Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Mellow Mahogany Flake
(2.50)
As the name suggest a mellow cool smoking tobacco blended from old belt air cured Virginia flake with a very discreet Mahogany flavour, but we have had reports of a creamy almond flavour. The flavour is discreet as a background flavour for those who don’t like an overly sweet tobacco, but is predominant enough to give a pleasing room note for the non smokers.

The old belt Virginia provides a lot of tangy dark fruit, light tart and tangy citrus, earth and wood, with a little vegetative grass. The floralness is very obvious, but loses a little strength in the last half of the experience. I also get a hint of Lakeland. It also sports a light perfume essence. The very woody, earthy, sour and sweet mahogany topping tones down the tobaccos a bit. Won’t bite or get harsh, but does sport a rough edge here and there. The strength and taste levels are medium. The nic-hit is a couple of steps past the center of mild to medium. Burns cool, clean, and a little slow as flakes will with a mostly consistent sweet, sour, floral flavor that extends to the lingering after taste. The room note is a little stronger. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and requires some relights. Not quite an all day smoke.

Years ago, when there were still old Victorian public toilets dotted around Belfast, I used to feel the need to use one. It was not a pleasant experience, and the abiding sense impression I retain is the stench of urinal cakes. I had a similar experience on trying Mahogany Flake - the floral essence is so vinegar-like and overwhelming that I felt nauseous, and later an allergic reaction set in. Obviously I'm not cut out for these Lakeland-style florals, so the fault is probably not that of the blend or blender, rather myself. In short, if you have a palate which appreciates floral vinegar Lakeland-style tobaccos then go for it. Otherwise, you can buy some urinal cakes to remind yourself of what you're missing.
Edit: A week or so later after having finished the pouch I'm upgrading this tobacco by a star. The truth is that at bottom the tobacco itself is quality; the overwhelming floral impression recedes somewhat with familiarity and resolves itself into not altogether unpleasant spice. An acquired taste then, but I suspect each smoker will have to try it for themselves to see if it is worth acquiring.

Even though mentioned, to be fair, the flavoring in the description - it's pretty much nonexistent here. Of all the Lakeland tobaccos I've tried so far, this one smells the closest to natural Virginia - citrus, bread, fresh grass, caramel. From the Lakeland essences, only a bit of almond and geranium remains from the years of storage in the jar (2015 excise). A bit of walnut and tan leather from the burley is added to the main scent, but this is more of a load rather than a full-fledged component of the blend. The tobacco contains a large amount of sugar. The color of the tobacco is stained oak.
The tobacco is easy to fill, lights up without any problems. The dominant flavor of Virginia - sweet and baking, a little nut. The strength of the tobacco is medium, the smoking is very mild. The tobacco does not bite, burns extremely slowly and cool - the average pipe is able to please for about an hour! This tobacco is available to any pipe without fear of overheating it. Smoked dry, the ash is minimal.
The aroma of the smoke is also the usual sweetish Virginia with a floral note. The smoke is light, but the aroma in the room is persistent and stays for a long time.
Overall, there is not much more to say about this blend. It is completely unremarkable, but enjoyable, and quite suitable for everyday smoking.
