Cornell & Diehl Derringer
(2.92)
Simple yet unique, heady yet versatile, elegant but still packing a whollop, we think you'll find this killer Virginia blend much as the settlers of the Old West found its namesake. Presented as a ready rubbed so it's quick to pack and smooth on the draw.

Smoking now:
Bulk version. Bag note is sweet hay and tang Virginia. Nothing special but nice. Moisture and mixture is fine. Seems a little on the dry side which is to my liking so I packed it straight away.
Do you like Virginia tobacco? Yes? Then here we go. This is Virginia tobacco. Nothing special. Nothing wrong with it. It’s quite nice. Smoked very well as far as the mechanics go.
There’s everything you want in a Virginia, slightly sweet, slight citrus tang, slight fermented bread, slight wood, some pepper spiciness and vegetative flavors. Note the word slight is repeated. Everything’s kind of there but in slight amounts. There is a bit of a harshness to it however, some mouth tingle and spiciness. For me it benefits from a filter pipe. Nothing special. An ok Virginia especially at the bulk price.
Does well for blending as a base Virginia and that’s what I use it for now.

Received a sample of this, enough for a couple of bowls. Normal coarse cut from C&D. Lights and smokes easy. Bites a bit. I feel with some age it could be a middle of the pack runner in the crowded Virginia field. Probably a good blend to start with for a beginner smoker who is delving into straight Virginia’s. Nothing presented itself that would make me want to try it aged or even again for that matter.

Pouch appearance is wide, light/med brown colored and bright Virginia, ready rubbed with a few small flakes still intact. Perfect moisture content for immediate smoking.
Pouch aroma is pure Virginia tobacco. Grassy and hay like, sweet, and slight fig and fruity notes. Very faint fermented aroma noted.
a few small twigs in my 2oz bulk, but nothing major. I rubbed out the few remaining intact flakes before I loaded my first bowl. Packs well with a bit of spring
The tobacco does swell a bit on initial lighting. The Virginias are bright and brassy. Notes of hay, grass and a slight sweetness. This blend smokes dry and leaves your palate feeling the same. It is bitey, even when sipped. Requires several relights, and the room note is cigarette-ish. DGT'ing this blend makes that even worse. Some may really enjoy this blend for what it is. Would be a good fishing blend to keep the mosquitos away, or a blend to smoke while doing outdoor chores. But to me its monotone and bites too much.

I grabbed this one during a sale on C&D bulk tobaccos. I wanted to try as many of their offerings that sounded appealing, and this one fit the bill. The pouch aroma suggests black tea leaves and some sweet grassiness. This ready rubbed preparation appears to be a blend of around 75% red Virginia and 25% bright leaf. It takes a light easily and is a fairly straightforward VA, not a lot of complexity here. There are some attractive tangy notes early on. This is not a particularly sweet smoke, and is quite rough around the edges. It absolutely will bite if one’s cadence is not judicious. Some black pepper is notable towards the bottom of the bowl. I tried this in a churchwarden and alas the mouthfeel was still quite rough.
