An excellent Burley tobacco. The light topping adds a very mild sweetness but isn't chemical tasting or bitter. This is one of the few burleys that I could smoke all day long. Simple, tasty and easy on the tongue. This isn't the most complex blend on the market, but it isn't supposed to be. You could pay a lot more for tobacco much worse than this.

My absolute favorite blend. First tried when I was in my 20's. Have to admit, the dog was a selling point, much like Seadog breweries Root Beer. Smells much like a typical burley. A couple of matches and it is sweet and nutty burley for the next 45 minutes to an hour. Pairs great with most things. I like to smoke it while listening to classical music with tea. Doesn't suffer from the burley bitters and doesn't bite. This is one good dog.

Unlike some other reviewers, I consider this to be a great driving tobacco. I like to take Granger with me on long trips. I never noticed the nicotine jolt reported by others, but then I didn't get it from Nightcap (Dunhill) either.

Granger packs very easily, I can pack a pipe while I am driving - without becoming a hazard to others!

It lights easily, and minimal re-lights are needed. Again, good for driving and smoking.

The taste is honest and true. I believe that the curing process gives it the flavor, I don't think there is any topping present. Very simple, one-dimensional. And sometimes that can be a good thing, yes?

Granger is inexpensive, packs and smokes well. Doesn't bite, doesn't goop up your pipe. Very unassuming tobacco. Doesn't pollute your pipe with a taste that you can't get rid of. What more could you ask for?

May very well be the best of the 'drugstore' lot.

When tobacco burns, there is smoke, and we smoke it, hoping to get the following feeling:

1: It smells like food or perfume.

2: Hopefully it will be microprocessed and retain a bit of the original taste of tobacco

3: The desire to fully obtain the original taste of tobacco.

I am very grateful to this website, the reviewers have made it very clear to me that if I need a change of flavor today, I will read the reviews and mixes first, and if you buy a mix you don't like and complain about it, you should see a doctor, unless you are a beginner.

Of all the American Classic blends, Granger is probably the best.

The tobacco does most of the talking; there is a light topping that works to enhance the natural flavors of the tobacco and it works well.

It smokes very cool in every pipe I've tried it in and I think the room note is amazing. They recently started selling this in 7oz tins which is why I tried it. Glad I did...will be in the rotation.

I purchased this as I am becoming an old codger myself. After enjoying many upper tier blends I was surprised to find Granger to be surprisingly good. Room note is somewhat inoffensive according to the wife. I found Granger to be a cool slow smoking tobacco with a nice nutty flavor. Even puffed to quickly it never became acrid or bit. I will be keeping Granger around for bird hunting and fishing.

I don't know how this could get above 2 stars. I mean it's ok, but it's so.......o-k. Just a breath of cocoa mix in the can, along with a drip of honey I'm guessing. Reminded me of my Granny's Tube rose snuff can. Virtually the same smell, which I admit shocked some memories out of me. I'm about 1/4 through a can now, and just can't see it waking up in the choir loft and singing to me. To me this is a definate blender. Maybe it was better at one time. Maybe I got a dud tin. I keep getting a dark toast taste in my mouth when I smoke this. Not really pleasant, but I'm not gonna spit it out. Just grimace a little bit. Meh, it's ok. I'm not gonna romanticize about how old timers smoked this. I knew those old timers. What they smoked is not reeeeeaallly an indication of quality. SWR totally spanks this btw, and was at the same gas stations. As does H/H, C.Hall, P.A, and Velvet.... just sayin

Update: I'm still workin on this, and my opinion hasn't changed. I can tell you 12oz, is a LOT of this stuff. I mix it now in with Super Value Chocolate (mainly to help this burn) at a 50/50 mix, and honestly, I don't know which one comes through more. I think I made C.Hall. If you really smoke Granger slow, and really retrohale and look for it, you get this "somebody's grilling hamburgers" flavor. At least part of the burley in this blend has had some exposure to smoke curing.

Upon opening the humidor the aroma was earthy, woody and a hint of cocoa. The tobacco seemed ready to go but I sat it out on a paper towel for a half hour.

Filling the bowl was pleasant and easy with the coarse cut blend. This burned very steady and cool, but it can bite if puffed hard. It burned down to a gray ash with less than normal relights. Even sipping there was a profusion of smoke that smelled like marshmallows browned over a campfire.

Upon lighting I was greeted by a smooth and light nutty flavor that had a very slight sweet overtone with a woody, earthy background that after a couple of sips was joined by a very, very light cocoa and a even lighter molasses taste. The taste was very consistent from this point on till the end of the smoke. Nothing overbearing, harsh or annoying here. This is just a plain jane pleasant smoke that give you nothing but Burley.

I enjoyed this very much. While I prefer the sweeter blends such Sir Walter, Carter Hall and Match Field and Stream I can say I enjoyed the pure simple, straight forward simple smoke that Granger provides. Nothing complex here. Just a good, simple smoke that one can enjoy while staying busy doing work or just sitting and listening to Bing Crosby like I was doing. If you like your smokes complex steer clear of this. But, if you want a smoke where the tobacco is the star of the show, this is the one you want. Will I buy this again. I sure will. I found that this was a wonderful smoke for those times when you want to smoke but not focus on what the tobacco flavors are doing. The only thing negative I can say is it is a bit bland for me but in certain situations that is great and the other is that is is so smooth and and mild that it is easy to puff and when you do that this dog (see their logo with the dog) will bite. 3.5 out of 4 stars.

My first experience with Granger was about 1975 when a colleague had it in his pipe. I liked the aroma and had to try it. Then, I found cube cut, dry tobacco, terrible tongue bite, and tossed the pouch. Recently, I found this and several other blends for under $25 for a 12 to 14 ounce tin and decided to try it again. This time, I found good moisture level, longer cut, and better flavor. The present version of Granger is much more " tongue friendly". The nutty taste of good burley comes through, and makes a pleasant smoke. If smoked too fast, it will bite, but a slow rhythm will produce good flavor. Not my favorite burley but I would buy more if one of my favorites was not available. This is definitely a burley lovers blend.

UPDATE: 12-12-2018. The more I smoke Granger, the more I like it. Upgrading to 4 stars because it is what it says, a burley blend.

Smoke what you like and like what you smoke.
