4noggins Bald Headed Teacher

(3.37)
The old-fashioned burley taste comes through in full form, nutty and brisk, hitting on tangy notes along the way as the Virginia components catch on. There's just enough Latakia to provide no more than perhaps a seasoning effect.

This is my first review.I'm a relatively new pipe smoker.I have tried many of the recommended tobaccos on this great site.I may not be able to verbalise as you experts but I just have to say that this is a great smoke,by far my favourite so far.A wonderful nutty flavour, the only other tobacco I've tried that it reminds me of is Dunhill 965 I live outside the US but that's no problem to Rich - his and Gloria's personal service is second to none.I'm sure he'd send a sample if you ask.

The burley is most noticeable, nutty and refreshing, with a super mildly sweet finish that's enhanced by the darker tang of quality Virginia. I love that the latakia is used so sparingly! Just the most barely detectable undercurrent of woodsy smokiness. I don't get the vanilla flavor many reviewers mention...there's definitely a pleasant sweetness, but more akin to molasses than fruit or vanilla. I do not detect a topping, unless it's used as sparingly as the latakia is. A mellower, more refreshing sort of American style English that I can easily enjoy in the heat of summer! And with the room note, I can just as easily smoke it indoors as well...wife approved. I do not agree with others who complain this is an aromatic. There is little to zero topping, and far too much natural tobacco flavor present for this to be the case. That being said, don't expect it to punch you in the groin with balkan/English harshness. That's not the kind of tobacco BHT is or tries to be. I find performance and flavor to be better in cob than briar. Less tongue bite, as well. Great job Rich, a classic for me and permanent member of my rotation.

This is one of my go to blends any time of the day or night. The pouch note is captivating, the pack is easy, the charring light lets you know you are in for a wonderful experience and the pipe no matter how big, is never big enough once this magnificant blend gets going. Two thumbs up from pouch to ash at the bottom of the bowl. I highly.. highly recommend you try this.

I really can't add much beyond what other have already written. You have read the reviews, so go and try this blend. I am a fan of several 4noggins blends, and of the store and owner--really wonderful service and great products.

This is a good all day tobacco, and for those wishing for an introduction to blends utilizing Burley and Latakia, I think this is a great one to try.

I don't get the appeal of this one. It's an aromatic, with all the biting goopy-ness that entails. Smells nice, tastes bad, won't stay lit. I couldn't finish one bowl and am tossing the rest of the sample.

This is a phenomenal blend. I got my first taste of it from a free sample with another order. I love the light latakia flavor with hints of smokiness and rich smooth vanilla. This hits the spot when I crave a latakia blend without the full lat-bomb. Most notably about this blend is how everyone who smells it loves the room note. Rarely are people so excited to be in the same room as me as when I am smoking Bald Headed Teacher! I love the naming as well because it invokes an image that I equate to this delicious taste. I always let this blend dry a bit before packing and it burns well. This blend is especially good in a large bowl and given an hour or so to develop and burn through various intricacies.

I got the complimentary sample with an order from 4Noggins. At first, I loved the tin note. I could smell Vanilla in the background even though it isn't listed as having any.

I found this intriging as I wanted a baccy that I could smoke at the hunt camp without offending anyone.

The first 2 bowls I hated. It was too moist. I let the rest of the sample dry and by the 3rd bowl, I liked it enough to commit to 8 oz to give it a really good test.

I am half way through my 8 oz and here is what I find. But first let me say I generally DO NOT LIKE burly.

It is my new everyday baccy, WHEN THERE ARE OTHERS AROUND. I have gotten several compliments about the room note. I love the fact it packs well, stays lit, and usually ends up with very little dottle. The Lat levels fills my needs for a english flavor, but the vanilla flavor fades in and out so I find the flavor changes. Thinking I was crazy about sensing the vanilla as no one else mentions it, I was vindicated when I got a little "juice" from my straight pipe and got, well, vanilla. Maybe it is just the burly...but to me I get vanilla.

So in short I love the flavor changes naturally present in the bowl. One word of opinion: I jar 1.5 oz at a time to dip into and leave the rest in a larger jar. Before I top off the smaller jar I leave it sit 12-15 hours spread out on a plate to allow it to dry. Way too moist for me straight out of the bag. (Edit) I have not had the issue wih the baccy being too moist to this degree in my last 3 orders. I only dry 1-2 hours with the newer batches. The last batch almost had an artificial banana smell over the vanilla. Sounds weird, but sure smells nice, and same great taste.(end of edit)

I am halfway through my first 8 oz. I will be ordering another 8 within a month.

(second edit) I have discovered this has become my "go to" blend. Smoking amidst mixed company, mowing the lawn, walking the grouse thickets, strolling in the park I reach first for this baccy unless my craving is for something specific like a good Lat blend or other. This tobacco is always polite, mild in the N department(N is NOT why I smoke), stays lit, little dottle and no bite(for me). It is also the only baccy I have 2 pipes dedicated too. A nording freehand and a well mannered Stanwell 103. I do prefer it in a billiard stye bowl as opposed to the dublin, as I find the dublin looses sweetness near the bottom half. I have tried it in a Sav 111 and am thinking of re dedicating the Nording to a baccy better suited to that style bowl as the tast in the larger, straight sided bowl of the Sav maintains sweetness better.

This is my fly fishing blend. Just enough flavor to be interesting, but uncomplicated and well behaved when your mind is focused elsewhere. Nutty, a whiff of nougat, leather and smoke, warm and comfortable. Fantastic smell. In a cob with coffee in the travel mug, morning sun warming you up on a crisp dawn, as you watch the light dance on the stream...heaven.

Funny, a few years ago I meant to order a few ounces to try it out, but accidentally ordered a pound. What great luck!

I just cracked open a jar that sat for two years. Wow! It’s even better with a little age, now there’s a very noticeable cinnamon or nutmeg flavor with some kind of baked pastry.

*update 12/21 Out of the gate this blend still holds its own. Haven’t smoked it in a while but wow it is good and worth having in the cellar if you like burleys.

*Update 8/2018 This blend has become too sweet for me and too wet. I still enjoy but find myself reaching for BigNBurley or Morley’s Best if I’m wanting Burley and Latakia.

Absolutely lovely blend. If you like Burley blends this is a must try. The Latakia does not overpower, instead it adds a nuance that is delightful and very different from anything else I have tried. I ordered this with a few other 4Noggins blends and it was by far my favorite (Down By The River being my #2 favorite of the bunch). I just ordered a larger order of BHT to keep on hand.

After a few years of this piping business, I've at least figured out what I really like. English/Balkan style tobaccos, and the very American unsauced Burley-Based stuff.

Bald Headed Teacher is a great tobacco for when I can't figure out exactly what I want to smoke. It's burley upfront, and while I'd prefer to not use the wording directly off the manufacturer's description, is only "seasoned" with some bright virginias and smokey latakia. The latakia is like deja-vu, a whiff of a familiar smell you can't really put your finger on but elevates this blend just enough to add some mystery to a tobacco that otherwise would be one of those non-contemplative, everyday smokes.

Nicotine is pretty stout on this one, but not a head swimmer. Just right.

The Lat is minor enough in this blend that the room note isn't "Tire Fire" either, which my wife believes to be a good thing.
