Being a true Burley lover and a purist at heart, in this day and age, is not a simple endeavor. Yes, there are hundreds of blends that claim the importance of the Burley role in their tobacco. Yet, the question is: what do you look for in a Burley blend? For me, it begins with (a least) a promise of pure taste with no added flavors/topping, very minimal casing if any, as I cannot radically tolerate any "aromatic" shadow in my tobacco. I also need a promise of satisfying "strength" (read, vitamin-N), for otherwise, why bother? No wimpy smoke for me. I want a nice & natural presence of sweetness into the blend, for the world has already too much bitterness. I desire intensity of flavor, something that fills the palate with focus, while pleasant, agreeable and harmonious in every respect a blend should be. I need the blend to be Burley forward of course, but showing respect and forbearance to the other components. At last, I want a Burley blend that after I smoke it, I fell elated, satisfied and why not, wiser.
I only smoke Burley blends. I have tried everything out there, from all countries and blenders, for years, looking for the "Eden of Burley" blend. It took a lot of work, patience, disappointment, and obstinacy, but I found a secret treasure years ago, put together by the late genius blender Bob Runowski - and C&D Burley Flake #1 is its name.
For the longest time, this is the only blend I smoke every day. Yes, I often try other blends, and I do have alternatives here with me for some variety. However, 90% (or more) of the time I smoke, I only and exclusively smoke C&D Burley Flake #1. Yes, I am a purist.
Need I say more of how I feel about this blend?

In my opinion, the real difference between flakes 1-3 is the amount of Kentucky. #1 has the Kentucky, but it plays in the background. While with #3, it’s the main player. I’m sure the other proportions vary also, but that tang from the ky is what I notice most. As far as nicotine goes. I think #1 might pack the biggest punch. Even though it’s not the most full flavored of the bunch. I think the fact that it burns so slow contributes to the strength.

First thing I like about the blend is its cut! Very thick, flake-ish chunks, almost like a roughly broken crumble cake or alike. The tin note is hearty, with peppery and fruity notes from the Perique and the Burley dominating with earth, wood and dough aroma.
For me it works best to rub those flake-ish chunks out a bit and pack it as a ready-rubbed-alike. Tastewise this is not too different from the BF#3, albeit the Perique is a bit more tamed in this one. The Perique is present in every puff, and its distinc peppery-sharpness and plum-y, fig-y fruit notes enrich the blend excellently. The Burleys set the foundation with its earthy, dough-like, sharp and tart aroma. Rich, full-bodied smoke. There's more than just a pinch of Perique to my perception, I'd estimate 10-15% of Perique! In the background there's a slight smokiness lurking.
Compared to #3 this is more mild in nicotine (yet still a strong(er) blend!), more mild in the Perique and more refined in its flavors. Whilst #3 ist full-bodied, stout and heavy smoke, #1 has more of a All-Day-tendency for the Burley-Aficionado. Can't beat my favorites - #2 and #4, but still... a 4-star worthy blend!

This is a full-bodied broken burley flake similar to Old Joe Krantz in many fronts. It packs quite a punch both in flavour and nicotine, so be advised. Also, it can develop harsh spots that could be misconstrued as tongue-bite, and the room-note can be overwhelming to those around you. I think this tobacco will require a process of acclimation and adjusting if you are to fully appreciate this blend for what it is. That is to say you might be in for a little bit of a shock if you are not used to burley blends. The flavour is deep, rich and dark, and can be reminiscent of cigar leaf at times. The perique leaf is quite apparent adding sort of a peppery note to it. I think this could be a great evening/after tea blend that will perform best in smaller size bowls. It is worth trying, but does not quite reach 4 stars for me.

I finished my first tin of this blend. Broken flakes only took an effortless quarter twist to break up into perfect cut for my taste. No moisture, burns cool, stays lit and produces lots of smoke. I found the blend to be full in flavor especially with the perique. This blend comes alive after a few sips of black coffee, in fact, I can't really taste it too well without coffee on the tongue. Nicotine content seemed high and left a lumpy feeling on the throat.

Received a tin of this last week. The flakes are neatly presented and had a wonderful deep and dark aroma akin to Solani Aged Burley flakes. The perique was detectable however not overpowering.
Upon initial light the twang of the Perique just shot straight up and I was delighted with the taste this tobacco had given the faint perique aroma in the tin note. I quickly discovered that this tobacco is not for the faint hearted. It had a very full body with loads of Vitamin N. Sip and you shall survive..
Mid bowl, the blend maintained a very dark mysterious taste profile. It did not go here not there, did not take you on a perilous journey. It is a long straight road, yet delightful with every sip.
Beware, do try this blend in a small bowled pipe beforehand or you might find that you have bargained more than you have asked for.

Although some of us described this blend's cut as a flake, I agree with Jacinto Cupboard. The cut is a tin full of 1/4 inch wide by two inch strips and I've never encountered this cut before. They don't so much rub out as break into smaller sections, and that's okay. The tin aroma is fairly strong and burley nutty with an undercurrent of red Virginia and perique - yes, I can detect the small amount of perique. The tin aroma is not quite as strong as BF #4, the only other BF blend I have smoked at this time, and lacks the "dirty socks" bouquet of #4 that I thought was wonderful. The smoking aroma is what you might expect from a burley/Virginia mixture; strong, nutty and grassy at the same time. The perique adds just a little edge and I liked that. All in all, not my idea of an everyday smoke and, if I were to score it on that basis, I would give this blend a two star rating. However, I began to use it as my burley component in blending and it worked-out fabulously. Based on this I am rating BF #1 as a three star blend.

first i must say i like Cornell & Diehl´s blends. this blend though was a bit of a disapointment, when i opened the tin it smelled ok but after a week or so it started to smell like old swetty socks... The taste of the first bowl was ok, nothing exiting or special, and the deeper into the tin i went the tobacco taste was worse and worse. maybe i got a bad tin or maybe my tastebuds was spoiled by my last burley tin (Solani- Aged burley flake, a really good blend), but due to my ecperience with this tin i don´t think i´ll buy another one and i can´t really give it more than 2 stars.

A mellow, solid Burley blend. The Perique is hardly noticeable, but what I do taste is a good amount of Kentucky (or something very similar) which makes this tobacco quite similar to GLPease Cumberland.
I have to take 1 star from it since I find this mixture a bit astringent towards the end of the bowl.

Smoking a 2017 tin that had a nice "whoosh" when it was opened.
The tin note was quite earthy. The moisture content for me required just a little drying to get to burn well. The cut is broken flake C&D style which makes for easy packing as is or broken up even more depending on bowl shape and preference.
Once lit, it provides a very consistent smoke through the bowl. The burley/ky lead the way in flavor, but there is a nice sweet top note from the red VA which I was not expecting. It burns well through the bowl producing some moisture and requiring a few pipe cleaners. With 5 years of age, it is quite an enjoyable smoke and I'm glad I have a few more tins put back in the cellar.
