Perique. Fragrant, spicy, flavorful… Perique.

I normally spend about ten days or so to get into a blend. That seems to be how long it takes for me to experience the contents of a particular tin across different pipes, at different times of the day, etc.

I finished this tin of Windjammer in six days.

I just kept reaching for it, and enjoying it.

Based on the tin description and the reviews I have read, I was expecting a smell of rum upon opening this tin. But, I got red wine (vinegar) and fermented dark fruit instead. If the tin note had a color, it would be deep, dark, rich red, like maroon, with a hint of burgundy. Mr. Pease was generous with the Perique in making this blend. You’ll know it as soon as you open the tin. The fragrant Perique combines with the added rum topping to produce a wine-like scent; savory and inviting.

The broken flake may not offer the packing options of a true flake, but this tobacco was easily pinchable into a wad suitable for rolling and stuffing into any size bowl. The tobacco readily accepted a flame, and so began a journey; as this blend seemed to take on different characters as I smoked my way through each bowl. Windjammer is one of the gifts that keep on giving, with a flavorful, savory start and a sweet finish. This blend had enough character and complexity to hold my interest until the very end.

The nic hit was noticeable, but never uncomfortable. I did not have to look hard to find the telltale signs of the Virginias with their sweet, grassy and bready notes. The supporting burley brought nutty and earthy to the mix, but was never center-stage. And always, there was the Perique; that interesting Perique that you find in C&D and G.L. Pease blends. This is rich and deep, dark and fruity. The liberal portion of Perique was very enjoyable, and very memorable. It will make itself known at first light. It will make itself known on retrohale. It will remain a consistent spicy element all the way to the bottom of the bowl. If you like Virginia with your Perique, this is the tin for you.

The aftertaste had that sweet lingering note easily recognizable as Virginia. I commonly chose to pair this blend with cold water or a weak iced tea; opting for a neutral drink to allow the full flavor of this tobacco to linger as long as possible. The tin I purchased had eighteen months of age on it when it arrived. And I did not delay its opening. Although a few years in the cellar may bring this blend to the level of sublime, I found it to be very flavorful and rewarding, even when young.

3.5 out of 4.

Tobacco smells like a whisky bottle stopper. After lighting, the first part of the first to feel is a strong wine, and the wine is together with the fragrance of flowers and fruit, background board has a little light nut flavor, P grass stimulation has but is very reasonable, very comfortable nose. It was a good feeling, but it was broken by the rising sweetness. It was too high and greasy, which made people need to drink water to resist the thirst caused by sweet. Although the sweetness of the middle section decreased, it still maintained a high level, the wine quality of the nose was still in the middle, and the main flavor was the aroma of toast. A good work is unfortunately ruined by the sweetness of the past. After the extraction, there is also a clear residual sweet taste in the mouth.

Another thoughtful offering from master blender Greg Pease, Windjammer (tin dated 01-26-21) is likely to please experienced camp followers, along with other careful smokers to whom the listed ingredients sound good. The addition of dark rum is judicious rather than cloying, and C&D’s proprietary black Cavendish is more like deep, twice-fermented Burley than the glop found in many aros. Tin note is rummy, for sure, but some drying is required to get the most from Windjammer, preferably via rest, and by then the rum is a faint, sweet, fruity enhancement to the fine selection of premium tobaccos. VAs in the tin are bready and yeasty air-cured and stoved reds, with a nice balance from flue cured brights that add meadow grasses and sparkle, and smooth figs, dates and baking and dessert spices from the Perique, with some soft earth and faint cocoa from the Burleys. Dried W handles, loads, lights and burns down very well, leaving only a little dark ash and enough soot to require a couple of pipe cleaners in the early going. Combusted scents are a woodier, more resin-y iteration of the tin notes, and the combusting tastes add walnuts. I suppose from the bitterness that both white and darker Burleys are included. For me, the best of this blend is in the light snork, which includes faint vanilla after some rest. I find it easy to puff away here, which pushes the strength (and the nicotine) from medium toward strong, and the tastes become full that way. Room note is just a little too strong to be pleasant to others. Aftertaste is an extension of the best-of-the smoke, only it’s a good deal sweeter.

I might have preferred more low notes in this blend. As is, most of the action is from the mid band, up. A month’s rest makes it more smoke-able and it also smooths and softens it somewhat. I’m pretty sure the ticket here is sealed tin aging, but I didn’t do that. 3 stars, almost 4, as I have smoked it.

Presentation: The tin art for this was a great choice and by far a really great name. Broken flake. Came a bit moist but I didn't dry it out at all. Bright leaf with some darker specks in between.

Palette: Someone had mentioned Fig Newtons and they are spot on. I can't put it any other way. I will forever come to know this as that smell and nothing else. Initial light up I was met with a lovely burley flavor and the toasted cavendish really comes through. Both are great compliments to eachother with flavors of roasted nuts, oatmeal, a touch of wood, brown sugar and very mild chocolate. The rum topping is more noticeable in the first few minutes but tapers off slightly towards mid bowl and just a slight hint if you search for it at the end. The perique comes in through the retrohale mostly, and offers a little bit of strength in flavor. Towards the midbowl the VA's start coming in with the sweetness and along with what is left of the rum topping and creates a cinnamon raisin bread like flavor. Very flavorful. The strength doesn't increase as the bowl progresses but is still a complex blend. There are many flavors to pick out with this one without being over the top. Sweet roomnote.

