Trout Stream is an extremely mild yet heavy aromatic. And I?ll go along with previous reviewers who perceived a butterscotch / caramel taste. More bluntly, it?s like smoking a butterscotch sundae and it proved to be much too sweet for my palate and any true, tobacco taste was not discernible. To wit, I like tobacco in my tobacco. Had the casing been done with a lighter hand, i.e., more subdued, I would have enjoyed it more. I tired of it quickly. TS can be a nice once a week or once a month change of pace smoke but never could I tolerate a steady diet of this blend.

However, I can?t berate this blend for what it is. TS has no bite whatsoever, super great burning qualities and it does not have the characteristic goopiness of many other aromatics. Because of its stickiness/tackiness in the pouch and to minimize relights, I would suggest this blend be packed a little more loosely than with drier blends. I smoked more than one bowl from ?head to toe? without any relights using a light packing hand. I think that Trout Stream would be an ideal blend for a newbie but some veteran pipesters may find this blend overwhelmingly sweet as I did.

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this blend 7.2 out of 10.

This is my first pipe tobacco review. Trout Stream has nearly been an everyday staple in my 5 years as a pipe smoker, so this is a no-brainer as my first review. This is a great example of an aromatic done well. The caramel, butterscotch and slight vanilla tin note is quite pleasant. The tobacco is just a little moist out of the bag. Stays lit relatively well after the initial char light.

The bowl begins with tasting those tin notes of grassy, slight hay and a little nutiness in the background, while the sweet, vanilla, caramel, maple and butterscotch steals the show. These flavors intermittently dance and mingle around throughout the bowl until around the last 3rd or quarter of the bowl is left. From there, the more pronounced tobacco flavors make their way forward. They aren't bitter or harsh but those flavors definitely become more present on the palate, as the beginning sweetness, caramel, butterscotch, nutty and grassy notes dwindle down more into the background. Is a relatively dry smoke with nothing but clean gray ash left in the bowl. The tobacco never bites and has a pleasant, clean tasting finish. The room note is also delectably pleasant and is second to few.

Any easy-going, not too plain, nor too complex 24/7 - 365 smoke. An easy choice for even those who aren't crazy about aromatics.

A solid 3.5 out of four.

When I opened the bag, I was hit with a wonderful caramel/butterscotch flavor. It was ready to smoke right out of the bag. Through several bowls I found that it had more of a mild flavor that dwindled around the last third of the bowl. It burns well all the way through and left a small amount of moisture in the bottom of my pipe. Overall, this a good example of an average aromatic. Nothing crazy but definitely nothing wrong with it.

Like most pipe smokers I started out with aromatics. Before I found TobaccoReviews I found most aromatics overly sweet & moist causing tongue bite so I moved onto non-aro's. Tobacco is outrageously expensive here in Nanny State Australia [50g of tobacco is now over $110] nothing went to waste so I'd mix overly flavoured aromatics with Windsail Virginia to attain a mildly flavoured blend & a better moisture level.

When I found TR & learnt to trust members reviews [A big thank you to JimInks in particular. Apart from his refined palate he & StevieB are the only reviewers who give their sense of nicotine content. Thank you gentleman] I realised that there is such a thing as an aromatic that is not overly sweet & goopy.

Trout Stream is one of them. A mild blend with a mild nic-hit, perfect for a morning smoke with a cup of Liptons tea. TS has a pleasant caramel taste & room note. The bag-note is delicious. The taste of tobacco starts to peek through halfway through a bowl. The bulk pound came from 4Noggins at a moisture level ready to smoke.

My only criticism is that Trout Stream does have a slight astringency during the last 1/3rd of the bowl leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste, which I suspect has to do with my personal oral chemistry.

Although I prefer Butternut Burley, I don't regret buying Trout Stream. If you like mild, not overly topped aro's, you should also enjoy TS. A solid three stars.

Tin (baggie) note is caramel corn and toffee.

After lighting, the butterscotch comes through, with the caramel corn note in the background. The tobaccos can be tasted through the topping, giving this a little more depth than most aromatics.

A nice change of pace after a heavy English or Kentucky dark fired blend, but it does tend to dry my mouth out.

A personal favorite of mine - and not just because it is connected to my militant affinity for trout. Scotty's Trout Stream is just a fine, fine aromatic.

The tin note smells like some odd mixture of maple candy and caramel. As for the taste itself, I genuinely enjoy the understated flavor. Some aromatics seem to overload the palate with sugary sweetness, but not this blend. Instead, Scotty's Trout Stream utilizes cavendish to provide a slightly sweet, muted caramel-esque flavor. It's an odd description, but I would almost liken it to puffing on the light vapors of a marshmallow.

Puff all day, she won't bite you. Just stuff your favorite clenching bowl with some Trout Stream and mindlessly puff away. My favorite way to smoke it comes but a few times per year, when I travel deep into the hills of West Virginia. If you want to find me, take route 33 from Elkins until you hit Rich Mountain Road past Wymer. Turn left, and follow until you find the Old Mill. There, on a misty mountain morning, you're likely to see me... standing in Dry Fork, netting the first Rainbow Trout of the day, puffing away on Scotty's Trout Stream.

A delightful smoke.

I'd been wanting to try Trout Stream for quite awhile, but it isn't always available. It lived up to my expectations. Very sweet and flavorful, a great dessert tobacco. The room/tin note is heavenly as well. Burns well and has no bite. I have a few ounces left for down the road and it will likely become a favorite. A must try for those who enjoy aromatics. 3.5 stars

It's been a while since smoking this blend and I wanted to document what I remember of it and the fact that I did smoke an ounce or two of it. Burned nice and had a light maple flavor. For me I've moved on to English tobacco and never revisit any of the old aromatics I smoked as an early pipe smoker. I remember trying to puff and puff on this blend to get more flavor out of it. I'd bet if I went back to it now I'd actually enjoy it. I'd give it a 2.5 star. Light straight forward non complex cavendish smoke.

There is a light musky smell, that does indeed remind me of a lake (or stream I suppose), as well as a golden nutty sweetness. The leaves are very light and springy, so grab a good handful as it will pack down.

Sparks up instantly to a nice fast burning mellow smoke. Performs much like a cigarette to be honest and would be a good choice for those wanting to knock out a quick break. Throws off a ton of smoke and gave me a few nose crinkles.

This is not a beefy savory smoke, but one that is good for several bowls in succession without being bogged down with the nuisance of exploring its depth.

I smoked aromatic exclusively about 10 or 12 years ago when I was beginning to smoke pipe. It only took few months to get sick of the additive aromas. But I bought some of this because my friend told me that this was less aromatic as others(drug-store blends). It isn't. It smells sweet and tastes flavorful. However I think my taste changes a lot all these years that I find it's too mild for me now.
