Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) Troost Slices
(3.48)
A Continental flake employing the use of lighter bodied flue cured Virginias and aromatic burley leaf. A small element of Tanzanian fired leaf is added to round off the smooth, subtle aroma. Processed to produce a firm flake, this blend is mild yet cool with the continental taste and aroma associated with Dutch style blends.
Notes: Originally a Dutch tobacco made by Van Rossems, Troost Slices is now produced by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.

Sadly, this rich, heavenly flake is no longer exported to this country, otherwise it would definitely be one of my regulars. I?ve searched for it on the Web and in the online tobacco stores of Holland, but to no avail. I e-mailed one Amsterdam shop to inquire whether this could be shipped to the U.S., but never received a response. Perhaps on a future trip to the Netherlands I will most certainly buy a dozen tins. It would almost be worth the trip for the tobacco alone.
A friend of mine found a can from about 15 years ago lying around his apartment. Yes, this stuff is wonderful, the stuff tobacco dreams are made of. It?s the finest aromatic flake I have ever smoked, and one of the best tobaccos, period. The tin aroma is boozy, almost dizzying in its richness. The room note is to die for. My car smelled like fresh baked spice bread for about an hour after it was smoked. Even for a person who doesn?t particularly like aromatics, I could not help but be awed by Troost. Even if they continue to manufacture this blend, I wonder if it is as good as this old can.
This is some sort of light and dark Virginia flake with a powerful but balanced casing. It smokes cool, unlike most flakes, which can render the tongue raw. Stokkebye flake is about as close as you can get with regard to richness, color and aroma, but because it smokes hot, it doesn?t come even close to Troost. Dunhill?s Light Flake is also first rate sliced Virginia, but again, falls short of Slices. The tin art is a bit on the weird side, I must say: an amused guy taunting a prisoner locked in a pillory. Sort of reminds me of an average day on the job.
Should you ever stumble upon this winner, you must give it a try. If anyone knows where this stuff can be had could you please write me at [email protected]. I would greatly appreciate it.

Instantly fell in love with this blend. It does have a little topping from what I've been told, but the result is subtle sweetness and a very smooth smoke. Very nice tobacco that can easily be smoked without distracting from other tasks, or focused and entertained by the subtle nuances in the flavor. Hard to beleive that a blend like this is only found in Holland

This tobacco has really abducted me. I find it perfect. The taste is definitely comparable to a natural Virginia/Cavendish blend, with no "aromatic effect" in the mouth. The room note is delicately suggesting a chocolate flavor mixed to a typical virginia smoke.

To me this tobacco represents all the good stuff my country (the Netherlands) has to offer.
Sadly, the traditional 100gr tin with slices of ideal size and weigth, has been discontinued and replaced with 50gr tins the same size as for example Univeristy Flake.
This is a tobacco for 'anyday, anytime', it's always good. There are tobacco's I consider more luxurious, like a gourmet meal, but this one is like 'our daily bread' to me.

A highly recommended tobacco.
If there's one tobacco left in this world, let it be Troost Slices.

I was told that Troost means comfort in Dutch, and the laughing burgher is offering some comfort to the poor wretch in the pillory.
Slices is the best tobacco in the Dutch style that I have smoked and it is a pity that it is not more widely available. It can hold its own against the likes of Marlin Flake, Full Virginia Flake or Stonehaven. It is also an education for those who might be inclined to sneer at aromatics on principle. A delight not only for the smoker, but also for those around.

TROOST SLICES 20-01-05. Over the year's I have read and heard nothing but praise for Troost Slices. Now that I've had the taste experience myself I'm singing along with the positive, reviewer's. "Excellent Tobacco" I was lucky enough to look in the window of an old second hand shop, placed beside a very old pipe was a tin of Troost Slices. How old this tin is I have no idea, the tin is obviously rather old and in great condition on the inside. The slices were in near perfect condition, not to moist and definitely not dried out, lucky for me! Troost slices has provided me with one of the best pipe smoking experience's of my life from first light right through to bowl's end.Not only "delicious" but absolutely perfect in various way's without bite! Deliciously smooth bowl after bowl! "Now here's the catch" I've tried to find more, but no luck so far. (PLEASE)If anyone know's where it's being produced or,where I can purchase more "PLEASE LET ME KNOW" 10+ out of 10+

I am just beginning what I hope will be a long and happy association with this tobacco. So far, I have been extremely pleased with it. This tobacco is a fairly conventional-looking flake which is sold in sealed pouches. It is described as containing cavendish, but it is not "cavendish" in the sense understood by most smokers, e.g., flavored black cavendish. Indeed, Troost Slices smokes like a virginia flake with its pure, complex tobacco flavor. I detect an added top note -slightly sweet- but it is very subtle indeed. The tobacco lights very easily without having to be rubbed out and provides a mellow, bite-free smoke all the way down. T.S. are strong enough nicotine-wise for the seasoned smoker, but would not overwhelm the novice. Overall, I would call this a very high quality flake and would recommend it without reservation.

Excellent, good,a wonderful surprize in taste, smooth, yum. Ok,ok this tobacco is not good at all, its superb!!! I always thought Troost slices might be a lesser Dutch sweet sticky hot burning furnace. I've found out I shouldn't judge the tobacco because of where it's from. The slices are light to medium brown in color. They rub out and pack well, and the smell out of the package is of chocolate, and I believe someone said it smelled like butter pie. I would have to agree with that.It does have a buttery Virginia freshness, and also smells of fine Burley tobaccos. The smoke is lightly sweet, but good natural creamy tobacco flavour with a good ammount of nicotene. The topping is ever so light and is a great marriage with the tobacco. Of all my reviews, this is my everyday favorite pipe tobacco. If you haven't tried this, please do so, you will not be sorry.

OK, based on the reviews here I picked up two pouches of Troost Slices - while showing a new (to me) Brackner Axe to the master blender in my preferred tobacco store...while he shared a blend of 24 year old tobacco he had hidden away. Oh my!
At first I thought the price marked on the Troost was a mistake...but this is just a very well-priced confection. And confection is it! While not an aromatic to my mind it does give a hint of that amazing aroma of the Karmelkorn store in the mall (from when I was a kid) in terms of its flavor profile. But to that lovely aroma/taste hint add a nutty quality (Burley perhaps) and surprising smoothness and you'll have a window on this fantastic tobacco. I tried a DGT (bad idea) and do not recommend it. My pipe seems to prefer a rough crumble of the slice with a well rubbed topping for the light...pretty much the way I smoke most flakes.
If you like those flakes that are "flavored" just a bit so that the flavoring brings out the best in the tobacco (Bob's Chocolate as one example)...this is in that ilk IMO...and highly recommended.
