Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Revor Plug

(3.74)
A blend of flue and fire cured tobaccos pressed and baked into a glossy black bar. Favoured by experienced pipesmokers who demand a strong cool satisfying smoke.
Notes: Revor Plug was originally an own label product made in the SCWS (Scottish Cooperative Wholesale Society ) factory in Glasgow, and sold only through Scottish Cooperative stores. Production was moved to the CWS (Cooperative Wholesale Society) factory in Manchester, and when the CWS stopped tobacco manufacture it was taken over by Manchester Tobacco. MT was taken over in it's turn by Japan Tobacco who eventually closed their manufacturing operations in the UK in the 2000s. Before this happened though production of Revor had been moved to GH in Kendal.

This is such a satisfying smoke. Lovely creamy heavy smoke. I cut it in half..then cut long ways and it falls apart into luxurious pieces that burn slow and perfectly after half a hour drying. There are no negatives here.decent nicotine.long burning.has a smokey room note. Goes very well with a scotch. A comforting smoke

Wonderful sweetened and scented tobacco. It comes in a plug which is easy to cut with a knife or even peel just using your fingers. It might benefit from a little drying time, but generally it does not produce much moisture and does not need many relights. Burns slow and cool.

Now to the actual smoking experience, it is smoky as the dark fired Kentucky is dominant and fairly sweet. Difficult to describe but it tastes sweet like maple syrup and molasses, probably a touch of licorice as well, with a walnut nuttiness and its smokiness is a little reminiscent of ground coffee. It is a strong tobacco but not overwhelmingly so and the mouthfeel is very rounded, it’s never harsh or sharp. Some reviewers have noted a floral Lakeland quality, I wouldn’t say so. It has an old-time feel but I sense no florality.

Difficult to imagine using Revor for repeated use but it’s an excellent tobacco when something stronger and sweeter is needed.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. - Revor Plug.

One long, jet black, bar of tobacco. To prepare this I slice a few slithers and then they crumble easily.

Although it goes against the grain of what I normally smoke, I like it! There's a light topping, Lakeland, but it doesn't smother the tobaccos with floral-fragrance. Of the two tobaccos I find the Kentucky the heavier, and the Virginia much lighter. Although the Kent' leads, it doesn't seem very bitter, burnt, or harsh, it's quite smooth for Kentucky. The burn from it's cool, and medium in speed; well, that's dependant on preparation!

Nicotine: very strong. Room-note: not pleasant.

As I usually despise preparing plug blends, and don't particularly enjoy strong Kentucky blends, it's a surprise that I want to highly recommend this!

Four stars.

I'm not sure I can follow the other reviews in terms of the nuances of flavour that they describe, but I'll give it a go. I can't remember how I came to order this. Probably because as I've grown older I've come the realise that "less is more" and the marketing and packaging of this tobacco is underwhelming. I also wanted to try a plug tobacco.

When I opened the pack and took out the bar of tobacco I immediately assumed it would need "special treatment". Careful preperation, lots of drying, etc. My experience of a number of flakes was that it might be like trying to light a pipe full of gravel. Completely wrong. The bar is soft and easy to carve. It lights and keeps going with no trouble whatsoever.

Taste-wise it's subtle and seems reminiscent of cocoa. There's a slight hint of lakeland, but just a note. It doesn't change much during the course of a bowl, but is none the worse for it. Nicotine isn't lacking but it's not overly strong. I don't think I could smoke it all day long, but at the end of a tough day it hits the spot.

All told I find it almost perfect and will be ordering plenty more.

A very rare tobacco here in the US, if you are able to find some or trade something for it, anything, DO IT! It comes in a pouch, pressed into a classic plug. This is a complex blend that is hard to describe; others have done it better than I can. It’s a ballsy, heavy classic tobacco tasting blend. Earthy and Smokey with slight dark chocolate notes. A heavy hitter with leathery, and classic tobacco tones that will remind you of what our forefathers smoked, old leather books and that classic “tobacco” essence. So damn good.

In terms of strength - I’d you don’t have hair on your chest it will give you some and if you do, it will double your current bush! I will only smoke this again after a big steak and potatoes dinner.

Excellent flavor with just a touch of sweetness. Won't bite, and burns nice and cool.

