G. L. Pease Quiet Nights
(3.52)
Rich, deep, contemplative... Ripe red Virginias, fine Orientals, smokey Cyprus latakia, and a pinch of acadian perique are pressed and matured in cakes before being sliced. The sophisticated flavors and exotic aroma provide a wonderful backdrop for quiet moments of reflection, a good book, and if you are so inclined, perhaps a wee dram.
Notes: This is the second entry in the Old London Series. It is fuller and somewhat more latakia forward than Chelsea Morning, with a higher percentage of Orientals, and less perique. It's rich, complex, leathery and smoky, with a naturally sweet structure from the darker Virginias, and a balanced Oriental spice. It compares in strength and fullness with blends like Samarra and Blackpoint, but the pressing makes it deeper, darker, and brings new dimensions to the flavors and aromas. It's really wonderful. An ideal addition to the series, perfectly complimenting a relaxing evening.
Quiet Nights was introduced in May, 2010.

Solid very latakia forward English tobacco. Comes chunky. A bit moist. 15 mins of drying time helps a lot. Lots of relights. Nice smooth flavor. The first few puffs are complex, but then the Latakia kicks in, shorts out my tongue. and that's all I taste til the end of the bowl. There was a "perfumey quality" to the Latakia that I didn't like. Considering the reviews of QN as a medium English, I was hoping the experience would be like Squadron Leader with a little more kick, but it ended up as more of a lat-bomb.

I really, really like this one. In a weird way it’s like smoking a tobacco version of incense. I know that doesn’t sound enjoyable, but it is. I get a rich flavor with lots of smoke. I don’t smoke this one too much because of how strong of a smoke it is, but I pull it out on a cool night when I’m feeling like I’m in a quiet, thoughtful, or nostalgic mood.
Make sure you smoke this in a pipe you have saved for English blends because it will definitely leave some ghosting if you try to smoke something light afterwards.
I’ve heard it’s similar to Penzance but I’ve never had the opportunity to try any so I can’t speak for that.

Bag note is Latakia forward with some sweetness and quite musky. The flakes are quite dry in my sample bag no need to rub them out the pack very well. The first 1/3 of the bowl is straight woodsy Latakia very Smokey with just a touch of sweetness from the Virginia's. The perique give just a bit of tingle to the tongue. Becomes a bit more smooth at the 1/2 way point. Burnes faster than I expected. The smokey Latakia is the main player as far as the flavors go but the Virginias keep it balanced. It seems like the perique and the Turkish are condiments and are only slightly noticed if your cadence is quite slow. A nice winter blend for back porch smoking. The room note is quite strong. Not quite an all day smoke but a nice after dinner blend. 3.5 stars out of 4

I finished the last of my Penzance and I couldn't get more so I decided to give this blend a try as others suggested it was similar. I personally did not find this to be a Penzance replacement. Aside from the heavy Latakia difference, the taste in the Orientals also differ from Penzance, and the Virginias are more prominent in Quiet Nights.
That being said, this tobacco is amazing. Definitely a Latakia lover's dream and I find the Orientals to be deliciously leathery and oily. The Virginias also make punctuated and loud announcements throughout the bowl. When they do you can taste high quality full flavored Virginias. Aroma is also very pleasant. This will definitely find its way into my English rotation often.

Preparation & Burn: 7/10 Not the easiest to pack and light. But I've seen much worse. After packing and doing a charring light, waiting a 5 or 10 minutes before smoking will do the trick for me.
Taste: 17/20 Not quite as good as Plum Pudding, but it's still excellent.
Mildness: 7/10 My idea of a good smoke is a relaxing, low nicotine session. Therefore, the milder the better. Not much nicotine here.
Total: 31/40

Based on a tin dated Dec of 2020.
The tin note is kind of fruity and leathery and quite musty. Reminds me of leather boots and a nice old bookstore or something. Hints of tarryness and some smoke.
This comes in a beautiful broken flake, and it's pretty dark brown with some black flecks here and there. It's gorgeous to look at. Feels nice when I break it apart. It's pretty moist but definitely smokable.
For me, this is more fruity and tart than it is smokey. The smoke and incense is present throughout the smoke but it never takes over the experience. I'm never overpowered by any one note, or sensation, and the smoke is wonderfully engaging to the senses. I really enjoy the aroma coming off the pipe.
This lights pretty well and burns pretty well down the bowl. I would say the strength is medium, and the taste is medium as well. The nicotine is mild to medium. I'm surprised at how easy-going and luxurious this smoke is, and I think I could smoke it all day. I was expecting more Latakia presence but I'm certainly not disappointed. I would recommend it to people that like this kind of mixture. I would even recommend it to Virginia smokers. Four stars from me. Highly recommended for it's overall loveliness.

Another fine blend from Pease. Latakia and Orientals are in the lead from the start, giving this a smokey, leathery, and floral taste. Virginia adds some sweetness. A little spicy Perique is there further in the background, and seemed more noticeable in the latter half of the bowl.
Can require more relights than average so give it a bit of air/dry time. No bite, harshness, and didn't get too hot.
While I prefer Meridian just a tad more, this is still 4 stars for me. Highly recommended for just about any piper, especially English lovers.

I don’t have anything additional to say about this blend that others haven’t already said regarding its quality and component tobaccos. What I can add is that if you do not love floral, herbal, incense-like orientals this won’t be your favorite as it isn’t mine. I also disagree that it is particularly savory, at least what I think of as savory. It isn’t bad at all, but doesn’t touch My Mixture 965 as an ideal all day blend with Latakia.

I had a sample of this tobacco the other day, but I found it quite flat. My favourite tobacco blends will evolve as you progress through every quarter of your bowl. My main issue with Quiet Night is that it remains the same from the beginning to the end. That does not necessarily mean it is a bad blend, but I am not digging it. On the positive side, I'd say it is rather light on Latakia, but lacks the burley profile I usually like in these sort of blends. Quiet Nights is not a Balkan forward blend. It seems to focus more on the Oriental leaf, but it is not a mixture I'd normally buy. I will give it 3 stars this time because I am a bit biased by my own likes and personal preferences.

Smooth, sweet, spicy...smoky and some tang.
Excellent blend that isn’t going to have to fight to stay in a very regular rotation. Certainly one of my favorites. Plenty of reviews to give you more details - but this is hands down fantastic. Need more stars.
