Daughters & Ryan - Rimboche SJ

I had bought a 40 gram tin of ol SJ several years back and found it a doable substitute for my then-standard va/p Louisiana Red, with the caveat that SJ was more spicy and also more powerful, and dryer.  More recently I had gotten ahold of a larger 3½ ounce cottage cheese tub.  Unfortunately I had not the brilliance to think of re-hydrating this tub.  Admittedly, while I don't mind drying a tobacco that's a little too moist, moistening one that's too dry has always been kind of a turn off.  The result was that I found this one harsh, with a subdued sweetness, more spice than I really cared for, and less flavor overall than I might've gotten...?  I soldiered through half this tub and gave the rest to my neighbor who was looking for something different to roll cigarettes with.  No word on what he thought of it.  My favorite thing about this blend is the picture of the fellow on the tin, who bears a resemblance to my uncle circa 1958.  I see this is a comparatively empty review I've just written but I found the tobacco too spicy and harsh in its native bone-dry state to think of much else.  One who wishes to put the effort into hydrating the contents of the tub will surely find this blend more enjoyable than I did.

After smoking this, I would have to say that giving it several months to age is key to a great smoke. I fist purchased a 40 gram tin at the New Orleans Pipe Show this past October. When I opened it, I was a little disappointed. It was dry, smoked hot, and had very little flavor. So, I stuck it in a mason jar and put it in the back of the closet. And there it sat for about seven months...

About a month ago, I had ordered some tobacco and needed a few empty mason jars, so I brought out this one out and started to smoke it. The months had been very kind to it! The Virginias started to pop and the Perique melded with those Virginias to make a most enjoyable smoke. It still tended to smoke hot and was definitely dry, but I found that if I loaded my pipe and gently exhaled through it, it would add just enough humidity to make it burn a little slower.

After allowing the tobacco to age in a mason jar, it became a much different from when it was first opened. It was harsh and raw when I first tried it, but now it has begun to sing. I think I'll by the 3.5 oz offering, put it in a jar, and see what happens in a year. I may be back with an update!

Reviewed as a cigarette tobacco: A pretty good smoke, somewhat reminiscent of American Spirit Black. The perique here gives me more peppery zing and less raisin. The strength from the Perique is a welcome addition. Could benefit from some lighter Va in the mix to light that component. Earns a B from me.

I was expecting too much perhaps. I found this, right out of a freshly opened tin, to be rather dry. It's OK but I can't really get too excited about this. I have seen in other reviews "generous amounts" of perique but while it's detectable, "generous" wouldn't be my word for it. Wasn't bad, just underwhelming. I want to give it 1 star but don't want to slam the stuff either, it just wasn't for me.

This is a pretty darn good blend. I had no contact with it when it was the RYO cut, just as this pipe cut.

The virginias are of very good quality. The perique is very good as well, and it is present in goodly quantity. The smoke is full, the mouth feel is pleasant, the nicotine level is adequate.

Rimboche S.J. comes dry in the bag. It lights readily and does burn pretty quickly to a fine ash--but how pleasant that short trip is. I have taken to mixing some McClelland 5100 with it to slow the burn a bit, but the straight blend is perfectly fine as it is, especially when I need a less contemplative, tasty smoke.

Recommended.

Top quality Virginia and the St. James Perique is just shy of moderate strength. Deliciously present, but not at all overwhelming, it offers that wonderful fermented sweetness VaPer smokers love. I especially enjoy using this blend as the foundation for my own blending experiments. Mark Ryan, the man behind D&R knows quality tobacco and has played a key role in sustaining Perique's veritable cottage industry. Not surprisingly, it ages beautifully. 14 oz bags are reasonably priced, but best transferred to mason jars for putting away.

The D & R Tobacco house is characterized by making completely natural and good quality tobaccos. Rimboche S.J. It is made up of brilliant virginias and the famed St. James Parish perique. The cut is halfway between a shag and a ribbon, although the shag part is not as fine as Penny Farthing from G.L. Pease, for example. This type of cut, together with the lack of moisture it contains, makes tobacco burn quite quickly, for that reason it is advisable to smoke it slowly and in a pipe with sufficient capacity, if you don't want to be left wanting more.

It is a tobacco that is smoked fresh, smooth, rich and with a different flavor nuance from other va / per, which seems to me an incentive to want to try it. The virginias are a bit sweet and citrusy and the perique is smooth and fruity. A fine and quality tobacco is appreciated, which does not heat the pipe or sting the tongue. Maybe it's a bit irregular, but if the stars are aligned you can have a very good smoke.

I have heard somewhere that this mix is no longer available, although it is not known if this lack will be temporary or permanent.

Smells like wheat bread straight out of the tin. The Virginia is less sweet than Rimboche AP with more wood and Earth notes. The spiciness of the Perique is more muted and more of the stewed fig flavor comes through. This one does not punch as too sweet, nor too spicy. Upon initial light, I would have thought otherwise as the Perique seemed very prominent, but quickly balanced out. Quality, straight-forward, and consistent smoke.

Rimboche S.J. has a sweet tin note with notes of citrus, very earthy, and slightly woodsy. The taste is VA forward with notes of citrus, earthy, woodsy (a little more in the taste of it then in the tin note) and a herbal note that moves in and out at times. The perique is very sweet, notes of plumb, raisin, and a lighter note of fig. The pepper is competing with this sweetness and at times takes the lead but then the sweetness takes back over again. The strength and nic are solidly at the medium level as is the taste profile although I do get a little more smoke in the puff than what I usually find in a medium strength blend. Does not bite and it can be repeated throughout the day but I had no desire to smoke it all day long myself. This is easy to recommend but it is not as complex as Solani 633 or Sam Gawith's St. James Flake but it is very good and always available at a very good price point. I am considering picking up a pound to see how this one ages. 2 or 3 years may move this one into the highly recommended category.

The tin note is dried apricot with fig. The smoke is cool and dry. The 2 thirds are herbal with a little spiciness and a sugary-creamy taste. The last third may be on a plum and wine (porto?) side - but not easy to identify. It is a light perique. No big issues (no harsh, no bite, no tasty mess ...) but not my cup of coffee.
