Cornell & Diehl Cube Cut Burley

(3.00)
C&D combines high grade white and dark Burleys from Kentucky, then make their own small-cut cubes. A light pack will reward you with a delightfully cool, and long lasting smoke. Regarded as a blending tobacco.

I am reviewing several C+D blending tobaccos as a precursor to some blending experiments. I know not many people blend, but these reviews may provide some hints to those wanting to do so.

Definitely a bit milder and slightly more earthy than the dark burley. It provides the kind of airy "toasty" yet bitter smell and flavor familiar to fanciers of this mutation. Probably a good balance to denser flavors of burley and va.

This was too harsh for me. I added it to a canister of OTC burley blends that I've been mixing together for the past year. My hope is that a good dose of C&D Cube Cut Burley will add complexity to the sweetness of the OTC Burleys. As much as I'd like to enjoy the C&D Burleys, I'm finding them too much for my taste. I'll leave them to the Veterans.

Comment = Ok Burley Taste, was way to Dry, the small cubes don't stay in the pipe while smoking, Lane Limited's BLWB is a much better Burley

Lately I have been getting tongue bite from trying Virginia blends, and decided to take a turn towards burley blends. Although this wonderful cube cut burley is listed as a blending tobacco, I smoke it straight. A very cool and dry smoke with lots of flavor and no bite at all. Produces a lots of smokes. Pretty easy to light the pipe and keep it lit. I gravity fill my pipe, tamp just a little with the tip of my finger before I light it. Being cube cut, it burns quite slowly. I can easily get an hour smoke from a medium size bowl. The tin note offers loads of nutty and earthy aroma. While smoking the flavors remain consistent throughout the bowl, deep nutty burley taste, with a little sweetness, wood note, and a little spice probably from dark burley. Not an all day smoke for me but I enjoy coming back to it every now and then. Highly recommended for burley lovers. 3 out of 4 stars.

What you see is what you get. White and dark burleys. The smoke is plentiful, mildly sweet with notes of rye bread and dark chocolate. The dark burley provides just a touch of spice. Be careful if you tip your pipe as this tobacco will fall out, and gravity filling the bowl with a light tamp is the order of the day. Smokes cool and leaves the bowl dry. The nicotine content was hardly noticeable. Could easily be an all day smoke.

Smokes great straight. The cube cut makes packing as easy as it gets. Takes a flame great, but careful, this stuff swells and puffs up big time. Leave extra room in the bowl so you don’t burn your pants. Typical dry earth and chocolate nut flavor, and I get a light sweetness half way through the bowl. Good stuff.

This is some stout Burley! I ordered about four ounces of this after I finished 2 ounces of Crooner, as I figured this is what I loved about that blend. I have to say, this stuff is great! A little stronger than I want, for my preferences, but a good, hearty Burley.

Of course there are the classic Burley overtones of nuttiness, chocolate, and earthiness, but there's a lot more, too. This is three different kinds of burley, which have been pressed into a cake, sliced, and cube cut. It's not as complex as a five year old Virginia, but there is definitely enough complexity to keep one interested.

All in all, this is a great tobacco, whether for a mixer or to smoke straight. Be careful with it, though. It can make your head swim. It's definitely a 3.5 for me. Due to the strength, however, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Also, be careful of little flaming cubes popping out of the bowl while you smoke it.

I rarely smoke this by itself, but it's not that bad alone. Has some burley nuttiness to it. I prefer to use this as a mixing blend for aromatics, giving aromatics a nic hit. Not quite a good of mixer as five brothers, but not bad. If you are looking for an awesome cube cut burley blend, try Crooner!

Of what this currently is, I wouldn't call this cube cut. It's more of a crimp cut. No cubes found at all in my purchase. Every c&d blending tobacco I've tried is not cased, so I expected the same with cube cut. I also had a general idea of what to expect. The bag note is earthy, nutty, a light funkiness with very little sweetness. From beginning to end, the flavors a very cigar like with nuts, cocoa powder, spicy pepper notes, dry earth, leather notes and at times, creamy but almost oily. It does have harshness to it but that was expected. If smoked slowly, the harshness doesn't appear, and the spiciness dies down. Overall it's good. Reminds me of a Padron 1000 series cigar but with no coffee notes. I have added a pinch to other blends with good results. Currently is a 63 dollars a pound, which is steep imo, but it's labor intensive to produce.

Plain, nutty, mild, not unpleasant, not sweet to speak of. The smoke isn't harsh. Not a ton to say aside from that. Another reviewer called this a step up from Prince Albert, and i would disagree in terms of taste and complexity. This isn't interesting in any way, but if you just want to smoke some plain tobacco with an inoffensive taste, or if you're some kind of radical minimalist who hates strong tastes maybe, this is the ticket. Probably an outstanding blending tobacco, but I have no experience with that. It does pack, light and burn incredibly well, and it's got a fair bit of nicotine. It has got PA beat in the nicotine department. There really are no solid cubes in my bag, more very short ribbons/rectangles/squares.
