Peterson Sweet Killarney

(2.24)
A unique mixture of selected tobaccos including golden Virginia and black cavendish, topped with a cream caramel flavor. To make this wonderful tobacco even more attractive, it is blended with hand-rubbed Virginia flake which results in a fantastic aroma.
Notes: Due to EU regulations, this is now renamed and sold in those countries as "Killarney".

Why so many people hate it? As a new pipe smoker , i have good feelings when smoking this tobacco. I have just emptied my first tin of it and i would say "No bites at all". I love how it lights even if it was a bit moist. The caramel and fruity aromas definitly made others to turn they heads and ask what i was smoking and feeled pleased with the smell(exept my wife). Its so sweet as the name and tends to be a litle strong in the end. I have tried aromatics and non-aromatics and i have decided: i will stay with aromatics forever...there will be people who will disagree with my opinion but hey, it makes me happy and nothing wlse matters.

This was my first ever pipe tobacco. Now I'm pretty advanced on the palate for aromatics and I can attest this one improves during the smoke, particularly the second half. Notes of vanilla and toasted marshmallow, are underlain with strong graham cracker up front, maybe a tiny bit of Tullamore whiskey sweetness. Not too bad, really, and the flavors are very mild. Has a bit of a "kick" of tobacco nicotine strength more than normal.

I really don't understand the vehemently negative reviews of this blend. I am not sure we are even talking about the same tobacco.

I got this in a trade, so I don't know how old it was. Opening the tin, the aroma was of wonderful yellow Virginia with it's characteristic fruity/citrusy nose, and a little musky sweetness, probably from the Maryland Cavendish. There was a noticeable hint of caramel, but only in the background. Mostly what I smelled was yellow Virginia. The moisture content was perfect. The cut seemed to be a mixture of broken flake and ribbon cut. There was none of the catsup smell that I would've expected from flake Virginia.

It packed nicely and lit easily in my cob. The first few puffs threatened to to bite. so I slowed down on puffing, and the blend settled down quickly. The smoke was silky smooth, mild to medium, and seductivley sweet, like the Girl-Next Door wanting to be a vamp. The taste was mostly wonderful yellow Virginia, and a little musky black cavendish. The caramel taste was there, but way in the background...just enough. The sweetness was not a casing taste, but more just from sweet Virginia and a little Cavendish. It was mostly a great yellow Virginia, so it probably can bite if provoked. The room note was just a clean tobacco aroma with a hint of caramel...very pleasant to innocent bystanders, or so I was told.

The flavor never changed all the way to the bottom, and it all burned to a fine ash with no dottle or gurgling. I only had to relight once (probably due to an error in packing on my part).

I found this to be an outstanding blend for what it is...a sweet, what I would call a semi-aromatic, yellow Virginia blend. I like sweet smokes. If you don't, well, all I can say is read the tin. It says it right on the top, "Sweet Killarney". They do not lie.

I think if you were to add just a pinch or two of Latakia to this, you would have a blend comparable to Dunhill's magnificent The Aperitif (my favorite).

If you like sweet tobaccos, but not overly flavored, then this is a blend you'll really want to try. Treat it gentle and it will give you an enjoyable cruise. If you Hot Rod it, I am sure you will probably crash-and-burn.

If you have a big honking sweet tooth, look no further. Sweet Killarney is sweet indeed. A fragrant mix of Burley and Virginia with just a pinch of our good, sugary, friend Black Cavendish, this blend is candy to say the least. When opening the tin, I found the smell to be very pleasant. Sweet, sweet caramel and brown sugar comes to mind, along with a dark chocolate-like smell. It packs very well, but it is wet right out of the tin, so dry it first. While puffing away I remember riding bikes to the corner candy store when I was a kid. This blend smells great out of the tin and even better when burning. The taste is simply sweet and creamy. Nothing too complicated, just a nice, pleasant dessert smoke. Good for after dinner or on those lazy Saturday afternoons when you want to just be with yourself and collect your thoughts. This won't distract you from them with complexity. A word of caution, this blend smokes hot, so draw slowly and patiently. Great for building cake and burns to a uniform white ash. If you want a little old fashioned tasting candy but don't feel like racking up a bill at the dentist, give this a puff. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied fully, and won't need a filling later.