Performance: Burns at a decent pace. I find that I should have let it dry a bit, considering the tin age of only 1.5 months. Nicotine is mild. I could do two in a row. Requires more than my average relights but that may have been due to the moisture. No bite. Not an ADS but I could see this being smoked at intervals throughout the day.

Conclusion: A really nice treat from GLPease. As mentioned across the internet, this is a great blend for those who enjoy Haddo's Delight, and it's truly on point. This, to me, is Haddo's Delight Light. It's everything I wanted in Haddo's without having to wait a year for it to mellow out. The flavors are a little different, but the component leaf is the same as well as the topping. HD is more dark, spicy and earthy while WindJammer is nutty and sweet. I prefer this over Haddo's by a longshot in terms of flavor, cut and strength. I have 3 tins in the cellar that will only get better with age. Well done Greg.

This came as a very broken flake, which at least allows easy folding/stuffing, burning just on the hot and faster side (perhaps also an effect of the Cavendish). The tobacco flavor seems mostly based on the Red Va's reinforced by the Perique and other Virginias. The burley notes were faint in the first part of the bowl and largely absent thereafter. The rum isn't overdone but present throughout and the flavors integrate pretty well. A trifle damp even for me, it still takes a light easily.

Windjammer

Blend notes:”Windjammer combines naturally sweet, ripe Virginias, nutty burleys, toasted black cavendish, and a generous measure of perique, married together with a splash of dark rum.”

The Virginias support Windjammer’s structure with provide citrus, grass, sugar, and tangy dark fruit. In among these taste profiles you also get a hint of mildly acidic lemon.

The spicy, plum-esque sweet perique tastes of raisin or figs.

The burley offers a nutty, woodsy background element. The toasted (likely unsweetened) u
black cavendish adds a creaminess as a condiment.

The rum casing seems to bring a synthesis to the whole experience.

Windjammer is a lighter version of Haddo’s Delight (which I adore). It’s a less pure experience than the always excellent Escudo but then this is a VaPerBur blend with unsweetened black Cav. It’s milder and not as tasty as Viprati and milder than, say, Penny Farthing.

Windjammer would be a terrific entry level VaPer but not in a classic just Virginia and just Perique form.

3 out of 4 stars.

For some reason, whenever I pop the lid on my jar of Windjammer, the first whiff reminds me of caramel apples. And that flavor really carries over for me into the smoke, which makes it perfect for Autumn. It is a hearty and robust smoke with plenty of sweetness, fruitiness and some nice hints of peppery notes from the perique. As I get further into the bowl, I get some prominent rummy flavors as well. I have a feeling this will age beautifully. It does require a few relights but that's probably my own fault - I'm too captivated by the jar note to wait for it to dry out before loading my pipe.

If you haven't popped a tin of this yet don't make the same mistake I did.. put it back in the cellar and let it sit there for at least a year.. It is a very good blend.. but.. for all those familiar with pease/cornell and diehl blends.. you know what I mean.. time is gonna iron out the youthfulness of the leaf and you just know it is gonna be that much better.. Nevertheless, this stuff is quite tasty.. If you like a rum raisin profile.. maybe with quite a bit of spice and nuts.. I think this one may please you.. im gonna throw out a guess.. Maybe 20 percent perique.. I may be way off.. but the perique really stands out especially in the first half of the smoke.. it is wonderful.. the burley makes itself know too.. the rum is also a major component.. that aspect reminds me quite a bit of Navigator..it blends really well especially bringing out the nuttiness and accenting the sweetness of the virginia and the spice of the perique.. the virginia is nice and fruity but a little fresh.. it is gonna grow over time for sure.. the cavendish is a nice touch and luckily not too influential.. just kinda ties it all together.. I really enjoy this one.. it does like to burn a bit hot.. I would recommend some dry time.. it is a full smoke.. not a heavy hitter in the nicotine department.. but certainly not mild.. GL Pease never disappoints.. Always interesting the way he plays with flavors and I think with a few years on it this could be a modern classic. PART 2 I gotta say.. the more I smoke this.. im less impressed.. maybe age will meld it all.. but im getting a lot of rum and not very much flavor many smokes.. sorry.. maybe not quite going down to 2.. but thinking about it.. actually a little bit surprised by some of these 'high creditioneled reviewers who give this 4.. I don't get it.. and I'm a big GL Pease fan..

Smoking now:

Tobacco is in broken apart flakes. Very nice presentation. Tin note is a pungent odor of Virginias and perique. Fruity, fermented, sour hay, with a dried fruit and cheese aroma. Packed and lite well enough. Moisture level seems just fine.

The perique is definitely noticeable and adds a dried fruit earthy floral element to the grassy tangy Virginia. Theres a nice woody earthy burley tone in the back ground. The cavendish and rum tones it down and makes for a surprisingly smooth smoke for a navy blend. No bite, little mouth tingle and the retrohale is very nice. Defiantly going to be a regular in my rotation for a while.

With all of the bread, stewed fruits, bran, black walnuts, cocoa, raisins, figs and rum going on here, I wanna' grab me a fork n' knife and a big fat snifter of Grand Marnier. Even the smoke is fat and chewy -- so good! I give it a good rubbing-out with a 15-minute dry time before rapidly oxidizing said tobacco into all of its elemental goodness. This is top quality vegetation which begs ablation without reservation and/or hesitation!
