Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Revor Plug

(3.74)
A blend of flue and fire cured tobaccos pressed and baked into a glossy black bar. Favoured by experienced pipesmokers who demand a strong cool satisfying smoke.
Notes: Revor Plug was originally an own label product made in the SCWS (Scottish Cooperative Wholesale Society ) factory in Glasgow, and sold only through Scottish Cooperative stores. Production was moved to the CWS (Cooperative Wholesale Society) factory in Manchester, and when the CWS stopped tobacco manufacture it was taken over by Manchester Tobacco. MT was taken over in it's turn by Japan Tobacco who eventually closed their manufacturing operations in the UK in the 2000s. Before this happened though production of Revor had been moved to GH in Kendal.

This is a really tasty plug. A long bar instead of a little square like some other plugs, this one pulls apart easily. I usually pull a few layers off then clip it into small pieces with scissors. Then a mild rubbing-out and it's ready for packing.

Other reviewers have described it well, but I have to respectfully disagree with those who say there is little or no flavoring. I sense a significant topping, more so in the aroma, but also significantly in the taste. It's definitely in the aromatic category IMHO, and I don't like aromatics, so it's kind of surprising that I like this so much.

But it's not the goopy kind of aro that tastes chemical and cloying. There is a sweetness here, but it's mild and natural. By natural I don't necessarily mean just tobacco-only sweetness, but a topping that enhances the tobacco experience instead of hiding it. It's rich, tasty, definitely unique, and very enjoyable. The flavoring subsides (or changes?) a bit as the bowl progresses and a toastiness comes through which is very nice. Lakeland soap is omnipresent but I actually like that so it's not a problem for me. Once it gets rolling, it provides big clouds of rich smoke and remains cool throughout the bowl.

This is apparently manufactured by Gawith & Hoggarth as it appears on their website. Typical of their fare, it's a quality weed and well worth the effort to acquire a bar or three.

This my friends, is British tobacco blending at it's finest. There is still some good in this art when such a plug is still made and sold.

My fellow reviewers have summed it up perfectly and i can't disagree with a word of it...I particularly like Warwicks and Briarchef's first para:-)

You will not find a more thoughtful, spicy dark and just wonderful plug than Revor even if you spend a lifetime looking...but go ahead anyway!

Revor is well described in physical and smoking characters by grimpeur. I will add that this is a superb tobacco for the new pipe smoker, especially if they are giving up cigarettes. I am prescriptive on this on two grounds. 1: There is absolutely no bite whatsoever and the tobacco smokes cool, with plenty of smoke. 2: It is strong and the fullness of flavour will go a long way toward replacing that simple "hit" from cigarettes. However, it is not a cigarette replacement. This is full on pipe smokers tobacco. The plug is a long strip about 1x1/2 inch by 6ins long. If it was a flake it would be a krumble cake, reminiscent of the texture of Penzance. As above that Jack Tar, OOh are Jim lad, Cap'n Hook reflection of most other Brit plugs is completely absent. This is the best plug this Brit has smoked in an age. Great stuff. with the full four stars intact. I could not find a fault big enough to knock a star off.

I stored it poorly - putting an open pouch in a baggie -- and after 7 years the plug was dark (nearly black) and so dry it splintered into dust practically when I chopped it.

But I see why so many rave about it. To me the main flavor is the smokey-ness of Kentucky (which I believe is smoked burley) The experience is tasty but consistent -- not a lot of evolution from top to bottom.

As others have reported, the flavoring is extremely mild (possibly it was stronger when new -- I don't remember) but very nice.

The main thing that makes Revor special is the smoothness -- an easy consistent and mild smoke. No burn, no gurgle. It's very strong in the nic department, but (maybe because it was so dry) it was easy to put down, and pick up without re-lighting. It also smokes remarkably slowly. When it finally went out I was surprised when I dumped the bowl how many more puffs I could have gotten out of it (at the risk of spinning into Aztec visions!)

Too bad it's no longer shipped from the UK. Since it doesn't contain any orientals (which apparently are disappearing in quality and variety) it ought to be around for awhile, just not in the USA.

As to room note... I think of that as something everyone else in the room can report -- so really, I have no idea 'bout that.

