This blend is one of the best strong blends I have ever tried. Usually I stay away from this kind of strong blends which oftenly causes hick-ups to me. This time I am not regretful.

The mellow Burley and Virginia from this tin offered me all the nicotine and true man's real tobacco taste. These needs are guaranteed upon on first lighting this blend. It smokes cool and if you pay attention on your puffing rhythm you will enjoy all the strengthness till the bottom of your bowl. The Perique addition makes it even more dangerous which is enjoyable before the first half of the bowl and all the combination keeps you awake t?ll the end. No sweetness here. All you get ?s a punch of nicotine and full cigar like tobacco flavor.

Recommended for mature pipe smokers. I personally am smoking this stuff in a medium sized bowl, after dinner accompanied with a favorite bourbon or scotch. Then sleep as a baby.

I like this tobacco! after trying Solani Aged Burley Flake, I ws embolded by the notion that not all Burleys had to be flat and dull. This is, of course, a blend with va and perique, but the burley component is not small here. It is very burley forward in taste.

The va offers some nuance to the burley and the perique gives a nice spice ovrall. The vitamin N is sufficient here to satisfy me and the overall body and depth of the smoke very nice indeed. Can't really recall any real downsides to this one other than to watch your cadence. It can become flat and bitter if puffed too fast.

A good solid servicable tobacco suitable to all day smoking if desired. Definately for the hardier tobacco fan.

This flake has more Virginia, red Virginia than the other two. Thus it is a trifle sweeter than #2 or # 3. Still plenty of nutty burley.

It is stronger than #2 (my favorite of the series) and close to # 3 in body (which has more Kentucky to my senses). Full on the palate for sure. Smooth, no bite.

Slight comparison can be made to Pease's Kentucky Burley/Virginia blend (Cumberland which I like better than this), but this is a flake. The flakes do break apart easily and a thick ribbon is left. Burns well.

Recommended to burley lovers.

I feel privileged to be the first to review this flake. I ordered a 5-pack sample of some Cornell & Diehl blends a week or so ago, and they offered to throw in samples of Burley Flakes #1, #2, and #3. I have worked my way through a pipeful or two of each of them, and I am very pleased.

Flake #1 is a loose, slightly sloppy flake that falls apart when it is handled. I smoked it in a tall, small-bowled Stanwell that I use for flake tobacco. I folded the flakes sideways, then once endways, then gave them a twist and stuffed them into the pipe. I do not rub these out. The result is a rich, creamy burley with just a hint of pepper from the perique. It smoked slowly and coolly. I found the moisture level of the flakes perfect for smoking; they stayed lit and smouldered beautifully to the end. There is a healthy dose of nicotine that should have you relaxed by the time you get to the bottom of the bowl. Highly recommended.

Wow! This blend was made for me! I think I would name this “burley flake #3 -Light”

Notes: 1. Hamster cage smell in the tin (not pleasant) 2.Good nicotine level (much less than #3) 3.Pure tobacco ( no top flavoring whatsoever) 4. Side stream is wonderful and sharp 5.lingering aftertaste 6.Satisfying

This burns a little bit on the hot side the day you open it and decide to smoke a bowl immediateley. Do not let that get you down. Give it even just one day in a jar and then let it sit for 10 minutes before lighting: . I thought it’s the red Virginia that must be burning me. Nope. Just that fresh moisture..... Burleys don’t bite me...... But truly it is a wonderful fine smoke and it makes ya feel like a real man.

I am taking up sword fighting, crab fishing on the bearing sea, and I’m also out to kill a grizzly with my bare hands now.

Good job and thanks C&D 4 well deserved stars!!

Just finished a full tin. Strong on the burley, can pick up the red virginia at tins but they come and and go. Perique is light. Uneventful retrohale. Once lit never required a relight. Burns easy to a fine ash. Available in bulk which is nice if you find this blend to your liking. Found it a bit harsh at times however and many burleys out there that I would rather reach for. Nothing I would cellar. If you enjoy burley I would highly recommend a try none the less.

C&D- Burley flake #1

I recently purchased this on a whim, after listening to a podcast discussing the burley flake series, after a little research about the various differences in 1 through 5, I decided one would be right up my alley.

My tin is dated 27Aug19, it was slightly moist upon opening, and as with all C&D blends this is more broken flake than flake, something I’ve grown accustomed to at this point. This rubs out easily and packs easily also.

Upon first opening the smell is plum, woodsy earth and sweet freshly clipped grass. I have to admit I should have let this dry a few more minutes but I was ready to light this up.

Upon the first few puffs I got some small peppery note but mostly woodsy tree nut flavors with a little grassiness. This blend tastes great, I’m enjoying the mix of flavors, it’s staying lit well enough and the nic hit is just past medium. The Perique can be a little rough around the edges at times.

Im happy that I tried this blend, happier that I ordered another tin as this will be a nice morning coffee accompanying blend, with age the blend will smooth out and provided a more well balance smoke.

This blend reminds me of C&D’s five o clock shadow, probably more so due to similar components but if you like this try that one also.

Presentation is typical C&D flakes - thickly cut, loosely pressed, perfect moisture. I like C&D flakes, as they are very easy to prep - they fall apart into thin broken strips with just the slightest touch, so there's basically no prep at all, just pinch some out of the jar and stuff it in the bowl. The tin note is a vinegary tang and strong nutty burley. The date on the tin indicates this tin is 10 months old.

Strong nutty burley is first and foremost in the flavor profile, and is nearly overwhelming if you aren't prepared for it. As you smoke, the Virginias and perique come in to play. Soon, the flavor settles and melds - the best I can describe it is a light and balanced VaPer with a big burley backbone. Smoked very slowly and coolly, the Virginias come a little more to the forefront. The perique component is well balanced - subtle and fruity on the tongue when smoked slowly, bright spice and pepper when puffed a bit faster and/or snorked. Upon tamping and relighting, perique makes itself more obvious and the burley jumps out front again...not that it ever left the picture.

Easy to smoke, requiring a fewer than average number of relights for a flake. I find that it needs no drying time straight from the tin.

I am a big fan of C&D blends and burley, but Burley Flake #1 was a major disappointment and 'not palatable to my palate.' I found it overwhelmingly strong from beginning to end, with no redeeming qualities. It did not present any discernible flavor, but it did have a bitter edge to it. There may be more than just a ‘splash' of perique. The negative qualities of this blend intensified as I proceeded down the bowl, and I gave it many chances in different pipes. I'm hoping my tin dated September, 2009 was just a bad blending run.

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this blend 2.0 out of 10.

Cornell and Diehl’s Burley Flake #1 is the third blend in this series I’ve sampled, also the third I have particularly enjoyed. My tin is dated 08-27-19. It presents as broken flakes ranging from red gold to reddish medium brown. Tin note is silage that’s just starting to molder, fragrant, earthy, vegetal, and woody. It loads, lights and smokes fine straight from the tin, making plenty of semi-floral, woody, grassy smoke. Tastes are delicious variants of the tin notes and combusted scents, with rich, interesting side streams that include nuts and delicate spices. Feel free to pull on it if that’s how you like it, but I prefer to keep it barely lit, to better enjoy the more ephemeral notes available to a patient smoker. Strength builds gradually for me to past medium. Tastes build close to full, earthy, woody, sweet, savory, barely spicy, and more bitter as it’s smoked down. Room note is pleasant. Aftertaste is the best of the smoke.

BF1 is an immediate favorite of mine, as natural a blend as I have smoked, a quintessential VA/Bur with just “a splash” of KY and Perique. 4 stars.
