An American classic (depending on who you speak with) that needs no introduction, famous for its longstanding position within the pipe smoking community of America and infamous for the bite it can deliver.

Cherry aros generally get quite a bad rap, on a personal note every time I see a new cherry ago introduced part of me groans because of the already saturated market of them, done well a cherry ago can be a joy to smoke and one you wish to make repeated bowls of, done badly then it is just a Labour from start to finish and a substantial waste of ones time. so what are my thoughts of paladin, actually I find it quite a nice smoke. I still can't quite get my head around the American style otc cut though, it always looks like dust to me but on closer inspection it resembles a lightly rubbed out cube cut.

moisture is fine and needs no drying time and packs easily into the well used and abused cob and once lit it produces plumes upon plumes of heavy cherry scented smoke. it is not a complex smoke by any means, the cherry is always there but I get some nice nutty sweetness from the burley from time to time, strength is a good middle of the road one, granted there is a little there but it should never overwhelm and should keep you going for repeated bowls but if you aren't very sweet toothed the cherry flavour may weary you. I think the cherry is done well, I don't find it akin to cough syrup or chemical like, I wouldn't say it's the finest morello cherry juice, but it certainly doesn't seem artificial, if you really want to know what artificial cherry tastes like try borkum riff cherry (abysmally horrid). Room note shouldn't prove a problem to most it's actually quite nice, the volume of smoke may raise the odd eyebrow here and there. all in all I actually quite enjoy paladin black cherry, it certainly wouldn't push any of my favourites off it's perch but for a change of pace, a quick livener or the time when I want to smoke but not think too much about it, paladin makes a nice choice, and is deffinitely one of the nicer cherry blends I have tried

When you first open the tin, you may have your head knocked back with a blast of black cherry topping.

Once dried out a bit, the black cherry is more subdued.

I don't know what this used to be, but it now tastes like Half and Half with a more straightforward Blackcherry flavoring.

As such, it isn't bad. I prefer it over black cavendish/pg laden type bulks.

Like Half and Half, you have to also like burley to like Paladin.

I was surprised by how much I liked this blend. I had heard less than spectacular things about it, so expectations were very low.

Upon opening the pouch I get a quite dark cough syrup type black cherry smell with a little Half & Half floating in the background. Quite strong.

The smoke is the other way around. It tastes like Half & Half with a little cherry floating in the background. I like H&H, so I like this blend.

Greetings Friends. I thought I would offer my comments on this obviously quite "underrated" blend. I actually think it's pretty good for a "fruity aromatic." To me it tastes like Half & Half only with the cherry top flavor increased exponentially. I guess I would include two caveats: (1) Avoid it if you don't like cherry flavoring in general and, (2) definitely open the pouch and let it dry over night. STG uses too much moister in their packaging with both this and H & H.

I try to never throw away tobacco but I made an exception with this blend. If this was the first tobacco I tried I would not be smoking a pipe today. No taste and burns hot. Picked it up a a local store because I ran out of tobacco while out. Should have waited till I got home. Smell of a cherry lifesaver.

Paladin Black Cherry is the poster child for goopy aromatics.

The stoved cavendish tobacco presumably is some sort of mixture between burley and Virginia, but there is no way of telling. There is no tobacco flavor to be found.

The taste is a strongly artificial cherry, quite similar to Robitussin cough medicine. That is a prescription only cough medicine because it contains codeine. It would be better if this stuff actually were flavored with Robitussin. A little narcotic would improve the smoking experience.

There may be some pipesters who enjoy a very strong cherry flavor who might find this to their liking, in spite of its artificiality, but even so they will find Paladin goes bitter and goopy half way down the smoke.

Yes, you can make this smokable. Cut it with at least 50% Prince Albert. But with that much of another tobacco it is a totally different mixture.

Do I have anything positive to say about Paladin? Yep. The room note is OK.

well i took the dive and went for the tub..i cannot say i am very dissappointed but at that price tag you might as well score your self some macbaren, peter stockkeby or lane bulk. the flavoring is strong and it does taste as it smells indeed.the room note is accepted to some degree although it might be a little stale sweet if that makes any sense(smoking it outdoors brought more complements). the tobcco cut is fine chops very similar to half and half (go figure its the same comany), it burns well and even and the casing makes it one of the sweetest tobaccos i tried so if you are looking for strong cherry then by all means there you have it.

Picked up a pouch at one of the local beverage centers. Upon opening the pouch I immediately was hit with a cough syrup, cherry lollipop something or other smell!

After a few bowls, I decided this wasn't for me. I had recently picked up a pouch of Carter Hall (very, very dry and older than me I think!)at a local grocery that I had only smoked several bowls from. I mixed the two in a roughly 50/50 blend and placed in one of my jars. The CH has taken some of the moisture from the overly moist PBC and the overwhelming cherry of the PBC has mellowed. All in all, this mixture isn't a horrible smoke now!

Update 1/31/17: New Lane product is much improved. Gone is the cough syrup taste mentioned above. Better in a cob IMO. Improved room note and taste. Bumped from 2 to 3 stars.

You get what the package says - "Black Cherry." I smoked quite a bit of this during my early piper days and always found it a pleasant smoke. I enjoy cherry flavoring and the beautiful room note a good cherry blend can produce. Long gone are the days I would choose a pipe tobacco based on its flavoring, since I now enjoy the taste of good tobacco first, and any added flavoring has to play second fiddle. I never found it to be medicinal, nor did I find it harsh or bitter. A bit gurgly, yes. Dottle, some. Inexpensive, you bet! All in all 3 stars for those starting out, but only 2 stars for those who have developed a taste for fine tobacco.

10-1-21: Revisited after a good many years. Still pleasant with a nice taste of Burley and an old timey room note. Overall a 3 star blend for me.

Paladin Black Cherry— Look, this is an aromatic that has been around for decades. This and Middleton Cherry Blend are basically the first "true" aromatics. It is very classic in taste and aroma. I can't understand why some people are (surprised) when they open the pouch that they get hit with a blast of, well, BLACK CHERRY. When I first tried this 30 years ago I thought it was disgusting. This and Captain Black Cherry turned me off of pipe smoking all together. Well, 30 years went by and now I love it. The Pinkerton version was overwhelmed with an artificial cherry smell and it burned hot and wet, plus it bit my mouth up so bad that it stung for 2 days. Now since Lane took over the production the tobacco is of higher quality and the casing and toppings are toned down. It lights with no problem and burns down to a fluffy white ash. The taste is medium and the room note is the classic/vintage pipe smell. It is quite comforting and homey smelling. I think of a 1970s living room with an old floor model T.V. And an end table with a pipe rack and the Price Is Right in the background. Look, it's not Cult Blood Red Moon. It is a classic drugstore blend that smells nice and tastes good plus it's cheap in price. Like all American style drugstore burley and virginia blends they have the tendency to bite if you try to smoke it like a cigarette. I like it. I smoke a bowl a day of this. My all day is Prince Albert and Sir Walter Raleigh regular, but I throw this and Captain Black original in the mix as well. I like the scoop loading procedure for packing this tobacco, its very easy. Scoop then tamp and repeat one other time. If you load in the three packing procedure it will burn hot and give some tongue bite. But, if you do the "Codger" scoop, it will burn nice and cool and the flavor of the delicious burley will shine. Cocoa, black cherry and leather notes are what I get. My opinion is to try it. If you don't like it, gift it to someone or mix it with a classic burley blend and try it that way.
