Sutliff Tobacco Company Mild Burley J4

(2.50)
A natural blend of 100% Burleys long cut, great taste and aroma. A soft, no-bite experience for the traditional Burley smoker.
Notes: Sutliff Burley (J4) is the very definition of an all-day blend. It's a mellow ribbon-cut Burley with a smooth casing to counteract the typical Burley harshness and a pleasantly soft top note of vanilla. You'll get real tobacco flavor that's enhanced, not masked by the flavoring. The aftertaste is gentle, and the room note is enjoyable without being heavy. This compares nicely with OTC Burley blends but costs a lot less. If you want a go-to blend that you can enjoy anytime, you've found it.

A freebie with an online tobacco order. I need to learn to Just Say No!

Ok, this wasn't bad but it qualifies as a straight and natural burley like video game addicts qualify as athletes. This is an aromatic - a light aromatic to be sure, but an aromatic all the same. And not the best representation of that genre, either. But not bad. Comes wet in the pouch and needs some drying time... which is an exercise in pointlessness anyway.

Ribbon cut with a color all over the map, the pouch nose is decidedly vanilla. As for the flavor, the vanilla is light but somehow the natural burley taste doesn't come through much, and when it does, it has an oddly sweet/sour taste. Overall, I found this extremely bland and not much good for any occasion. There are much better burleys out there, including most OTC's, and much better aromatics as well. This sort of skirts both styles without making a mark in either. Try it only if it's free, and even then give some thought to whether you want to smoke hot air with a light vanilla taste. Not bad, but hardly worth the effort.

Like others note, I received this as a gift with an online order. I stuck it away and forgot about it until a few days ago. Was surprised when I opened it, after ten years it was still moist. Since it is ten years old this is the Altidas version of J4. I understand the Sutliff version is no different. Since it has been in a baggie for ten years does make me wonder what was done to it since it is still so moist. It did still have a mild woody and vanilla smell somewhat similar to a drug store tobacco. Easy to pack and light, it burned well. Mild taste of cocoa and vanilla is gone early in the bowl, then you are left with the typical burley flavor which is not a bad thing to be left with. Not complicated and not much different than the typical over the counter smoke but better quality. If you like the typical over the counter smokes you will love this. It can easily be an all day smoke. You will also smell like someone's grandpa but in a good way.

Light vanilla taste with decent chocolate notes, my sample was freebie that I received included in an order about 5 years ago, I left it on my shed and forgot about it and guess what is still wet, proceed it to pack it on a cherrywood Ropp and here are my findings, smokes okay decent aromatic not great it bites like hell if you push it, almost no nicotine to speak of, so here is the thing in my opinion this is not worth the time when you can still get Prince Albert or Carter Hall.

Jar note of bitter dry dark chocolate, sweet cream, and mild tart fruit. Tobacco is very moist, brown and dark brown, and mostly a medium ribbon with a bit of small course cut mixed in. Drying out is needed. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is very mild, with notes of vanilla, flavoring wains near the middle. Taste is mild to medium and mostly consistent, with notes of bitter wood, brown sugar, bread, mild cocoa, dry earth, a mildly sweet nut background note, and a peppery retro. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is good.

I too got a packet of this in a recent etail order. My first impressions were, "Oh No, another PG and chemical soaked burley!" I let it air out on a paper plate overnight and gave it a fair start in the morning on a clean palate.

Upon examination it seems to be high quality burley with little or no lumber floating around in it. Pouch odor is the familiar chemical toppings with a background note of tobacco. Upon lighting, the tobacco taste is very masked by the addition of a vanilla-like topping. It lights easy, stays lit pretty well and doesn't seem to gurgle or gunk up your pipe. It did leave a heavy, oily residue on the rim that I don't experence with other tobaccos I enjoy. Conclusions, It was free! Really, it was not BAD! It just was not what I would call GOOD. Smokable, more so than Capt.Black or Borkum Riff, but still too artificial tasting for me.

UPDATE I am beginning to suspect Altadis put some glycol in this baccy so I'm lowering my rating of it down to only "somewhat recommneded".

I received a pouch of this stuff as a free sample along with an order from an e-shop. It is surprisingly mild for a burley and it smokes cool & dry. It has quality leaf in it and it doesn't bite. It is similar to some of the "house blends" from most local tobacco shops. Recommended.
