I haven't tried a new blend in a while and when I found this in a pass-around-box I thought I'd give it a try.. I love C&D Burleys, and the Bayou series also isn't too bad to my palate, so, why not?! 😉

Opening the tin note makes it very clear this is a flavored blend! A fruity and sweet scent welcomed me, quickly to be followed by some sour-smoky dark fired leaf, as well as some very nice and warm bready quality that I really like. It's hard to pin-point the added flavoring, but after the tin aired out for a moment it's not too strong and it somewhat contributes to the warmth of the tin note.

First few puffs tickled my nostrils as I blew out the smoke and a pleasing aroma started developing. Bready and nutty sweetness (an interplay between the burleys and Virginas?) with some nice fruitiness inbetween (Perique?). The initial sweetness fades a bit and leaves room for a pleasing spiciness to show. The flavoring may contribute to the fruity-sweet notes, but it's definetly far less obvious than in the tin-note, well done! Notes of earth and pepper linger.

Interesting enough for me to consider smoking it again and see, if this could become a companion to me. Not burley-ish enough for me to instantly fall in love with it. Yet I can see its fruity-sweet and bready/nutty and spicy aroma could be a nice change of pace for warmer summer days.

Exhausted Rooster.

Also this one blend is different from what I could expect. Just mellower than Bayou Morning Flake, but stout nevertheless. Plus I would never imagine it was scented in some way. I would dare some liquor (brandy?), applied with light hand, so that it disappears after the first third.

As per the Bayou Morning Flake, this is a masculine smoke with strenght and body. It likes moderate sipping, but never turns hot and/or bitey, it turns unpleasantly bitter instead... The Perique is applied as a seasoning component, the Virginia is the star of the show but, again, sweetness is quite little. The dark Burley adds woody tones, no nuts o cocoa.

Again, I have experienced a blend of very good quality, but miles different from what I’m used to smoke.

A couple of years old tin that smells of rum and raisins or eggnog. That's a surprise, I thought it had no topping! So this is a good, strong aromatic, the nicotine is quite present. The flavor profile is earthy, spicy and surprisingly cigar like but not at the same time. The topping is there most of the time, raisin sweet rum molasses.

I prefer to smoke it a bit dry so that the topping recedes a bit as I'm not an aro smoker. I certainly highly recommend it to amateurs of strong aromatic tobaccos.

Sweet red virginias complemented by burley and a barely noticeable amount of perique, everything here is done with restraint I won’t say that the flavors interweave each other but I would say that this one was probably made to be as unobtrusive as possible nothing here distracts your attention if you’re doing something else i would not call it boring either it’s just there, the nicotine is barely noticeable, great on a size 3 to 4 pipe kinda meh in something bigger, Would I buy it again...don’t think so , C&D has so many other blends that are more interesting and cheaper.

The tin art and the name of the mixture seem to me to be one of the nicest I've seen. The reader will judge if the life of the rooster is enviable or, on the contrary, it is worthy of compassion. For my part, the inflated "chins" that hang down seem a bit ambiguous to me and, why not say so, also a bit "murky".

Once the pipe is lit, the well-balanced ingredients provide a smooth and pleasant flavor, where all the components can be recognized, reminding me a bit of tobaccos like Hal O' The Wynd (Rattrays) or Scottish Cake (Robert McConnell), except in art of tin than in those other brands is more sober (stupid smile).

It seems to dry very quickly once the tin is opened, so I had to rehydrate it a couple of times. I don't know to what extent the flavor will have altered a little after that operation. However, it remained an interesting tobacco, balanced and pleasant to smoke. In any case, I have some more tin to be able to taste it in its original state.

I’m not really sure why I like this but I really do.

I’m not one to dissect the various components of flavor. My experiences more the sum of the parts, the blend as a blend and not as a collection of individual tobaccos.

As a blend, this has a bitey introduction, but like a cinnamon candy (and there are no notes of that spice here, it’s just an analogy, although cinnamon would compliment this somehow), the bite fades to reveal a rich flavor profile. About halfway through the bowl I pick a subtle note of, what seems to me, caramel. Interestingly, now some 15 minutes after I’ve finished my pipe, some souvenir of that caramel still lingers in my mouth, though not really as an overt taste sensation. It’s difficult to describe, unfortunately.

And at about the same time, at least this early morning, I developed an intense craving for something containing cream, and my morning cappuccino afterwords was just more welcome and satisfying than is typical. We’re it late afternoon, I might have opted for a single small scoop of softened vanilla ice cream, perhaps dusted with just a pinch of chocolate mix (or that cinnamon I mentioned - or both), and savored slowly with a very small spoon. Somehow, ER invites such a dairy desert (just a touch though) afterwords.

Exhausted Rooster comes in a fairly broken flake that I found a bit of a chore to rub out. The tobacco didn't require any drying before smoking though. The tin note presents an odd ketchup like smell that I'm told is a sign of a well aged Virginia. There's also notes of fruit and baking spices.

The first thing I noticed when I lit the bowl was a fairly strong sweetness that overpowered any other flavor notes that might be present. The sweetness died down after the first quarter of the bowl and allowed the fruit and baking spice to come through, particularly clove. There is a slight hint of pepper and bread as well. In the second half of the bowl, the clove becomes more dominant and the sweetness transforms into a champagne like flavor.

I found Exhausted Rooster fairly difficult to keep lit for an extended period of time, which I'm thinking might have more to do with my inexperience. With the strength level near medium I'd consider this an afternoon smoke, and the unique flavor is a bit of an acquired taste for your average smoker.

Exhausted Rooster remains to me as probably one of C & D's best tobacco. It's a very well balanced Virginia and Perique that, through the addition of some DFK makes it a very spicy and hearty smoke. And the Perique, being very fruity, brings an interesting contrast to the overall spiciness. I don't know if there is a topping in ER but I swear that I detect, somewhere among the fruitiness and the spiciness, something akin to a very light touch of eggnog!

A really nice blend with some complexity. Virginia and Perique are the stars, with some nice support from the Burley.

Not as full as most top quality straight Virginias, but not bland and weak.

Strength is mild to medium.

Slightly sweet, fruity and some nuttiness.

3.5 stars

I agree with other reviewers that this smokes more like a burley than a VA. It is very smooth and subtly sweet. The perique is mildly present and pleasant. Where I disagree with other reviewers is in the strength. I'm no heavyweight, but for a C&D burley blend with perique to boot, this is very mild; not wimpy but mild.

Just as a side note, I didn't really get the name, "Exhausted Rooster." But my wife said it was rather suggestive. "Well, what do farmers normally keep roosters to do?" she asked. Maybe the blenders thougth this would be a good smoke after some hard work of egg fertilization. I'll report back and let ya'll know.
