I ordered this as a sample. Dan Pipe sends most Flake-Tobacco samples as "sliced-Flakes". So I was pretty confused, when I saw the "Virginia Slices" are SLICES and not SLICED. Either way the tobacco looks really appetizing.

The tin aroma is fresh and sparkling. A tasty potpourri of fruit, citrusy hay and a slight hint of (milk-)chocolate, if you take a deep sniff.

As I got this as sliced Flakes, I enjoy smoking it that way and will slice the flake slices of the next tin, too. Handling is uncomplicated: Pack a bowl, light it - ENJOY! No worries here and the tobacco is just of right moisture level for my taste.

The taste isn't complex, yet honest and palatable in it's simplicity. No peaks to be found - but also no dull spots. The tobacco tastes excellent from the first lighting to the last crumbles of ash. The Virginias shine with a very fine taste of freshly mown grass and/or hay. A bit of citrus makes it fresh and sparkling.A slight piquant note in the back that's enhanced by the natural tanginess and tingling mouth-feel of the Perique. The Perique (which is more in the back, but deinetly noticeable!) adds a slight fruit note, that supplements the grassy, citrusy Virginias perfectly and create a ejoyable harmony in the taste. A restrained sweetness is always present and in perfect proportion to the spice of this blend.

Somehow me and a lot of other smokers can't help but notice the (milk-)chocolate taste that's lurking. Is it a casing? Is there Burley hiding in the mixture? It doensnt raelly matter, because either way I find it very pleasant and for me it adds that certain something. EDIT: Somehow it has lost it's "milk-chocolate-charme", I guess this was maybe coming from another blend produced in the same factory? Sadly this aroma is gone now, and leaves behing a tasteful - but average Va/Per, which is still enjoyable.

I'm pretty sure if there wasn't this chocolate-note in this blend, I'd give it 3/4 Stars and i would hesitate if I should by a tin of it (EDIT: See above...it lost this choco-note, so I'll downrate to 3/4 stars). But like this there's no doubts left - 4/4 stars for a unique, well-balanced and interesting blend. Definetly a All-Day-Smoke.

I bought my tin of this this past winter because somebody said they liked it, and since I love VP blends so much, my arm doesn't need to be twisted too hard.

Opening the tin revealed (very) thin flakes of mostly light color clumped together in the middle of a round tin. Such appears to be the future with new labeling laws in Europe. The round tins are superior for purpose of sealing, but the square/rectangular tins make for the best presentation for flakes.

These flakes were probably thinner than any I have ever seen. This made prep a breeze. Tearing was not even necessary. The moisture of the flakes was perfect upon opening and the tin aroma was wonderful. Sweet Virginia/dried fruits. Exactly how you would want a VP blend to smell. The tin note reminded me of Exhausted Rooster, but that is about the only thing these two blends share.

I would say this is on the light side of Virginia as it was pretty mild to my palate. The first half of the blend was really blah for me, but the second half was kind of nice. The sweetness really came forth and made for a nice finish. The perique in this blend is light. Almost Orlik Golden Sliced light. In fact this blend kind of reminded me of OGS, but I would have to say I prefer OGS to this one.

The side stream was nice, almost like baking bread. So this increased the pleasure to what was otherwise just a mediocre VP to my tastes. I am torn between 2 to 3 stars on this one. I smoke a lot of VP blends and this one won't be missed and may be, entirely forgotten, after a year or two. In fact, If someone asked me to recommend a VP from Dan, St. Bernard Flake would come to mind before this one, but this one is still not bad. I can't say I disliked it at all. I feel the positives outweigh the negatives enough to justify a third star, so I am rounding up.

A nice Virginia flake alternative . Very little , if any , topping . You need to be a little patient with this one . The slow smoker is rewarded with a subtle Virginia taste that is some what fruity . I aged a can for around 2 years and it really stepped up the flavor . Nice tin note that makes the flake lover want to smoke it . This , to me , is one of Dan's better offerings .

