Straight Up English was Cornell & Diehl's very first Small Batch blend: An English blend done the traditional way. No topping. No added flavors. Red and bright Virginias and a healthy dose of Latakia. Straight Up.
Notes: A limited production with 17% latakia, red and bright Virginias, a pinch of white burley, and no topping.
Original Tin Copy: Straight Up English is exactly what it sounds like: an English blend done the traditional way. No topping. No added flavors. Just red and bright Virginias, a pinch of white Burley, and a healthy dose of Latakia. Straight Up.

I received a two bowl sample of the new small batch Straight Up English from C&D and I have to admit that I generally am not a fan of Burley added to my English blends. However, this is mild in nicotine strength and the White Burley went over quite nicely. It is mild to medium in flavor and even with the Latakia in a supporting role; the reported 17% is enough to make it slightly more than condimental. I found the Burley to be unobtrusive simply providing a little bit of body to the smoke. I don’t get any tang out of the red Virginias, but the combination of the red and bright Virginias is well done and make this a naturally sweet, balanced blend. While offering little in the way of complexity from start to finish, the sweet and smoky flavor carried the day for me. When new, I often find C&D blends to be a little “rough” for my personal taste. But that wasn’t the case here as there wasn’t a rough edge to be found. I really found Straight Up English to my liking and given that this is already a fairly sweet blend, I expect that Straight Up English would be a nice addition to the cellar.

Surprise a bit of pepper yet no Perique. The red Virginia's do that. I smoke English mixture mostly. The flavor, mood and thinking posture of this English is pure and needs to be tried by fellow English lovers, you'll be hooked.
