Tabac Manil La Brumeuse

(3.33)
Semois leaf is a rich, pure leaf burley tobacco that is grown and processed in Belgium in the Ardennes Valley (Val Ardennais) - think Battle of the Bulge. Highly reminiscent of smoking a cigar, but in a pipe, it is a fascinating tobacco that has been highly regarded in Europe for well over 100 years. From start to finish, the flavor becomes more and more pronounced, giving a reliable and enjoyable smoke. This is the thick-cut version (gross coupe).
Notes: According to the catalog from tabac-semois.com: Le Petit Robin is Coupe Fine/ Thin cut. Réserve du Patron is Coupe Moyenne/ Middle Cut. La Brumeuse is Grosse Coupe/ Big Cut.

La Brumeuse reminds me of a good mild cigar mixed with a straight-forward burley tobacco. It is unobtrusive and slightly earthy. There is a slight funk that is hard to describe; however, it is enjoyable. I could smoke Semois on a regular basis.

Very odd and unique. Pure Semois deserves a place in the cellar for fans of a dry earthy smoke. It is always a pleasure to smoke an unadulterated tobacco. The aroma is very faint and vaguely cigar-like with earth and a slight sweetness. The cigar comparison works for me but definitely of the mild Dominican variety not a full bodied Nicaraguan. The overall flavor is toasty and there are notes of chocolate and burley nuttiness. Strength is medium to full with a bit of a kick.

It's the same review that I've made some months ago in this site (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/3787/tabac-manil-la-brumeuse). So I copy here.

This is the first Semois tobacco I have tried. At first I liked it but not so much. A lot of people say that tobacco is one of the best of his kind (e.a Semois). Then I've tried others. Now I can tell it's not the better I've tasted. I can't say it's the worst (I haven't taste all) but for the moment it's that I liked the less. I don't take pleasure smoking it because of its embittering. It's not overwhelming but not nice so far. Obviously, this is my opinion.

I recommand it because it's considered as one of the better Semois tobacco but if you can't (or don't want to) try a lot of Semois, there is so much tobacco which are better (to me)...

I generally agree with Pkloop's review, although the taste does remind me of cigars with a Cameroon leaf wrapper. And it does burn up fast; at least 3x faster -- need a quick pipe break? This will do it. I also agree I don't see this ghosting a pipe. No rebuy but I'm glad I tried it.

A baccy in its own category, for sure! A bit like the French Scaferlati (not so flat) and the Toscano cigar crumbled into a pipe (not so strong). The first time I smoked it I was rather disappointed: burnt quickly, was too flat and stingy. Then I realised that it was my fault and not the tobacco itself. I would call it a baccy for meditation: you need the right mood, a very slow pace, a pipe with a large bowl. In few words it’s not a tobacco to be "light smoked", concentration it’s a must. As other Briar-Brothers correctly pinpointed, it needs a tight pressure into the pipe and must be smoked as dry as it arrives. The dryer the better. The first third is the less interesting but enjoyable at the same time. It reminds me of hay and pasture, a touch of light floral from now and then. From that point on, it starts to spring all its components: a kind of bread or better, those hardtack I was used to eat during my Military Service. Really tasty! And a whiff of butter too. I read some chaps here comparing it to wines. I don’t fully agree. It’s in the league like the black Guinness beer: a world apart. Frankly speaking, it’s not in my daily rotation, my job doesn’t allow me to have the right amount of time available to fully enjoy it. But during hot summer evening (today’s steaming hot!?) it’s a precious companion. In my humble opinion, it doesn’t change too much if cellared. A big 3 stars and half.

I told my wife I was heading out to get a pack of smoke and I never came back… Thanks Tabac Manil! ( love to refer to this as a pack instead of a tin or pouch ! )

A few new things to add 1. It Makes my mouth water like crazy when smoking it. 2. Smoke it in a restricted drawing pipe 3. Extremely light and easy but long draws if u want to get what this offers best 5. Cigarette like more than cigar like 6:strange flavors sometimes of popcorn, sometimes flowery oriental , some Turkish notes, vegetal notes. So as bad as I want to say it is non complex , it kinda is in the weirdest way that I can not explain ! Enjoy!

Gauloises in a pipe. Delicious for when nothing else will suffice. It does burn a little quickly but stuff it really hard for that quintessential French Brunes flavor

The bag note was quite unique. There’s a tangy sweet hay aroma I associate with Virginias, but also a woody cereal grain aroma like burley along with a tea leaf aroma and a slight cigar must. If you like the smell of tobacco you’ll love this. Curly ribbons that were dry as any tobacco I have ever tried to smoke. Not so dry they crumbled into dust but dry enough to be crispy. Crammed it tight into a small clay pipe.

Immediately on the charing light you’re socked with a heavy flavor and mouth feel like a cigar. Now no cigar I’ve ever smoked tasted like this. Musty mineral mushroom flavor. There’s something else very familiar like a déjà vu but I can’t seem to place my finger on it at first. Whatever it is I don’t care for it but I’m so intrigued that I can’t stop tasting it. Wood ear, or hen of the woods mushrooms. It tastes like mushrooms. This is the pipe weed Gandalf smoked. Tastes like the earth. A musty, mushroom, mineral, wet dead trees in the woods after a rainfall flavor. It’s all so… fascinating. Rather reminds me of how my wet socks smell after hiking. So… if you like that? For me not so much.

Not something I would smoke a lot of but I’m very thankful I was able to try it. I have a few more of tobaccos from Vincent Manil that I look forward to trying. The nicotine is there and it’s strong for me. Smoked very well. It’s dry, pack it tight and smoke it slow. The aroma in the room is strong .

For me, I hated this. However, I can see when some people will fall in love with it. It’s a strong and unique flavor. The déjà vu I spoke of earlier was my socks. Like when I was a kid after playing hockey we would dry out equipment out and forget your socks, not your hockey socks but normal socks, unless you were a savage and skated barefoot, that you forgot in your bag. They would dry out and have that smell. Nostalgic yes! But for pipe tobacco I’ll pass.
