Sutliff Tobacco Company Mild Burley J4

(2.50)
A natural blend of 100% Burleys long cut, great taste and aroma. A soft, no-bite experience for the traditional Burley smoker.
Notes: Sutliff Burley (J4) is the very definition of an all-day blend. It's a mellow ribbon-cut Burley with a smooth casing to counteract the typical Burley harshness and a pleasantly soft top note of vanilla. You'll get real tobacco flavor that's enhanced, not masked by the flavoring. The aftertaste is gentle, and the room note is enjoyable without being heavy. This compares nicely with OTC Burley blends but costs a lot less. If you want a go-to blend that you can enjoy anytime, you've found it.

I too received this neat little blend as a gift from an etailer and decided to give it a run.

J4 would be what I consider a tolerable aromatic [I've move further into VA's and English blends]. The casing is light and the aroma is pleasing to the Mrs. I like the smell of the smoke when I draw through my nostrils. However, for me it is bland and has that bitter aftertaste I associate with Burleys (which reminds me why I've decided to get away from aromatics)

I would recommend this to aromatic smokers who want a more cleaner tasting tobacco. It's good enough that I will not be discarding it but I would not deliberately go out and purchase any for myself.

Okay, as others have suggested, I let the pouch air out for a good 24 hours and must say that the bitterness has somewhat dissipated. The tobacco is much more sweeter and smells somewhat caramel-like. Because the bitterness has gone, I'm upping this to three stars instead of two!

Mild Burley… Not knowing what to expect from a blend called “mild burly” and being a sucker for most burleys blends, I figured why-not, and ordered some. Receiving my order, I was anxious to give it a try, so I fired up a bowl. The first thought to enter my mind was “this stuff is substantial” no hidden nuances here, just burley, I like it. A welcome replacement for the troublesome "Cube". I must admit, I'm really not sure where the line is drawn between an aromatic or a non aromatic, so I will call it neither. It seems to have a very faint vanilla aroma of some sort, which for me seems natural, so call it what you like. I believe many will love this stuff, straight up or as a dynamite blender. Overall, easy to light, stays lit and most important to me, it tolerates my outdoor puffing rate, without bite or harshness. For it's genre, 3 stars. My personal rating 2/5

I saw this one on a list of beginner pipe tobaccos that everyone should try. I figured, “what the hell, why not?” Taste-wise this has a mild almond/vanilla flavor and aroma, one that is pleasantly old-fashioned (it smelt like what my long deceased uncle used to smoke, in fact). The scent is pleasant and, again, nutty. My non-smoker wife even liked it. It burned very well, with no need for a relight after the post-leveling light with which I start out.

Jar note of bitter dry dark chocolate, sweet cream, and mild tart fruit. Tobacco is very moist, brown and dark brown, and mostly a medium ribbon with a bit of small course cut mixed in. Drying out is needed. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is very mild, with notes of vanilla, flavoring wains near the middle. Taste is mild to medium and mostly consistent, with notes of bitter wood, brown sugar, bread, mild cocoa, dry earth, a mildly sweet nut background note, and a peppery retro. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is good.

I too got a packet of this in a recent etail order. My first impressions were, "Oh No, another PG and chemical soaked burley!" I let it air out on a paper plate overnight and gave it a fair start in the morning on a clean palate.

Upon examination it seems to be high quality burley with little or no lumber floating around in it. Pouch odor is the familiar chemical toppings with a background note of tobacco. Upon lighting, the tobacco taste is very masked by the addition of a vanilla-like topping. It lights easy, stays lit pretty well and doesn't seem to gurgle or gunk up your pipe. It did leave a heavy, oily residue on the rim that I don't experence with other tobaccos I enjoy. Conclusions, It was free! Really, it was not BAD! It just was not what I would call GOOD. Smokable, more so than Capt.Black or Borkum Riff, but still too artificial tasting for me.

UPDATE I am beginning to suspect Altadis put some glycol in this baccy so I'm lowering my rating of it down to only "somewhat recommneded".

I received a pouch of this stuff as a free sample along with an order from an e-shop. It is surprisingly mild for a burley and it smokes cool & dry. It has quality leaf in it and it doesn't bite. It is similar to some of the "house blends" from most local tobacco shops. Recommended.
