Certainly an American classic. This is an easy smoking, no fuss tobacco, akin to the few other burley OTCs that have survived over time. Semi-sweet with definite hints of anise and some very, very light cocoa which is more evident in the pouch. Not as sweet, cased, or anise-flavored as Carter Hall, and less nutty and cocoay than Prince Albert. Otherwise, just a mild burley with only a hint of roasted nuts and traces of both bitterness and sourness. The cut is conducive to packing pipes of all sizes and a simple scoop without much tamping is perfect to load it up. Like many of these blends it lights quick and burns fairly quickly.

Overall, not a bad blend and one I would buy again without reservation. Ultimately just a little light weight to earn a full recommendation. I also found it to develop some off flavors at times. If asked blindly to recommend a tobacco, even a drugstore blend, it wouldn't be this one. On the other hand, if I was specifically asked if is SWR worth a try I would say yes. So I would say this is a very strong 2 star blend.

Got a coupon for one dollar for a 1.5 oz pouch. After opening it it was as dry as kilnd dried sawdust. No flavor burnt fast. No bite though. I could see blending this with a moist cavendish. For me not a winner.

I'm pretty new to pipe tobacco, but have tried about 20 kinds so far. I enjoyed the Prince Albert and saw a few people mention that this was a basic smoking tobacco like Prince Albert so I gave it a try.

Immediately I noticed the smell when I opened it. Horrible. Let a few people take a whiff and all agreed, it does not smell good at all.

Taste was ok, it didn't smoke too bad, and I liked the cut. As someone mentioned, it was like granola almost which I liked and found easy to pack into the bowl. It wasn't anything special smoke wise, just a good straight forward smoke, like Prince Albert. However, the smell of it in the bag was such that I finally just gave it away. Maybe I got a bad batch? No idea, but, in the future when I buy a basic straight forward go-to tobacco, I'll stick with Prince Albert or the Lane 1-Q.

The pouch says its aromatic but its just straight tobacco with no casing. From the pouch it was bone dry so i had to revive it over night. It has an earthy taste and a slightly sweet aroma but not pleasing to everyone. I personally like this blend as an afternoon smoke. I prefer Carter Hall over this blend any day however.

Yup, a burley. A good easy smoke, I can see why it is a classic. It was very light tasting, the greenish (as in plants) burley taste was there and it was a bit sweet on the draw. It burned well in my bowl but I was interrupted. My wife, who tolerates my Latikias and likes a good aromatic, well she usually just leaves the porch when she doesn't like what I am smoking, this time she was across the house and came and shut the windows and said it smelled like cigarette smoke and that I need to stop smoking it now. Wow, that was a reaction. Even my daughter who likes the Latikias hated it. Two stars because it smokes easy, but only two since the house committee has said no sir to the Sir at our home.

It's OK, but better options abound. I prefer any of the MacBaren or Cornell & Diehl burleys.

Govern Yourself Accordingly.

This is burley tobacco with a light casing of some kind of general sweetness. Pouch smells nutty and maybe some chocolate notes, but very subtle. The room note is good and the blend goes great with morning coffee. It is also good to bring a pipe back to neutral after smoking aromatics or heavy latakia blends in it.

Well, I am torn on this old blend. It is very flavorful when you first crack the lid on the can, or pop open the pouch, but it has an essence that seems to evaporate.

I have a 14 oz. tub of this, that I have had for over a year, and after about 6 months it became flavorless, truly flavorless, yet it is not really dry.

Its a peculiar thing, yet if you can smoke the whole tub while it is "fresh" it is a very tasty and satisfaying burley smoke.

Nice straightforward and easy smoking (short on matches or lighter fluid? go with this), but rather staid. It does get bitter halfway through even medium-sized pipes for me. Want something easy and relaxing in a small pipe? Try this.

What's wrong with this Tobacco? Absolutely nothing. What's right about it? Not much either. It is a fine, yet nondescript baccy. No real taste. Yet, lights well, burns well, etc. A little bland. Nothing great....nothing awful (see Borkim Riff Whiskey!) When it comes to OTC stuff, I would recommend Prince Albert over this stuff - but that is just me - some may agree some not. Still better than some bulks or other OTC I have had.
