W.O. Larsen Old Fashioned

(2.64)
A blend of Virginia and burley leaf that has been selected from the best tobacco fields in the world. No effort has been spared as one part of the blend has been pressed into cakes and aged, while the other part is finished in different cuts. Finally the different parts are blended and top flavored by hand.

I've smoked several bowls of this tobacco, all in different pipes, in the last couple of days. Caramel, coffee and butterscotch layered smoothly - not sprayed over - an expert blending of a fine selection of Virginia leaf and of burley. Join the church of Larsen's Old Fashioned. To me, this aromatic stoved caramel and butterscotch pastry of a blend (or is it that the finest brewed Viennese coffee that I'm getting?) is an addictive and wondrously pleasant smoke. It tastes to me just like it smells in the bag. What's not to love: easy to pack, smoke flows freely, burns well, etc. No bite, although a bit warm, which is probably due to the taste stimulating more frequent puffing on my part. But you have to train yourself to smoke it slow, as it should be. It also benefits from some drying out time. I started in a "testing cob" and then in a meer. This rich, luxurious blend deserves a large bowled pipe. Let it be known that I do not like heavily cased aromatics. The aromatics that I do like are very few (McB's Navy Flake for one). OF has just become one of those few. YMMV.

I think I have found the one weed I can't live without. I can smoke it all day and still crave for the taste of another bowl. Of course it would be an expensive tobacco and not available in bulk.......what to do.....what to do? Any type of review form me will certainly be biased. To me it's that good. For me, the thing about this weed is the buttery/caramel taste and effect that I get from it. It's almost like I have eaten a very fine dessert, but it is not really sweet. More what I'd call full tobacco flavor. Old Fashioned just gives me the feeling of satisfaction and that something really good happened to my pallet. I have noticed this to a much lesser extent in a few other tobaccos just not to this degree. W.O. Larsen Old Fashioned is obviously a very high quality weed. I get a fine tobacco taste, a wonderful oral sensation and a satisfaction from it that I have found nowhere else. I don't know what it is that oozes through the smoke the last half of a bowl but it's the Holy Grail for me. It has taken me only a little over a week to smoke nearly all of a 100g tin of this manna. I'll be out before any more can arrive. I hate going through withdrawal, it's going to be spiders everywhere in a few days.

The nic level must not be too high due to the fact I don't feel "over smoked" after repeated bowls, no prickly mouth or floppy brain. Well no more floppy than normal for me. Remember I said that I was biased in regards to this blend so keep that in mind should you undertake this adventure. I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I do. I don't think you will feel that it is money wasted even if you don't get the E ticket ride that I enjoy.

What an aromatic ? it seems that this genre of tobacco doesn't get much better than this! Its aroma and its flavour, although full, are never overwhelming and never show a "darker side" of cheap artificial additives, like so many others do. Its taste is very much its own ? somewhere in between Earl Grey tea and very sweet Virginia tobacco. Room note harmless for non-smokers, delicious for smokers!

The only fault I find with it is truly irrelevant: the beautiful tin that holds it is not airtight...

I have to admit, like alot of Larsen tobaccos they all have a unique character. The Old Fashioned has a smooth blend of Virginias and Burleys which give a pleasant taste and nicely filling. The topping is a hint of chocolate with a taste of a richly buttered poundcake which accomodates a pleasant smoking experience, pure heaven as an aromatic..it's a shame it's not made anymore,my only gripe is that the tobacco isn't long burning, but who knows maybe it's me just savoring the flavor a little too quickly:)

The tin aroma is gently sweet, with coffee and creamy chocolate notes. Some times I pick up on a discrete fruity undertone. Certainly an appealing impression. The tin aroma does indeed promise a savoury smoke, and true enough, the tin description is right - this is a mellow and pleasant tobacco. Very smooth and well balanced, even if it's the burley that is the main player rather than the cavendish and va (which plays a minor role in the composition).

I usually find myself smoking this while reading. It's very low maintenance and with excellent burning properties, which allows me to focus more on the book than the smoke. It seems to benefit from a larger bowled pipe and a little tighter packing. Further more, it's incredibly easy on both tongue and palate. The room note is very pleasant and relaxing.

I do have a couple of gripes with it, however. There is a licorice taste to it which I'm not always agreeing with, and I wouldn't have minded a little more body and nicotine punch. But all in all, it's a pretty nice aromatic that isn't too sweet. Its mildness and lack of texture keeps me from awarding too many stars, however. Although it is pleasant and fairly tasty, there simply isn't enough here to more than briefly pique my interest.

But people looking for a mild all-day aromatic might find what they need here.

Long story short: I just tried a bowlfull late at night and I am hooked. I agree that this is the perfect one for an after dinner puff. The heavier the dinner the better!!!!

I promise to comment again after a few bowls - or after I finish the tin. (Which might take some time: "Ultimate Luxury", as the blend series title goes, perfectly describes it. Hence one should indulge sparingly - just out of reverence for the high quality!)

I get this tobacco recently. I smoke aromatics mostly, but I really like this one. It have some coffee/chocolaty flavoring with sweet taste. Sometimes you get your tongue bitten, but only if you puff to quickly:) I didnt try pure Virginia yet, (I am new piper:)) but I guess that I can tell Virginia in this one:)

Very pleasing tobacco.

I won’t say this is a bad pipe tobacco because it’s very smokable especially for a smoker that likes flavored tobacco. It has a caramel- toffee flavoring that’s just a tad bit much for me, though would be great for anyone looking for that. The flavoring buries what would be a nice, grassy, tart Virginian with a nuttier, smoky burly, but besides that , I see nothing bad about this except a little tingle on the tongue. It’s a pretty good value compared to most of the high priced blends that I usually smoke, and I’m not upset for buying it as it’s mild enough for all day and it won’t go to waste. You can’t hit a home run on every tin. My girlfriend likes the room note , so there’s another plus as she doesn’t appreciate the aroma of most of my regulars like VapPers and the like. I give it a 2.5 on taste and a 3 on quality so give it try .

I bought 3 of W. O. Larsons blends around Christmas time in 2019 that were on sale. I opened the 1864 Perfect Mixture back then and just opened the Old Fashioned some 4 years later. I have the Signature that I may open on Christmas Eve. I opened the tin and was greeted with a mild sweet note that I am not really sure what it is. The back of my tin says the aroma is of maple and chocolate. Maybe that is it. In honesty I have only smoked about 4 bowls but unfortunately for me that is enough. I am not sure if some of the taste evaporated after 4 years or it is just a mellow tasting blend. I just couldn’t get much taste out of it and it is a biter and left my mouth and the back of my throat telling me that this blend is not agreeable. Somewhat like a few Mac Baren blends that I have tried and are known for their bite. I didn’t find it a scorcher but I just can’t see putting my mouth through this ordeal and trying to smoke 100 grams of this stuff and not having a pleasant experience. It is resting comfortably in a jar and will wind up no doubt in my estate sale. Even from my brief experience smoking this I cannot recommend it but I am sure there are others who love the stuff.
