Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) Greve Hamilton Blandning
(2.26)
Notes: Swedens foremost pipe tobacco with a clean taste and sweetness from the tobacco itself. No artificial fooling around allowed in these pouches. Can easily be smoked with great pleasure occasionally or for, as many Swedes do, a lifetime. The Grev Hamilton Blandning has been sold since 1924.

I had very high hopes for Hamilton's, knowing that it is the most popular brand of pipe tobacco in Sweden (and has been for decades); but boy, were those hopes dashed! And I mean like sledgehammer-dashed. Seriously? This? If this is indeed the No. 1 brand in Sweden it can only be for reasons of nostalgia and tradition and nothing else. "My father and grandfather did their business in a wooden outhouse, so I too will do my business in a wooden outhouse!"
First of all, it's not even easy to write a review of Hamilton's because in order to do so one would need to smoke some of it first and this.crap.just.does.not.want.to.burn. Eight relights per bowl is nothing unusual, and there seems to be a fine line between puffing like a loco and the pipe going out completely. The taste and consistency is... As if, at the end of the day at the tobacconist's, after all the cheapest and nastiest brands have been cut and packed, the floor was swept and the dregs packed in pouches of Hamilton. It's also by far the dirtiest tobacco I have ever had, the pipe keeps popping and gurgling as you smoke it, takes about twice the time to clean because of all the nasty black goo and soot left behind, and two cleaners used is pretty much the minimum as the first one will be soaking wet and covered in the aforementioned black goo after being pulled through the stem.
Never again anywhere near my pipes. If I'm somewhere in the middle of nowhere sometime and find a small kiosk there and the only brand they have available is Greve Hamilton Blandning, I will seriously consider trying to do without my pipe for a few days.

This is the most common pipe tobacco in Sweden, sold in all supermarkets and convenience stores. I started smoking pipes with this blend, but I soon gave it up for more pleasant brands. I did buy a bag just the other day out of curiosity and this is what I found:
The taste is very harsh with little actual tobacco flavour. Fair amount of nicotine but nowhere near Dunhill Nightcap. It will cause tonguebite unless smoked very carefully or with a filtered pipe. I dont consider myself a lightweight and I enjoy full strength tobaccoes, sometimes I even smoke pure latakia, but this is just awful in every way.
To sum it up in an elegant and artisctic manner; smoking Hamilton is like inhaling exhaust fumes with a slight aroma of old boots and potato peels.

Won't stay lit, no flavor at all. Cheap tabacco that you'll find everywhere if you're out of tabacco and desperately need some. It's the blandest tabacco i ever tried.

I have no real nostalgic attachment to "the Count", other than a vague memory of dabbling with it, and Caravelle (a terrible rumflavoured monstrosity), many many years ago when I was just starting smoking. If I remember correctly, it didn't really strike any chords with me back then, and I can't say that it did now with the pouch I got a week ago or so, either.
If there's anything positive to be said about GGHB, then I suppose it is that it's at least somewhat passable all things considered.
Pretty good nicotine hit, though. Aroma is quite sweet, and a decent, but not remarkable body and taste. It is however quick to burn the tongue and gurgle if not smoked carefully. Absolutely nothing to fret about that this is not easily obtainable, there are literally hundreds of other blends that blows this this out of the water without even trying.
But, if you absolutely must have a smoke, and there's nothing else available, then I suppose it's at least marginally better than shredded garbage. Personally, I think I'd rather give up smoking altogether if GGHB was the only choice.
Not recommended. There's no excuse to smoke this when there are so many other good blends available, even in the cold and harsh anti-tobacco climate of Sweden.

Have smoked and really enjoyed GGHB for 20+ years, but not any more. Since 01-01-2011 the EU requires pipe smoking tobacco to be more coarse cut (min 1.5 mm wide) and the manufacturer - Swedish Match (SM) - has complied. I wouldn't be concerned by this alone but it appears that SM has also changed the flavor. When opening the pouch there is an apparent 'fruity' scent and, in the hand, moist is more noticeable. My first impression wasn't GGHB at all, but cherry or vanilla flavored Borkum Riff (me not like). To add to the disappointment the tobacco now burns differently, probably because of the coarse EU-cut, so the slow, relaxed smoking style has become memory. A truly sad result from 'product development'.
