Dan Tobacco Tordenskjold Virginia Slices

(3.02)
A full bodied, golden flake from the best Virginia grades and Louisiana perique. This tobacco gives you a very smooth smoking pleasure with the naturally smooth taste, which the friends of an excellent flakes appreciate it so much.

Grabbed a tin of this last week since I had been craving a VA i could rub out and Bob's Choc isn't available locally. This is a very nice, simple VA that is nothing spectacular except that it is what the label says it is. Allow me to explain....There isn't anything fancy, tricky or gimmicky going on here. This is a well behaved VAper that doesn't bite you, smells decent in a room, and satisfies like a good natural tobacco should. Not at all goopy, doesn't need a great deal of drying, and smokes very well using both the fold and stuff method as well as the rub and fluff method. When this tin is empty I may try to find more or I may try something new, but it will always be an option for me.

This is a pretty straightforward smoke. Upon opening the tin you get the smell of fermented tobacco, a somewhat sweet, almost figish smell. The sweetness rapidly dissapates when the tobacco is taken out of the tin.

It's a flake, so the question of "to rub, or not to rub" arises. I decided to rub it out, which it does very easily. I then decided to pack it into my clay pipe, in order to get a rather pure taste of the blend.

Without question, this is a Virginia blend. It lit easily, and burned evenly all the way through the smoke.

The taste was not overwhelming, in fact it seemed barely there, but then again I love the latakia/perique blends, so this was not surprising. I expected it to smoke hot, but it really wasn't doing so, although I use the "breath method" of smoking, so it's entirely possible that, given a few good puffs, you might find yourself with a bit of a bite. As it was, I could get a small sting in my mouth, but not a real solid bite like I get with aromatics.

The strength was mild. I think smoking this all day would not be unfeasible. But it would be uninteresting.

You see, it's rather a one-note tobacco. There's supposed to be perique in this, I sure couldn't taste it. I certainly wouldn't describe the flavor as full, although there is no doubt that it puts out a fair amount of smoke. Call it medium, at best.

The aftertaste was fairly mild as well, and had none of the richness I'm used to.

So, I guess that, if you're not into nicely full-bodied blends, this is a winner. I'll probably smoke this on occasion, but it'll be on the lower end of the rotation schedule, as opposed to my latakia blends.

Upon opening the tin you detect a mildly sweet topnote. It dissapates very quickly leaving a clean virginia smell. The tobacco is medium brown in color and composed of slightly broken flakes. I prefer to smoke this tobacco by gathering a few flakes, folding them lengthwise, rolling them up, and sticking them into the bowl, folded end first. This tobacco smokes much better with little or no rubbing out.

The blend is supposed to contain perique, but I detect none. The flavor is typical virginia flake, which I like, and is consistent throughout the bowl. This blend always smokes down to a fine grey ash with little or no dottle. Highly reccommended for those that like the taste of tobacco.

This is another tobacco I ordered recently from the Dan Tobacco catalog...and I'm glad I did! This is a somewhat powerful virginia flake that will make neophytes a tad queasy and veterans a tad giddy with excitement!

If you are a fancier of rather one-dimentional, forward tasting tobaccos, then scarf a tin of old Tordenskjold slices. Now, I know the description indicates there is perique in this blend, and near the end of the bowl I may have detected a peppery taste, but would not have known it is perique. So, if like me, you are wary of blends with that fermented Louisiana goo, fear not here, it really is barely detectible, if at all.

When I opened the tin I found some flakes not very uniform but well stacked, forming a mountain of pressed tobacco in a very similar way to a plug. The flake becomes ribbon very easily, in such a way that when rubbed it is so soft that it appears to be more humid than it actually is and can go directly from the tin to the pipe. In the pipe it becomes a very tasty tobacco, with a creamy smoke and an aroma and flavor of sweet hay, somewhat chocolatey. I'd say this tobacco could be made up of Hamborger Veermaster virginias with the addition of a bit of perique.

After testing it, I immediately made sure I had another tin of replacement.

Yet another twist on the virginia blend from the good guys at Dan Pipe.

The tin aroma is excellent treacle-like, almost buttery. The flakes, once unwelded from the mass, are quite moist and are medium brown shot through with dark threads, presumably the perique.

The first few puffs are disappointing and quite bland, but this disappears after 5 minutes or so and then the virginia slips through with a gentle touch of perique in the background. Takes a number of relights to get it going.

I do find some of these virginia/perique end up getting really rather nasty and peppery hot as the bowl diminshes, but this blend doesn't seem to do that as much as some I have tried. Returning to a half spent bowl is certainly not a good idea in any case. These German virginia/perique blends like this and Kriswill Navy cut require smoking in full, there an then.

This is one of the better blends of this type and as I always comment, a little cheaper and kinder than any english counter-parts. Not necessarily an all day smoke. I couldn't smoke this week in week out either but would certainly include this if you do daily rotation, like me.

An excellent addition to any cellar.

A very nice golden and brown coloured flake. The smell is sweet with a plumy or pruny note. There is just a small splash of perique in this tobacco to give the golden virginias a nice body. The taste is sweet and a hint of fruit. Very dense and creamy smoke. During the bowl the taste get´s sweeter and the perique starts to shine through at the end of the bowl. I suggest that there is a sweetener used. Nice light Allday Va/Per.

My first impressions of this blend are mixed. The positive first. The flakes were generous, and the snork was interesting. This baccy burned down evenly after a bit of a struggle on the light. The bad—the flakes on top of the stack were light colored and caked hard, so I picked a few from the bottom, which were darker colored, but easier to pluck. This change in coloration suggested to me that some additive had seeped to the bottom, discoloring the flakes. I presume this additive to be PG.

The tobacco was sharp, citrusy. I had to puff slow for it threatened to bite. The aftertaste was somewhat "tinny" and sharp, but the retro also had some pleasant aspects to it, a toasty palate, but definitely sharp. The tobacco had a peppery kick to it and the Nic hit grew stronger as the bowl progressed. I can see the comparison to Reiners LGF but this one's much rougher around the edges, no where near as pleasant to smoke as RLGF.

I will revisit this flake later in the year. For now, though, I'm somewhat disappointed with this one. Hamborger was more to my taste.

Keep on pipin'

I wanted to get a hold of this tobacco for some time now and luck has it that a fellow pipe smoker had some on hand. The smell off the tin is unmistakably of chocolate. This casing/topping doesn't translate as strongly in the smoke but can distract at times from the tobacco flavors.

Mostly nutty and hay tobacco and the Perique is hard to taste, unless the nutty/chocolate flavor wants to pass for "Perique".

Overall a decent Virginia but no more than that, sometimes the hype is justified but in this case it isn't. I was quite happy not having to spend my money on a full tin of this Danish Virginia flake style tobacco.

When opening the can we found a flake brimmed with gold and light brown. The smell has several citrus and fruit touches. The humidity is a little more than necessary. However it lights well and only occasional re-ignition is necessary. From the first moment the taste is sweet and spicy on the nose, the effect is delicious and is maintained until the end, the smoke is creamy and smooth. It is a tobacco of high quality and 100 per 100 recommended
