I picked this up on a whim the other day at the local B&M. I'm pretty particular about cherry blends, as most of them bite like hell and taste acrid. I honestly wasn't expecting much, but I figured if I didn't like it I'd either give it to my brother or mix it with Lane BCA until it was all gone. Upon opening the pouch the tangy cherry aroma was very present, as well as a soft vanilla scent. It was sopping wet, so I knew I'd have to let it dry. I left the pouch open over night and it was nearly to the proper moisture level by morning. It packed well into my cob and took a flame fairly well after 2 false lights. The blast of cherry flavor was definitely there! I was surprised to find out that it wasn't biting me, even after giving it a good ol' strong puff. It burnt hot though, and I slowed down my puffing out of fear of a burn through. I never did get bit though, which is odd. Half way through the bowl the cherry backs off and the toasty tobacco flavor comes through, giving it that old school pipe tobacco taste and smell. I must admit: I'm really liking this stuff right now. It isn't Cult Blood Red Moon, but it isn't suppose to be. It's a drug store burley blend. It is MUCH better than Borkum Riff Cherry, Captain Black Cherry, and Middleton's Cherry - all of which bite and taste like cough syrup. I give this a solid 2.5. It isn't something I'd recommend to those who dislike cherry or fruity blends. I wouldn't recommend it to a new pipe smoker, because I'm sure there is some bite in there somewhere. I also don't think that a lot of smokers will find this enjoyable because it burns hot (due to the amount of moisture in it, I'm sure). It's a good workshop tobacco, and I appreciated it for the change-of-pace it provides.

I'm somewhat dismayed by all the negative reviews. The pouch smells amazing. Smoke wise, its one of the few aromatics that actually tastes the way it smells and the room note is wonderful. It lit easily and burned smoothly.

Overall Paladin Black Cherry has become one of my "go to" aromatics. Its far better than its price (or negative reviews) would have you believe. Give it a try!

I must say I was very surprised with blend after reading some of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. The aroma was quite pleasant and the flavor was bold and full but not overwhelming, the down side is that it was a hit an miss at times in the aroma and flavor department not to say one could not enjoy this blend, still well worth the smoke enjoy.

A pretty decent aromatic. If you want an English blend or anything heavy, go elsewhere, but if you like cherries, this may be the tobacco for you. A bit wet and hot if smoked too fast. A very smooth, sweet smoke. A bit of tongue bite too. Not nearly as bad as say Captain Black Royal.

...While I prefer strong Virginia Plug/Flake tobaccos and have for the past 46 years...I am reacquainting myself with many of the old "drug store" tobaccos, and as in some cases, I very much like what I have found...

I smoked Paladin back in the early-mid 1960's and didn't care for overly sweet flavored tobaccos...that said, I recently purchased a pouch of Paladin and this version is produced by Lane, not Pinkerton...The Pinkerton version was a rough cut similar to Granger/Half & Half with a strong cherry flavoring...I find the Lane version "rounder", appropriate moisture, more of a "crimp" type cut, and while still sweet and flavor laden, not so much as it used to be... Frankly, I like it.

While it will not be in my top 15 tobaccos in rotation, I believe I'll keep a tub of it around, as I do with many of the old burley tobaccos..Perhaps worthy of another trial for those wishing to judge differences in this version vs Pinkerton's.

enjoyed in a group 4 or larger size pipe...

...a pipe is to be savored...

I bought this because I was looking for an in your face wham bam "hello, Im Mr. Explosive cherry flavor how are you?" and I got just that. This blend smells great in the pouch and taste just like it smells.

If you want a mild light smoke then this is not for you. But if you want a face smashing cherry bomb then you will like it. I wanted something to change up the routine of my boswells blends. (raspberry cream being my favorite)

If you dont like aromatics, dont buy it (and please dont give it a bad review knowing you dont like aromatics) All in all Im probably gonna buy a tin to have around. If nothing else just so it makes the cabin smell nice!

I would give this 3.5 stars. But, we can't do that.

First of all, any experienced pipe smoker knows that you can't judge a tobacco according to the first smell upon opening a package, but according to how it smokes.

Does this tobacco smell like "Play-Doh" upon opening a pouch? Yes.

But, so what?

It has enough cherry flavor to tell you that it is a cherry flavored aromatic, and enough flavoring beasties to beat down any misbehaving bites. It is also a full bodied smoke.

Quality control is great with this blend. If you smoked it five years ago and bought a pouch, today, it will still be the same blend. It delivers faithfully.

In the late 90s when I was just starting out smoking a pipe, I met a guy nicknamed “Ski” who loved this stuff. I tried a pouch back then when I was exploring pipe tobaccos and maybe like a lot of us, I was trying the ‘drugstore’ blends this being one of them. I did not think it was that bad. A few moths ago when I moved to another state I went into your typical cigarette store and saw this one of the few pipe blends they offered and decided for nostalgia sake what the heck and bought a pouch. I just finished this up and honestly and I am not ashamed to admit it but I like it despite its 1.9 star rating. The smell of the pouch is an intoxicating cherry with almost a licorice smell to it. Yes, the taste of this is sort of cough syrup medicine but I knew what I was getting into when I got this. Obviously, I only smoke in dedicated pipes that I have trashed with just about every aromatic in my collection that I have smoked so far. For me it is what I would call a fun tobacco to puff on and remember what fun I had in the beginning when starting out on this great hobby/past time many years ago. Will I buy again, probably not as I have for too many tins left unexplored but was a nice change of pace. So, buy yourself some Luden’s Cherry Cough Drops, pop open a Cherry Coke and enjoy this blend. 😊

An American classic (depending on who you speak with) that needs no introduction, famous for its longstanding position within the pipe smoking community of America and infamous for the bite it can deliver.

Cherry aros generally get quite a bad rap, on a personal note every time I see a new cherry ago introduced part of me groans because of the already saturated market of them, done well a cherry ago can be a joy to smoke and one you wish to make repeated bowls of, done badly then it is just a Labour from start to finish and a substantial waste of ones time. so what are my thoughts of paladin, actually I find it quite a nice smoke. I still can't quite get my head around the American style otc cut though, it always looks like dust to me but on closer inspection it resembles a lightly rubbed out cube cut.

moisture is fine and needs no drying time and packs easily into the well used and abused cob and once lit it produces plumes upon plumes of heavy cherry scented smoke. it is not a complex smoke by any means, the cherry is always there but I get some nice nutty sweetness from the burley from time to time, strength is a good middle of the road one, granted there is a little there but it should never overwhelm and should keep you going for repeated bowls but if you aren't very sweet toothed the cherry flavour may weary you. I think the cherry is done well, I don't find it akin to cough syrup or chemical like, I wouldn't say it's the finest morello cherry juice, but it certainly doesn't seem artificial, if you really want to know what artificial cherry tastes like try borkum riff cherry (abysmally horrid). Room note shouldn't prove a problem to most it's actually quite nice, the volume of smoke may raise the odd eyebrow here and there. all in all I actually quite enjoy paladin black cherry, it certainly wouldn't push any of my favourites off it's perch but for a change of pace, a quick livener or the time when I want to smoke but not think too much about it, paladin makes a nice choice, and is deffinitely one of the nicer cherry blends I have tried

When you first open the tin, you may have your head knocked back with a blast of black cherry topping.

Once dried out a bit, the black cherry is more subdued.

I don't know what this used to be, but it now tastes like Half and Half with a more straightforward Blackcherry flavoring.

As such, it isn't bad. I prefer it over black cavendish/pg laden type bulks.

Like Half and Half, you have to also like burley to like Paladin.