What a lovely blend. The flakes are semi-rubbed and very easy to handle. The perique is just right for me. The casing is gently sweet and tasty. Burns cool and dry. Nicotene is at an acceptable level. What else could you ask for. The German says that this blend makes him smile and I'm smiling to. This could be the one. Who knows. I'm a little disappointed that Eulenburg, my favorite reviewer, doesn't share my enthusiasm for this gem. But c'est la vie. This is heaven in a bowl to me. Lovely subtle chocolate taste.

A vaper for the rest of us. A high quality blend in all respects. Needs a little drying out of the tin. I'd classify this as a light aromatic. Rub it out for best results. Dan good!

Update: Maybe Eurenburg was right after all. The chocolate is starting to get to me. I'm lowering my rating to 3 stars.

This is a pretty straightforward smoke. Upon opening the tin you get the smell of fermented tobacco, a somewhat sweet, almost figish smell. The sweetness rapidly dissapates when the tobacco is taken out of the tin.

It's a flake, so the question of "to rub, or not to rub" arises. I decided to rub it out, which it does very easily. I then decided to pack it into my clay pipe, in order to get a rather pure taste of the blend.

Without question, this is a Virginia blend. It lit easily, and burned evenly all the way through the smoke.

The taste was not overwhelming, in fact it seemed barely there, but then again I love the latakia/perique blends, so this was not surprising. I expected it to smoke hot, but it really wasn't doing so, although I use the "breath method" of smoking, so it's entirely possible that, given a few good puffs, you might find yourself with a bit of a bite. As it was, I could get a small sting in my mouth, but not a real solid bite like I get with aromatics.

The strength was mild. I think smoking this all day would not be unfeasible. But it would be uninteresting.

You see, it's rather a one-note tobacco. There's supposed to be perique in this, I sure couldn't taste it. I certainly wouldn't describe the flavor as full, although there is no doubt that it puts out a fair amount of smoke. Call it medium, at best.

The aftertaste was fairly mild as well, and had none of the richness I'm used to.

So, I guess that, if you're not into nicely full-bodied blends, this is a winner. I'll probably smoke this on occasion, but it'll be on the lower end of the rotation schedule, as opposed to my latakia blends.

Yet another twist on the virginia blend from the good guys at Dan Pipe.

The tin aroma is excellent treacle-like, almost buttery. The flakes, once unwelded from the mass, are quite moist and are medium brown shot through with dark threads, presumably the perique.

The first few puffs are disappointing and quite bland, but this disappears after 5 minutes or so and then the virginia slips through with a gentle touch of perique in the background. Takes a number of relights to get it going.

I do find some of these virginia/perique end up getting really rather nasty and peppery hot as the bowl diminshes, but this blend doesn't seem to do that as much as some I have tried. Returning to a half spent bowl is certainly not a good idea in any case. These German virginia/perique blends like this and Kriswill Navy cut require smoking in full, there an then.

This is one of the better blends of this type and as I always comment, a little cheaper and kinder than any english counter-parts. Not necessarily an all day smoke. I couldn't smoke this week in week out either but would certainly include this if you do daily rotation, like me.

An excellent addition to any cellar.

A very nice golden and brown coloured flake. The smell is sweet with a plumy or pruny note. There is just a small splash of perique in this tobacco to give the golden virginias a nice body. The taste is sweet and a hint of fruit. Very dense and creamy smoke. During the bowl the taste get´s sweeter and the perique starts to shine through at the end of the bowl. I suggest that there is a sweetener used. Nice light Allday Va/Per.

Not bad! I like the look of the tin more than I actually liked the tobacco. But it is a nice Virginia Flake with a pleasantly sweet top note. Not one I'd stock up on, but I will definitely finish the tin I have and enjoy doing so. One of the mildest Virginias I've ever smoked.

Very enjoyable smoke.. Light virginia but with very nice nutty and restrained hay notes. I found this to be a smoke with not much at all to complain about. Lovers of stronger Gawith flakes might be slightly dissapointed.. I find it like a more restrained flake version of old gowrie with a tiny perique added.. I do think the perique contributes to the nutty flavor although I might be mistaken.. nice smooth smoking flake.
