Seattle Pipe Club Give Me Liberty

(3.00)
“Give me Liberty or Give me Death” Founding Father Patrick Henry’s powerful speech in 1775 helped ignite the War for Independence. His cry for Liberty still rings true. Tobacco farming was at the heart of Early America. This special blend is predominantly Old Belt Red Virginias from North Carolina combined with some lightly stoved Virginia from Brazil. Old Belt is the nation’s oldest tobacco market. Tobacco is aged and pressed into an easy to use plug. The result is a beautiful mahogany colored Virginia for a smooth and zesty all day smoke.

The old belt North Carolina red Virginias and stoved, fermented Brazilian Virginia provide a lot of tart and zesty citrus, tangy dried dark fruit, vegetative grass, bread, floralness, some tartly sour lemon, sugar, earth, wood, mild spice, acidity, light vinegar, and a small hint of smoke. The strength and taste levels are a step past the medium mark. The nic-hit is almost medium. It won’t bite or get harsh. Has a few small rough edges which is typical of untopped straight Virginias. The easily broken apart crumble cake is a little moist, and as per my custom, I did not dry it. Your mileage may vary on this point. Burns cool, clean and slow with a mostly consistent sweet, fruity, floral, mildly sour and spicy, tingly acidic, piquant, deeply rich flavor that extends to the pleasantly lingering after taste. The room note is a notch stronger. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires some relights if not dried. Not an all day smoke, but it is repeatable. Should age well. Three stars.

The fresh tin note is quite pungent. Lots of tartness and grassiness. Once the crumble cake is broken apart and let to rest for a bit the smell becomes more grass and hay like with a touch of natural sweetness. I let mine dry out for 10 minutes before packing my bowl, The smoke is very rich in flavors and somewhat smooth for a straight Virginia. Lots of tart citrus, grass, hay flavors with natural sweetness from the un-toped stoved fermented Virginia's. This is a much smoother smoke than expected. No bite even if puffed hard. Nic hit is medium. you might need a pipe cleaner at the 1/2 way point as the tobacco is moist. This will age well.

I’ve been really loving Seattle Pipe Club recently, so this signature series is a nice bonus for me. Straight Virginias from SPC? Why not? Right from the tin note I was pleasantly surprised. Hogshead, though a few have like it, I found it to be boring and tasteless after the first minute of smoking. But the tin note on GML provided me with a bit of that SPC tanginess I’ve fallen in love with. This Virginia is flavorful on the palate as well! Hooray! A sweet floral-grassiness, dried fruit, and even the aforementioned tanginess comes through. Another great Tobacco from SPC.