This here has reached the very top of my list. I am amazed that it appears that only one or two other people have noticed the Latakia in this blend. It took me awhile to pin point it but it's most definitely there. It's a very soft, light Latakia but it adds a smoky creaminess to the blend that is just out of this world, some claim that it is the Dark Fired that I'm tasting but I don't buy that I just don't think GH&Co list the Latakia portion and therefor most folks don't taste it (compare this to McConnell's Latakia Flake). It's very lightly topped with some floral notes but the tobacco is the major player here. The first few smokes didn't really wow me, I had to set it down and revisit it at a later date so that my taste memory could get familiar with the flavors this one provides. Once it "clicked" for me, it was over, I immediately found myself on www.gqtobaccos.com and I ordered a large haul of this, unfortunately it's not available to order here in the States so I had to import it. Kind of on the pricey side but worth every penny. I see that a lot of folks find this strong in the nicotine department, for me I would say it's about medium, not even close to the strength of some of the GH&Co. ropes. Some of the best tobaccos are those that take time to reveal their beauty and Revor Plug is beautiful indeed. Absolutely essential!

Opening the pouch, a scent of currants, cocoa and other sweet stuff penetrated my nostrils, and it was wonderful. I could also smell the Kentucky miles away. It so very slightly reminded me of SG 1792 Flake's fire cured smell.

Glossy bar as described, easily cut into ribbons or coarse cuts. It needs to be a bit aerated in order to be smoked correctly without having to relight often.

One is welcomed by pure bliss of heavenly smoke, medium to strong N hit and a wonderful special aroma that is so "lakelandy" yet unique.

I acquired a pouch of Revor from a forum buddy after reading so many good things about it, and let's just say that this is one tobacco blend that lives up to the hype. The plug is a dark brown, almost black bar that breaks up easily enough so prep isn't a big issue. Revor Plug takes to the flame very well, with just one relight after the initial char light.

As for taste, Revor Plug delivers nothing more than good, strong, but sweet at the same time tobacco flavor, with a liberal dose of nicotine to boot. I would liken the mouthfeel of this to be almost like what you experience when eating a very good steak, with lots of rich, creamy smoke that is cool, and wouldn't bite if you begged it to.

I really can't think of anything bad to say about Revor Plug except that it is really hard to get in the US, and that is a shame, because it could easily be an all day smoke for me, and one I would have pounds of in my cellar otherwise. This is one blend that a 4 star rating just isn't good enough. Needless to say I'm impressed, and highly recommend it!

Appearance out the pouch:a very dark matt almost black crumbly block(looks like a segment of chocolate browny)

Feels moist and breaks easily, quite crumbly,,;texture in rubbing out feels powdery,,i wonder wether coco powder is put between the leaves before pressing and firing?

A slightly soapy taste on lighting, but this goes and you get a mocca coffe taste, muscovado sugar, chickory, dark woody flavour(but not in the burning smoked wood sence),cool, dark chocolatey, mildly floral sometimes.

I basically taste a slightly sweet dark tobacco with a hint of coco/dark chocolate(no milk).I wouldn't class this as aromatic though(its borderline because its flavouring if its got any is mild)

Tastes better than it smells:i went for a walk in my factory and left my pipe on the bench,,and when i came back i could smell the room note like a pedestrian..

Room Note:of smouldering burn't tire rubber at a traffic light and coco powder - also it reminded me slightly of "condor ready rubbed",which is surprising because "condor" is one tobacco which i disliked...Maybe this is simular tobacco without the "condor" soapy lavender casing?

A very cooperative tobacco - it stays lit, burns cool, and lasts forever..Burns to the best pure white fluff dust ash, which seems satisfying because you feel there is no wastage..

Easily an allday smoke (for me atleast) but sometimes i tire of the chocolateness - (i usually smoke a variety of tobacco's a day)Nicoteen is felt but not in the taste and it has a good fix.

You may want to dedicate a pipe to this tobacco,,,;not because it leaves a ghost, but even though it is med to full flavoured;it is mild also in that you could taste possibly whatever was in your pipe before smoking this(especially oriental's like what is in your typical medium english blend)..

No bite whatsoever,,it doesn't even try to...I will definately be making this a part of my in crowd of rotation ,and have bought some more pouches already..