As mentioned this comes as a long, black bar of tobacco heaven. Some people say it is a pain in the posterior to prepare but, compared to some other plugs that need an oxyacetylene torch to get through them, this cuts up nicely with only a pen knife. The slice then breaks up very easily in the palm, pop it in your pipe and away you go. The smoke is full flavoured but very cool, with enough of a nic hit to keep you going without turning your toes up. The pouch note is almost antiseptic but still inviting and rich. The room note is tolerable; it wouldn’t win any awards from the wife so it’s a 2) on the smell scale. All round this is a no nonsense, straight to the point tobacco with pedigree. I could see how some pipers could be content to smoke this all day every day but I do like a bit of variation so I expect this to hang a round, on the shelf, jarred up, for a while yet; if it changes over the coming months and years I will be sure to let you know as, I suspect, this will only get more delightful as it gets older.

Definitely one to try I should say.

Am working my way through samples of Plugs available from On-Line tobacconist here in UK. Have now obtained a 5g sample of Revor and my first pipe of it was of mixed opinion. I had a bad packing and had to empty twice and start again due to too tight. I had cut off flakes with knife and this was difficult due to crumbly nature of plug. It lit easily with Corona Old Boy and needed little coaxing to burn. Was not impressed at all - little flavour - astringent taste (but no bite). Poor nose aroma from bowl. After 10 minutes I emptied pipe and dried it out as it was quite moist at bottom of bowl (Petersons 31). I then read the reviews here and was really surprised to see the high regard so many had for it. Decided to try again within 1 hour of first attempt. Crumbled and rubbed this time and got a better draw on fill. This tobacco is a real Trojan Horse for Nick O'Teen - burns easily and can be relit easily down through a deep ash cap. Comes into its own when 1/2 way point is reached. Certainly much prefer 3P's but will keep some of this 'playground bully' of a plug when I feel like having a smoke reminiscent of the long gone 'thick black' days.

This is my second pouch of this and the reason for my first ever review on this site (!) is to add a comment of which nobody has seemed to have discovered as yet. My first pouch was amazingly pliant, slightly damp and a very unusual plug-this one is another matter. Its extremely dried out, of which I am slightly disappointed about and very very closely resembles G+H Dark Plud- Unscented. Either way-despite with its obvious age , this is a great and worthy tobacco, fully wealthy and pondering in its full rich black coffee like presense.

This is a special type of smoke brick: long, compacted strips, like Coco's chocolate bars. Of course, if you're willing to try, take a bite. But I ended up killing it. First, the cellophane package is perfect for carrying around and can be rolled up into a thin stick. The humidity is just right. Of course, proper wake up grass, is dry humidity raised to a more easily ignited state, the effect is better. I didn't wake up. Open the bag, break off a piece with your fingers, and shred it carefully -- fill it! It's that simple: Light the fire. It takes a little patience. It is pleasant for you to observe the flame. Because of a long, distant, floral scent. At the same time, the tip of the tongue immediately feels a sweet but not overly cloying taste. It might be like tasting some kind of nectar, or a jammy snack. Nicotine, it must be said, is powerful. When you take a deep breath, you will be completely enveloped by the kind of breath that regular smokers are used to relying on. It is addictive and intoxicating. As the suction progresses, many complex smells are tried: earth, wood, forest after rain, grass... The ones you love, the ones you've been missing, the ones you've been longing for. By the way: My neighbor, through the window, also smelled a very peculiar smell; She said it was delightful. But what I do know is that she is a non-smoker. As for the burning, it is very smooth, a fire to the end. There is no need to refill the fire. I'm leaving out a slightly more complex tobacco at the bottom, about a quarter of the way. It's a habit, and the last few bites often change the impression. The ash is dry and free of that oily residue. This is something that deserves special praise. Although this is a recently produced tobacco, it is still close to my memory for many years. Also, I suggest that there are more people who can smoke it. Because it's special. Special!

I'm not a fan of overly topped or artificial aromatic blends so when first smelling this upon opening I was taken aback by the strong scent of Tonquin which comes across tangy and citrusy. When slicing and breaking up this plug comes apart like a cake and easily packed with minimal need for drying time. The topping comes through as a caramel and vanilla flavour when lit but not in your face with either and the taste fluctuates throughout the smoke. The great tobacco itself hits the mark every time and the balance between the topping and the tobacco is pitch perfect.
