As the name suggest a mellow cool smoking tobacco blended from old belt air cured Virginia flake with a very discreet Mahogany flavour, but we have had reports of a creamy almond flavour. The flavour is discreet as a background flavour for those who don’t like an overly sweet tobacco, but is predominant enough to give a pleasing room note for the non smokers.

GH have now started merchandising this in 50g packs here in the UK. This is predominently air-cured old belt virgnia in flake form. It rubs out easily, holds the charing light although, it's a little high on moisture content and benefits from a little advance drying.
This, I believe, is GH 'Mahogany' (tinned version), but milder and more mellow; the casing however, reminds me of 'Ennerdale' although it's less harsh and less pronounced. There is a wonderful natural sweetness through the smoke and it burns cool with no tongue bite.
As a general rule I do not like heavily cased tobaccos, so 'Ennerdale' is a 'bridge too far for me', but I do like this offering; the casing is a background - you know it's there, but it never steps forward to overpower the smoke - this tobacco would change my mind about cased tobaccos - generally. The room note is the same as 'Mahogany' if not better and it is very pleasant indeed.
There is a creamy nature to the smoke as it develops through the bowl that reminds me a little of MacBaren Navy Flake, but this is a far superior smoke.

Gawith Hoggarth - Mellow Mahogany.
I opened this up, not knowing what I'd get; the pouch said broken flake so I wasn't sure. Once opened, the pouch revealed some slightly broken flakes; nothing like I'd describe as 'ready rubbed', to be fair it's closer to being what I'd class as a flake instead of a broken flake.
The pouch gave a slightly woody/floral smell and this comes over in the smoke; however, the smoke tastes a lot more woody than floral. As well as this flavour, I also get a kind of dark fruit sweetness from the smoke; this is nowhere near as prominent as the woody note but noticeable nonetheless.
I love the room note from this blend, it's one of the woodiest I've experienced! There's also an extra bonus; even though the note's quite full there's not a great deal of actual smoke in the room.
I'm pleasantly surprised by this; it's a very enjoyable smoke, it falls just short of full marks!

It's been over a decade since I've had but a few tins of Mahogany Flake, so comparisons are, by necessity, vague and of little value. Suffice to say that upon opening a fresh pouch Mellow Mahogany, it stirred recollections...if there was no name on the pouch, would I have thought "Mahogany"?
This comes as a broken flake. Which means a fistful of flake was folded over and stuffed in the pouch: some of it got broken. Along with the Mahogany aroma was the (in)famous Lakeland scent as well; which some adore and others abhor.
The tobacco and aromatic agents were fairly evenly matched throughout each bowl. And smooth! Excepting their ropes, I've always found the GH flakes and mixtures to have a velvety mouth feel; so it is here. I've now smoked a fair bit of this, and hope to smoke more; of the GH flakes, it may be my favourite. If you like their Best Brown No.2, you'll like this, it seems like the same tobacco but with the Mahogany flavouring.
