John Patton Moe's Confetti
(3.13)
John's most popular blend. A combination of burleys give this a nutty and slightly sweet taste with a wonderful room note. Best smoked in a corn cob pipe.

The chocolate notes are very much Prince Albert-like, except it's a deeper, richer taste. The burleys' molasses sweetness seems more Carter Hall-like with a little nuttiness that you'd expect from a burley mixture. The molasses is mild, but always noticeable. I suspect a little deer tongue may be present as well. Easy to pack, easy to keep lit, burns evenly and consistently to the very end with no goop, and no chemical notes. It won't bite even if pushed. If you like Solani's Aged Burley Flake, you will find this a very nice change, and I could see switching from one to the other just to keep your burley smoking life interesting. I'd say there is a little resemblance in the burley profile to several Uhle's and P&W blends, though none quite have the burley-chocolate taste that this has. The after taste pleasantly lingers and the room note is very pleasing. Three and a half stars.

The cut is a slightly irregular short ribbon, and the colors are dark and light browns. The pouch note is slightly sweet with chocolate tendencies.
This is a basic mild burly, and it is a great smoke. It is slightly sweet and nutty. It is am easy smoke and is a tasty thing to smoke that does not require much attention. I never got an ashy or bitter taste even at the bottom of the bowl.
This is a smoke in the same camp as Uhle's Blend 00 or PS Pressed burley. It is easy to recommend to anyone who wants a step up from the OTC burley blends.

For a burley smoker this is a wonderful blend. It is mild, biteless, has lots of taste and has the old fashion burley aroma and flavor. It is not complex, it is not fancy, but it is a good blend. It is an all day type of blend that satisfies. It is of course burley with a flavoring reminding me of chocolate but not powerfully so. It is great in a cob. It comes at the perfect moisture level. It is an all brown tobacco, and the pouch aroma is burley with a sweet aroma. It packs easy, it lites on the first light and it gives a nice mild smooth flavor to the smoker. It smoked all the way doen to a grey ash without having to relight and burns a little slower than some of John's other blends. If your looking for complex, this is not it, if you want a good all day blend, this is it.

I am pleased to be able to review a John Patton blend at last. JP seems to be something of a burley champion, in particular a champion of Carter Hall. Moe's Confetti is a little like CH, a little like Prince Albert, and a little like neither.
I have tried MC in several pipes and am trying to figure out what he has used in the blend. It has a very pleasant taste, doesn't burn, and produces a great deal of smoke. There is the Pinkerton and Middleton nutty flavour in there, but something a little sweeter and fragrant as well. My only quibble is that it burns quite quickly, and I wondered if he might have used a little 5 Brothers in the mix. Knowing JP from his forum posts, I can only assume that if it burns quickly it does so for a reason, and that I shall find out that reason in due course.
Pace John Patton, and at the risk of insulting one who seems to be a great benefactor to the pipe fraternity, MC is a great blender. I have been able to produce my own version of Count Pulaski by combining MC with Altadis Backwoods. With the same ingredients, but varying the combination, I can almost replicate 4noggins Down by the River. Not quite though -- Rich is way ahead of me in the blending department. I find that the confetti really goes well with the Backwoods aromatic flavour.
Will be ordering more: thanks John Patton

Simple recipe. 1 part Carter Hall and 1 part Walgreen's Blender's Gold brand Golden Burley. Nothing special here.

A fantastic "OTC" style codger blend; sweet, nutty & smooth; a perfect all day blend that is extremely smooth and consistent, never bites. It has earned a place in my regular rotation; a delightful blend!

John Patton - Moe's Confetti.
As Burleys go, they don't come much better than this. Made me remember how much I enjoy a good Burley!
The pouch has a slightly aromatic note emanating from it, not one to suggest 'heavily cased', but flavoured nonetheless. As always with 4noggins, the moisture of it's perfect: slightly moist, but that's how I like it.
The smoke tastes fabulous. The Burley's rich, toasty, rustic, and nutty, and there's a very delicate top-note of added flavour: slightly chocolatey, slightly sweet, with a tiny touch of something fragrant. But, although it's notable, it isn't heavily added. The burn from Moe can't be faulted: fairly slow, cool, and independent. I don't get any tongue bite throughout a bowl, whether it's sucked or sipped.
Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: lovely.
A very well accomplished blend. Four stars:
Highly recommended.

A very pleasant smoke. Sweet and earthy with mild notes of nuts and spice. The spice was an unexpected surprise. A little note of cocoa. I could smoke this all day with no problem. Nice simple blend that relaxes the mind.
Mild to medium in body and flavor. Flavoring is very mild. Burns very well.

I found this blend to be a complete disappointment. This is a surprise for me as I consider Storm Front a favorite and have enjoyed all the other Patton blends. John Patton is known for burley and because this is primarily a burley blend I was ready to be blown away.
What I got was a crappy aromatic. Yes, that is what this blend is to me. It should not be considered a burley at all IMO. I am surprised by those who compare this to the Burleys offered by Uhles. While those blends do have a topping, they are lightly applied to accentuate the natural flavor of the burley. MC is heavily topped with some raunchy chocolate topping that has a artificial chemical after taste that overwhelms the burley.
There are some reviewers who say that this is a combination of a few store bought tobaccos. If so, I have done better blending on my own by combining Carter Hall with heavily topped aros. Hell, I would rather smoke half captain black white mixed with Carter Hall.
It is with complete honesty that I give this one star. At $43 a pound bulk, it is also way overpriced for a crappy aro. If you want burley, buy a tub of Carter Hall or SWR and enjoy a better smoke while you are saving money. Or simply buy a pound of Mac Baren Golden Extra for $38 at SP.

Well for me this is the ultimate OTC Burley. Rich, smooth codger Burley with a cocoa sweetness. Just an easygoing Burley, easy to like and for me a near perfect morning coffee smoke.
I read in one of these reviews and went to Walgreens to test the theory that this is a mix of Carter Hall and Blender's Gold Golden Burley. Boy it was close, in every aspect. I did a batch that was 1/2 Walgreens, 1/4 CH and 1/4 Prince Albert, and I would bet my paycheck that is exactly what this tobacco is. Identical in every regard. The Walgreens stuff needs a lot of drying time, and Moe's is perfect out of the mail. Add up the cost of components and add the gas you spent driving around to get them and Moe's is cheaper as well.
Patton made a couple classic codger Burleys using mundane components. You could look down your nose at this blend as a mix of three OTC Burleys, or you can see the genius of John coming up with a blend that eclipses its components. Personally I think of John like I do Bob Runowski, a great American pipeman and Burley master. This blend is a winner for Burley lovers and never, ever fails to satisfy.
