Sutliff Tobacco Company Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend

(2.84)
A pleasing aromatic with a nutty sweet burley, gold cavendish, and flavored black cavendish taste. These tobaccos are combined with fruity plum and wine notes, along with a slight flavor push from a hint of Latakia for added sweetness and body. A harmonious blend that burns cool and slowly for full enjoyment.
Notes: Created in 1946, the blending was done under the personal supervision of Edward G. Robinson himself.

I think the can I got of this was old. It had no casing smell when I opened it. It smelled burley, and not much else. Lighting it was easy. It caught immediately. It tasted very nutty. It reminded me of eating roasted pecans and walnuts, not unpleasant but not one I'd keep in my usual rotation. I may try another can some day, just to see if I can get the flavors and aromas others have talked about in the earlier reviews.

There's nothing unique or particularly outstanding about this blend. It's a very basic aromatic with an undetectable amount of Latakia. A bit of a fruity flavor and not much else. Worth trying once.

Preparation & Burn: 5/10 Nice cut but moisture is low and burns way too hot.

Taste: 13/20 Great smell and taste. Too bad the overall experience is diminished by hot burning.

Mildness: 8/10 My idea of a good smoke is a relaxing, low nicotine session. Therefore, the milder the better.

This blend is quite surprisingly light colored ribbon with some strands being platinum blonde/near white. The other ribbons range from red to orange, brown. There are sparse flecks and chunks of Latakia. There is a sweet alcoholic fruity plum topping that is quite reminiscent of grapes or tart cherry when smoked. This smokes and tastes like a burley centric blend. The Latakia is near undetectable but serves to stiffen up the burley and give some backbone to the smoke. There is a nice sweet perfumey quality to the room note and sidestream. A simple and mild blend. While I am glad to have tried it, I will not be buying this again.

Also…this blend,as is common with Sutliff produced tobacco, DUSTY.

Edward G Robinson Mixture - Date 1/29/22 - 9.28 am, snowy outside with a temp of 19 degrees. Drinking some peppermint coffee - Tin has a date of 9/29/21 and will be jarred after first smoke.

Tin note - Perhaps Fruity and Whisky scented. Kind of sweet.

Texture - I would say this is a goldilocks texture not really moist and not crunchy dry.

Dry draw - The Whisky comes through or at least that is what I think it is.

Char light - Quick and kind of ashy on first draws.

True light - Took very quickly

Smoke notes - This blend stayed lit nicely. Most of the flavor I got from the first ¼ of the bowl was nutty. Not unpleasant but not really knocking my socks off either. It produced a nice creamy smoke. As the bowel progressed I did get some salty notes? Another time a hint of chocolate and even a hint of some licorice perhaps, I did not specifically note the latakia.

I will revisit this blend at a later date and give it another go. Currently I would give it a 2 out of 4 star rating. Its kind of middle of the road smoke for me so far

In the tin, this blend has the distinct aroma of dried plums. Inhaling a little deeper, there's a hint of fermentation; a slight vinegar-like quality that reminds me of McClelland's red Virginias, but without the overwhelming scent of ketchup. Moisture level is not as bad as some aromatics. That is to say, unlike others I've tried, I'm not left wondering if someone cased this in pomade.

Loading is fairly straightforward, but lighting it took a few matches. This would likely be improved with some airing out. My first thought on getting this lit was, "why do I keep trying aromatics?" I don't get anything distinct from this blend. The Latakia? Can't taste it. The Burleys? No joy. What I did get was the impression that some cruel bastard set fire to my taste buds. I can only surmise that if I had foolishly smoked this in a conventional pipe, my tongue would have been left begging for its life, and then mercifully shot.

I gave up about halfway through the bowl, and went searching for water. When I came back, I decided to give it another match and I was surprised to find flavor...

...what flavor it was, I couldn't tell you and it's irrelevant anyway since it was short lived. As the rest of the bowl progressed, the heat was somewhat diminished, but the flavor fell into that "hot smoke" category under which every aromatic I've tried tends to fall; a sort of, can't-quite-put-a-finger-on-it-ness that leaves me wondering, "Is this even tobacco?" The smell of the bowl afterwards was similarly nondescript, if a little sour, and drawing through the pipe while empty I'd swear I had just smoked a plastic bag.

To their credit, Sutliff does not appear to have over done the casing, and I feel like someone who appreciates aromatic tobaccos would probably enjoy this blend. As for myself, when I want a burley blend, I'll reach for Old Joe Krantz, Aged Burley Flake or some other such blend where I can enjoy a full, natural tobacco taste. Edward G. Robinson's officially closes the book on aromatics for me.

I received a sample of this in my October TInSociety Box.

EGR is a blend I had not tried in the past but was on my list to get someday.

The bag/tin note was fruity. It is an easy to pack ribbon cut. It is easy to light and I get a fruit (plumish?) taste at the beginning and the end of the bowl. In the middle it seemed to be pretty ho-hum.

Not bad, but not something I'll buy again.

I bought a tin of EGR hoping to find a light aromatic to add to the rotation. When I opened the tin I smelled the light plum others have mentioned and I was eager to dive in to a bowl. For the first few puffs I did get the plum topping, but after 5 minutes or so the topping dissipated and the tobacco turned into nothingness. The base tobacco was indiscernible to my palette and I was left with a bowl of meh. I tried several more bowls and was searching for the elusive flavors that have been described by others. On several bowls, I was able to taste a very light dose of Latakia, but had to strain to find it. I got no tongue bite and the tobacco smoked cool throughout, but i see no reason to revisit the blend in the future.
