HU Tobacco Aus dem Krater Plug

The Krater Plug is a medium strength, pleasantly sweet and spicy plug tobacco. For experienced pipe smokers it's a wonderful tobacco. Yet due to its pleasant strength and good burning characteristics, this tobacco is also for pipe smokers that aren't too experienced. A delight for any tobacco lover that just wants to gain some experiences with plug tobaccos without getting overwhelmed by their strength. Not too strong, but also not too mild, not too sweet, but also not too spicy. All in all a well balanced and simply tasty blend. The Kraterplug is a perfect companion for the classic Kraterflakes. Virginia/Kentucky/Perique at its best!
Notes: Released in 01/18.

The gold and darker Virginias provide a burst of tart and tangy citrus, grass and a few floral notes, some tangy ripe dark fruit, earth, wood, a little bread, vinegar/barbecue, slight sourness, and a touch of the floral. They form the base of the blend. The dark fired Kentucky offers a fair amount of spice, earth, wood, floralness, vegetation, smoke, leather, a few nuts, slight molasses and some dry sourness as a supporting player. The spicy, raisiny, plumy, earthy perique is a secondary star, but at times is crowded out by the aspects of the bold Kentucky. The strength is a step past the medium mark, while the taste is just shy of the center of medium to strong. The nic-hit is medium. Won’t bite or get harsh, but it does sport a few small rough edges. The plug has a little density, but breaks apart with little difficulty. I peel off the layers and cube cut them. Burns cool, clean and slow with a mildly inconsistent, deeply rich, bold, sweet and savory floral, spicy, slightly campfire-like flavor that translates to the long lingering, pleasant after taste. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires a lot of relights. The room note is tolerable. Not an all day smoke by any means, but it is repeatable. Three and half stars due to a small inconsistency of the interplay between the Virginias and dark fired Kentucky.

Well I couldn't find the perique or the Kentucky in this, infact the tin I got was open with the seal intact, normally under such circumstances I would have returned the tin but as that meant sending it back to Germany, coupled with the recent dreadful experiences with the postal services, I decided not to.

I ordered a pipe on Christmas Day, it took almost 10 days to reach me, I ordered this, before Christmas, and this took 2 weeks, normal postage, about 4 days. Anyway I digress. The tin note I can tell you nothing about, I have a very poor sense of smell, coupled with the fact the tin was opened and I was able to pry the lid off with my aged fingers, did little to help. The tobacco did feel moist enough though and cutting with my trusty knife confirmed the fact, now although I couldn't taste any perique or Kentucky, if it was there, it had been applied with a very light hand, what I did taste was an absolutely superb Virginia leaf, somewhat on the mild side, barely reaching medium, this tobacco will not bite, smooth and sweet without being the least bit cloying, this will make for me at least, a superb Sumertime smoke when I'm looking for something a little lighter.

A few tins gathered in now will I think, result in a nice little bit of ageing.

If your a Virginia lover, or are tempted to try a Virginia, and a plug as well, you can't go far wrong with this, as stated, no bite and easy to prepare.

The Krater Plug is delivered in a brownie sized cube , wonderfully marbled to look at . The cube is much too small for the 100 gr. can it is delivered in . The tin note is inviting , earthy Virginia . The plug is very dense , really a heavy cube . Preparation is quite a job . I used a razor sharp thin knife and still found it difficult to slice . After achieving a few small slices I fully rubbed it out . Completed for the pipe is resembles sort of a cube cut . This is a mixture of Virginia , Kentucky and perique with the Virginia way forward . The smoke is sublime providing a deep Virginia experience with top notes of leather and wood. I would rate it as just to the north of medium . The Virginia is subtle but not too sweet , just the way I like it . Care must be taken in packing the pipe to make sure it is not too tight and also to have no thick pieces on top that would inhibit lighting . I could compare this to Germain's Medium Flake , which is no longer available in it's original form . This is a sipping tobacco , I believe the slower the better . I can easily rank this tobacco with the best I have ever smoked . The time spent on preparing it is well worth the effort .
