W.O. Larsen Old Fashioned

(2.64)
A blend of Virginia and burley leaf that has been selected from the best tobacco fields in the world. No effort has been spared as one part of the blend has been pressed into cakes and aged, while the other part is finished in different cuts. Finally the different parts are blended and top flavored by hand.

This stuff has a fantastic fragrance of caramel and butterscotch in the tin. It tastes like a mixture of Virginia and Burley (which it is) with very subtle topping or casing. My wife didn't object to the room note but her approval can be a mixed blessing (normally, the mixtures she likes me to smoke taste like incense smells.) It's mild and behaves very well so it makes a nice relaxing smoke if you are in the mood for an aromatic mixture with a delicate flavor.

This is very representative of the Danish style of aromatic. It is a fat free no calorie dessert tasting of caramel and nuts...

This will make some say "yum", while others will run!

I found it pleasant, but only after messing a bit with it. Here are my tips for this blend:

1. Dry it out a bit. Only experience will teach the proper level for your taste. 2. Be careful packing it. A loose pack will indeed make it burn hot. It is more casing forward to my tastes than it is tobacco forward, and that will make it only a once in a while treat for me.

But it is a good blend, and I would think the fan of well flavored tobaccoes would enjoy it immensely.

Off an old Yale Mixture jar: "May your troubles end in smoke."

It's almost Christmas and to a lot co smokers that means aromatic tobacco °as for me..so far every Larsen's blend i tried hasn't disappointed me as i consider these blends typical good quality danish style tobaccos.I opened a 100 gram tin and the first smell that came out was wonderfull.a nice combination of caramel notes, nuts, sweet whiskey came out and smelled very natural and pleasing.the blend's moisture is perfect, lights easy and several relights are needed through the smoking process.while smoking the flavours are natural and the topping with the tobacco flavours combine well.the virginias are mostly grassy and citrusy mostly, with some bread notes popping up rare.the burleys are in the backround being nutty and sweet.the topping is more tense than the tobaccos most of the times without feeling chemical or boring.burns medium hot to perfect ash with a very pleasant room note.the nicotine level is almost medium and some moisture is being created while burning.the aftertaste is a bit tense.as for the big complains of a lot co smokers for the tongue bite.yes there is some tongue bite if smoked fast in a pipe without filter.it happened to me as well.i smoked it in a 9mm filtered pipe slow and no tongue bite appeared.the flavours came out nicer and i enjoyed it more.in conclusion this is a nice aromatic typical danist style blend that can be an all day smoke and insert you to a nice mood!

This is a maddening tobacco. Like most people have already said this is one of tobacco that seems it should be great, but the bite is unbearable. I tried this in several briars before I gave up and put it in storage (in a mason jar) hoping that age would mellow it. I just came back to it because I realized I never tried it in a recently purchased corncob (I've never owned one before and thought I should at least give one a try). With other tobaccos I felt the corncob took "something" away from some of my tobaccos (mostly English blends) so I was hoping that it may also take away the bite from this tobacco. Amazingly, the corncob did exactly that. Now a tobacco I found unbearable has become very pleasant! The first half of the bowl tasted just like it smelled - that butterscotch aroma. I would have given this a 1-star in any briar, but in my $10 Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman it gets a 3-star rating. This is, possibly, the only tobacco I'll use in it.

When packed properly, this can deliver a decently flavorful smoke without bite. It leaves an alright room note, though maybe a little strong to the non-smoker. Honestly I feel the casing is not overpowering and the quality tobaccos come through. It is a little stronger than other lighter aromatics with the nic hit so it's not my favorite, though good for a heartier smoke. Probably won't get any more of this one since my wife bitches about the room note and it's a little stronger than I want. I will recommend it to those who want this type of strength, but ding it one star for the room note that I feel could be better.

I enjoyed this. It is a very tasty and classy aromatic. It is very Danish in nature in that the virginia leads the way with the burley in more a minor role and it will nip you good if you push it.

The aroma I get from this is nuts and caramel. Somehow snickers came to mind while I smoked it. Three solid stars for this.

Very pleasent taste, smooth and great room note. Extemely good for beginners and for soft taste lovers. Some kickback in end of the bowl. Low nicotine rate. Strong enough for heavy users.

I'm a bit confused by some of the previous reviews. This is far from an English. There isn't any Balkan, oriental, or latakia. And this is certainly far from any cigarette tobacco! Ignorant Rubbish! This is simply well-aged Virginia/Burley cut into beautiful ribbons, with a truly sublime creamy topping. This is one of the few aromatics that taste as creamy as they smell. I agree with one reviewer that the smell reminds me of butterscotch.

I will say this, however: I compared Larson Old Fashioned with Captain Black Gold and found that CBG was not only a bit tastier, but cheaper by the ounce.

A nice, buttery caramel flavor! This is one of the 3 or 4 finest "true" aromatics I've ever smoked. I let it dry out to the point where I felt no moisture at all in the tobacco. That did tend to make it burn a little hotter than straight from the tin but that is how it performed at its best. Too wet, and the tobacco became steamy and the pipe gurgled. Dried out, this smoked almost like a straight virginia with just a hint of that caramel taste.

As others have mentioned, once you become enchanted with unflavored tobaccos, it's hard to spend a lot of time with aromatics, even one as well developed as this one. This one, as good as it is, still strives more towards the flavor of caramel than the flavor of tobacco (indeed, my definition of true aromatic is a tobacco that tastes more like its flavoring than like tobacco). However, this is one that is reasonably satisfying and can serve well as a special occasion or "dessert" tobacco... something for those times you just crave something extra-sweet! If you like aromatics, you cannot afford to pass this one by.

Old Fashion mixture is an excellent example of a Danish Aromatic. Quality grassy Virginia and nutty Burley topped with Caramel and some hints of nuts and butterscotch. This combination puts me in mind of good English Toffee. The topping is there but gives just enough sweetness to enhance the tobaccos, and that is pleasing, to say the least. I am reviewing the blend that has been sealed in a mason jar for over two years. That has improved the overall experience for me. When I first popped the new tin I was not a fan of the smoke. Was kind of damp and was a younger torcher. It has now mellowed into a very good smoke. Packing this fairly tight and slow smoking has enhanced the overall appeal immensely. Can be an all day smoke, and has been for me now a couple of days. Overall a 3 for me. Mild, tasty and fragrant.
