Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) Troost Slices

(3.48)
A Continental flake employing the use of lighter bodied flue cured Virginias and aromatic burley leaf. A small element of Tanzanian fired leaf is added to round off the smooth, subtle aroma. Processed to produce a firm flake, this blend is mild yet cool with the continental taste and aroma associated with Dutch style blends.
Notes: Originally a Dutch tobacco made by Van Rossems, Troost Slices is now produced by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.

Dear All, I just add my two cents, my review being based on a 100gr tin coming from Amsterdam. Troost Slices are basical a good baccy, produced by Orlik/Scandinavian , and belonging to the not-so-large family of the European Regulars, I mean VaB blends with mild flavouring. The one including Amphora Brown, just to name the probably widely known. I consider them closely related to the Golden Sliced and the Park Lane #7, placing it right in the middle of those, being the first more Virginia oriented, the latter more on the Burley side. Flavour is mildly honey on bread, and strength mild-to-medium. Just like every VaB flake they need a bit of attention to keep the smoke cool and avoid bite, and let the mild aromas developing nicely. Burns absolutely dry. A small proportion of Toscano cigar crushed and mixed with a rubbed flake produce an exhilarating smoke, the nice sweet aroma of the Slices being consistently enhanced, and some “meat” is added. Merry Christmas to All the TR Community !

With the heavy casing lingering in the nose it's impossible to say anything about the actual ingredients, i.e. the tobaccos used to create these neat uniform slices. The presentation in the tin is as festive as it gets. Apart from the artificial flavor it tastes like any plain ryo tobacco. Not what I seek in the smoking experience.

As I live in the Netherlands I can buy this stuff on every street corner. It's cheap, available, nice to smoke...and still I don't buy it often. Troost seems to have it's own character and flavour, which I find refreshing. A lot of the aromatics seems to taste alike but this is different.

If you're new to flakes, this might well be the best start because it's the easiest burning flake I have tried. It's easy to light and a smooth smoke, not to high on nicotine either.

It's just too "normal" over here and I tend to go for the more exclusive brands, just because trying new tobaccos is half the fun!

This review is based on one pipeful, so take it with a grain of salt. I got a slice of this--from a tin, not a pouch--from a Dutch guy I met in a baccy shop. I traded him for a slice of IRC slices. I got the better deal.

I'm not usually an aromatic smoker, but this may well change me, or would if it were more readily available. It rubs out with ease and burns very well, if a little wet. It can bite if smoked too fast, and in any case the flavor is better if you can smoke it as slowly as possible. I'd suggest you smoke it in smaller pipes, as it seemed to get a bit tiring toward the end when I smoked it in a larger pipe.

This is definitely flavored, but I can't tell what it is flavored with, which is a good thing. Nutty burley flavors are the most noticable, with subtle notes of sweet spices. It smells wonderful, like baking cinnamon scones.

Overall, the best aromatic I have tried. If you can get some, you won't go wrong.

Yesterday, I was relaxing in the backyard with a bowl Of Larry's Blend, thinking about great pipe tobaccos.

Troost Slices were my all-time favorite. Whatever the secret ingredients were in Van Rossem's recipe, I've yet to try anything close to it.

Long after the original Troost Slices became unavailable stateside, to my surprise, I spotted a few 5 packs at a local Tinderbox. They turned out to be harsh, bad impersonations of the original masterpiece, not even a ghost of the former blend.

Reading this thread, I wonder if these cheap imitations are what some of our esteemed colleagues tasted? I find it hard to believe that any serious piper could hate the original Troost Slices.

If there is a Heaven for pipesmokers, perhaps we'll smoke TS again. :^)

An interesting and flavorful tobacco, Troost Slices is almost like a richer version of Dunhill Light Flake. A little sweet for my tastes, but thoroughly enjoyable in its creamy smoothness. For me, it's not worth the fuss of getting it sent from Europe but if you are a VA flake fan who can easily obtain it, I recommend it as a change of pace from the brisker English style flakes.

hehe I'VE got a source! A GLP-deprived piper in the Netherlands with whom I swap to get this wonderful stuff. Why Troost markets their other crap here but not this is a mystery.

I disagree with the top description; my perfectly presented flakes are not broken. I do concur whole heartedly with most of the previous reviewers on the taste and smoking characterisics, especially the observation that it needs a few minutes to really blossom. I suppose its most recognizable comparison would be to MacBaren's Navy Flakes, although Troost lacks their characteristic MB honey taste. The sweetness here is more virginia and clovery. I keep trying to discern burley, but cannot. Excellent morning smoke, particularly for spring walks by the river. It goes well with coffee. It improves attitude.

I'm told this is an inexpensive tobacco, so my dutch comrade is likely getting a bargain with his now defunct Mephisto in trade. I don't care, this would become a standard for me if it could. Thanks, Martin!

This is a real all-day smoke. It is not expensive, it is half the cost of the most English tabacco's.

This tobacco did very little for me,the tin aroma was rather sweet and quite pleasent but after lighting up i found it to be a little dull and flat.It did burn my mouth a bit but not to excess. The price was right but that would not be enough to make me smoke it on a regulr basis.

The dutch are famous for their frugality. This stuff is half the price of other up-market brands in Holland, and almost as good.

Needs to dry out a little, tasty cookie, sweet bread taste, not overpowering though, nice and mild, but not too mild. For once something the dutch make well and at a great price...a rare thing indeed.
