(2.87)
Sweet Coconut Twist is an old style rope tobacco from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. flavored with the island scent of coconut.
Sweet Rum Twist - The main feature of this tobacco is the addition of inverted sugars blended and coconut to the 'filter' leaf. This is then spun into a rope form before being made into a roll which is cold-pressed overnight

The dark Virginia is toasty, earthy, woody, a little tangy dark fruity, citrusy and floral, and at times when I wasn't sipping, some cigar notes crept into play. Not sure I believe there's black cavendish in here, but if it is there, it adds nothing of consequence. This is Brown Twist with a mild sweet coconut topping. The topping is pleasant and seems to gather a little strength after a while, but it never overtakes the tobacco. I get a sense of Lakeland here and there, but only in a minor way. The strength is near the center of medium to strong. The taste level is just past that center. The nic-hit is a slot below the medium threshold. Won't bite or get harsh, but does have a few rough edges. Has a mostly consistent flavor. Burns cool, clean and slow with some bitterness in the last quarter of the bowl with a little taste of tar, and some dottle unless you dry it out a bit. You may need to stir up the last quarter. Requires a fair number of relights. The after taste lingers a little. Not an all day smoke.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. - Sweet Coconut Twist.
Because Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. are based in the Lake District, U.K., there's usually a plentiful supply of their blends available from the U.K. dealers I use. However, for some strange reason, S.C.T. couldn't be sourced, so this meant I'd have to run the risk of an import surcharge from the government on a Smokingpipes.com order! Any-who, I got hold of it!
If it's a twist/rope tobacco I always just stick some in my coffee grinder. Despite the girth of S.C.T. it only takes a fast blast to reduce it to a coarse looking mixture which has equal parts of light, medium, and dark brown. Like all flavoured twists it has a stronger aroma of the flavouring once it's been prepared.
The coconuts are much milder than in the unlit aroma. They're notable, but only in a mild supporting capacity to the stout Virginias. These are very flavoursome: rich, rugged, earthy. As well as the Virginias and coconut I notice a sweetness kicking in after a quarter bowl. One of my quibbles with it is it can be a little too warm.
Nicotine: just touching on strong. Room-note: not too good.
Sweet Coconut Twist? Quite nice but nothing spectacular. Somewhat recommended:
Two stars.

Coconut would be a very cool flavor to replicate in a smoke, so will it? The initial aroma from the uncut rope was an unassuming, dull, and lightly sweet. Once cut, I left the room and came back to what I guess could be considered faint coconut with a pleasing "natural" bouquet.
Get a sharp knife, or expect the discs to have big leaf pieces that pack like shredded cardboard and suffer a quick burn rate. Dry the pile out for a few minutes, as it may take an extra match to get going, but once lit, the product burns evenly. Like other flavored ropes I have had, the casing gets lost in the smoke, yet there was always a hint of coconut lingering to lighten things up. Thankfully, things never got too cigar like, even by the end.
When I order something labeled as coconut, I would expect to spend a day in tasting the tropics, so similar Aromatic fans may will want to look elsewhere.

I go back to the mason jar of this every year or so but it remains a bit of a disappointment, even after 8 years. I've never found a way to keep it lit well, aside from excessively drying and mincing it, and even then its temperamental - much more so that plain Brown rope or Brown Bogie.
Coconut? Well, not really. If I try hard I can imagine its coconut, but primarily it is a solid nutty overtone that supersedes the usual leather and cigar notes of brown rope. In that sense it succeeds, but all-in-all its not worth the effort.

I have really grown to like GH tobaccos and knowing that the scents of GH are not really that of an aromatic (at least in my book)I find that I am attracted to the strength of the brand. Coconut Twist doesn't fall short in the strength department. When I first received my "rope" the scent was very strong, confirming that the word coconut and tobacco don't belong in the same sentance. However, upon lighting, the scent quietly moved to the background leaving only a small amount of coconut flavor that actually worked well with the tobacco. CT fell short for me because even though I rubbed it out well and made sure that the wrapper was well mixed with the filler, I still found it to grow bitter as the bottom third of the bowl approached. Having smoked a lot of GH tobacco's I took care in smoking it slowly, but CT still left my mouth without taste for the following two days. I opted to try CT with another pipe and the result was the same. This is a quality tobacco that mixes well with its unusual scent, but it simply isn't for me.

Smells like Hawaiian tropic dark tanning oil. Topping interferes with the dark earthy taste of this twist.
