Tavern Tobacco Co. Thunder Road
(3.29)
After the nightly run over Thunder Road was completed, the moonshiners from the backwoods of N.C. and Tennessee would stop by their favorite joint for a quick one and tales of close calls with the Revenue men. Their favorite smoke was this blend of VAs with a touch of perique smooth with a little kick, just like the white lightnin' they made. A smooth yet powerful blend of five different Virginias with a touch of perique.

I really loved both the blends and the simple tin art provided by the Tavern Tobacco Company, and their tobaccos were excellent as well. Perhaps the strongest VaPer I ever smoked, Thunder Road (I only smoked a sample from a pouch), provided a Virginia that rocked! The Perique was inlaid with reckless abandon and the overall presentation sort of overwhelmed me. If you like lots of flavor and lots of strength, take a trip down Thunder Road if you can find it.

This is the third Tavern Tobacco I try and definitely the one I like the best. It is finely balanced, with the perfect amount of Perique and it burns evenly and remarkably cool. It comes pretty moist, so it's better to leave it dry out a little bit, so it won't become wet or bitter. A good one.

What can you say about a tobacco long gone. It smoked perfectly with very little drying, had a light perique kick, good tasting virginias, and a musty sweet tin aroma. The can was near bursting at the seems to be opened. I may have one more Tavern blend stashed away, but what's gone is gone.

A very good tobacco from the people at Knoxville Cigar! From the tin it looks like it was made by Cornell & Diehl, but as a matter of fact Craig Tarler only did the tinning: the blend is made entirely by Pete, Keith, Mark and all that wonderful bunch of guys. The taste of the tobacco could actually remind also of some McClelland products, minus the bite and the ketchup. It's an excellent ready rubbed red Virginia (with lighter specs here and there), with just the right amount of Perique: it can be felt, but it never becomes too much. It's a fruity, very sweet, slightly piquant and never overwhelming tobacco: if smoked slowly, it takes great benefit in taste and overall enjoyment. Ideal for a long smoke due its slow burning rate, and very satisfying indeed. Ok, it may not be a knock-your-socks off experience, but it's a consistently good product with lots of nuances. It may look a bit wet, but it isn't and smokes quite dry from the beginning. A winner.

My next stop in the evaluation of the new Tavern Tobacco line from Knox Cigar, this blend seems to be ~ to their Boar's Head but with the addition of just the right amount of Perique to the 5 VAs. The rubbed out blend of golden to dark redish brown flakes does not seem to me a ribbon cut. It packs and lights easily and a cool, effortless smoke results. The added Perique makes for a much more varied, stronger taste and more enjoyable overall smoking experience. I thought the taste was exceptionally sweet for an all natural product and would not choose this blend as an all day smoke. It therfore might be enjoyed by aromatic smokers trying to cross into the flake world. However, for a VA/Perique blend, the room aroma was much better than some others in this category. I'll reserve this blend for special situations and stick with Solani 633 and Reiner's Long Golden Flake as my preferred Perique blends.
