeling like I’m in a quiet, thoughtful, or nostalgic mood.

Make sure you smoke this in a pipe you have saved for English blends because it will definitely leave some ghosting if you try to smoke something light afterwards.

I’ve heard it’s similar to Penzance but I’ve never had the opportunity to try any so I can’t speak for that.

I finished the last of my Penzance and I couldn't get more so I decided to give this blend a try as others suggested it was similar. I personally did not find this to be a Penzance replacement. Aside from the heavy Latakia difference, the taste in the Orientals also differ from Penzance, and the Virginias are more prominent in Quiet Nights.

That being said, this tobacco is amazing. Definitely a Latakia lover's dream and I find the Orientals to be deliciously leathery and oily. The Virginias also make punctuated and loud announcements throughout the bowl. When they do you can taste high quality full flavored Virginias. Aroma is also very pleasant. This will definitely find its way into my English rotation often.

Based on a tin dated Dec of 2020.

The tin note is kind of fruity and leathery and quite musty. Reminds me of leather boots and a nice old bookstore or something. Hints of tarryness and some smoke.

This comes in a beautiful broken flake, and it's pretty dark brown with some black flecks here and there. It's gorgeous to look at. Feels nice when I break it apart. It's pretty moist but definitely smokable.

For me, this is more fruity and tart than it is smokey. The smoke and incense is present throughout the smoke but it never takes over the experience. I'm never overpowered by any one note, or sensation, and the smoke is wonderfully engaging to the senses. I really enjoy the aroma coming off the pipe.

This lights pretty well and burns pretty well down the bowl. I would say the strength is medium, and the taste is medium as well. The nicotine is mild to medium. I'm surprised at how easy-going and luxurious this smoke is, and I think I could smoke it all day. I was expecting more Latakia presence but I'm certainly not disappointed. I would recommend it to people that like this kind of mixture. I would even recommend it to Virginia smokers. Four stars from me. Highly recommended for it's overall loveliness.