This is not my first dance with smoking a pipe, but it is my first at smoking and english blend. Sweet Killarney in my opinion is a great smoke! My wife was with me when I opened the tin and she loved the smell of the tobacco and loved it even more when I was smoking it. Of course this all came about when I picked up a pipe at a flea markent and found out it was one of Petersons pipes stamped reject, which has not been stamped that way in over twenty years they told me via and email after enquiring. It is to say it burns cool and sweet with very little bite and the aroma fills the room to satisfaction of the booth of us. I very much recommend this tobacco and plan to enjoy it from now on!

This was my first Peterson blend, and boy, was it an education. This tobacco will bite, hard. I had the sores on my tounge to prove it. This blend needs to be babied, and sipped. Peterson blends, I have found, are delecate and tasteful (when treated properly). Sweet Kilarney is no exception. Treat this blend like you would treat your love, kindly and gentally, and it will repay you in full.

New find for me. A nice, sweet smelling tobacco.

A bit wet in the tin, so drying out a bit might be in order.

Smokes wonderfully, though. Good tobacco base, on top of which there's a nice, mouth-filling sweet aroma. This is nice, and compared to some other aromatics, while burning a bit hot, isn't much of tongue-scorcher. Smoked at a leisurely pace this is an excellent smoke. Additionally, this one stays nice 'til the end, not going stale in the last 1/4 bowl like some aromatics do.

Charring light fine. First lighting okay. It might be in order to pay attention when packing as this one apparently goes out a bit easier than most. Otherwise, burns well. Good ash.

Room note got very good remarks from the crowd. Vanilla is what most people instantly recognize. The Caramel-aspect is in my view a lot less pronounced than commented by some reviewers. (Smokewise and otherwise).

Yes, this one's a good tobacco, and will go into the rotation, no doubt there.

I typically only smoke this around the general public due to the pleasant room aroma. It is definitely caramel, caramel, caramel!!! It, however has quality leaf underneath the casing that can satify on occassion. I have never found it to be consistent regardless of the pipe used or tin vintage. Sometimes the casing is overwhelming and at othertimes the leaf sings through. One warning though, you have to smoke it slowly or otherwise you will get tongue-bite. This one I only recommend for something different or a St. Patrick's Day celebration

Tin states: "A unique mixture of Virginia Burley, Maryland Black Cavendish, topped with a Cream caramel Flavor, and blended with hand rubbed Virginia Flake."

Which I take to mean it has 4 components: 1. Burley (grown in Va), 2. Black Cavendish (made from Maryland), 3. Cream Caramel Flavoring, and 4. Virginia Flake

Tin note of caramel, sugar and vegetation. Tobacco is a coarse cut and broken flake of brown, dark brown, tan and a little black. Moisture content is on the high side, many may want to dry it a bit. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is mild to medium, with notes of Cream caramel, it drops to the background withing the first 1/4, then very faint by the 1/2-way point. Taste is mild to medium and somewhat consistent, with notes of tart and tangy savory, very nutty, acidic/spicy, floral, dry hay, creamy, wood, earth, fermented vinegary, toast, orange peel/zest a mildly bitter vegetation background note, and a peppery retro. Virginia Burley is leading with Maryland Black Cavendish and Virginia Flake supporting. Flavoring starts out a strong supporter, the abandons the effort at the halfway mark. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is ok.

Loved this on the initial smoke. The tin scent was sweet and the smoke itself was so pleasantly creamy, chocolatey, and sugary with some raisin/fig like notes.

Can bite, do not dry too long or will burn too hot.

Update:

I don't like this after it airs off. It tastes foul, almost vomit like after letting it sit in a jar for 4 months. Maybe I did something wrong but the mess in the jar is not the amazing aro I tasted the first week.

I recommend to smoke this within the the first month of opening. What it turns into along the road is a total turn off.
