This is one of the most unique blends I've ever had the pleasure of smoking. The version called Mixture Monster III is NOT the same in flavor or in quality. I purchased a few tins of the 3rd version to find the date labels on the tin bottoms looked to be taken off with a blade and reissued as newer dates (maybe they simply re-dated old tins from year 2 to sell off the unsold stock). I have a half tin of this remaining and for the life of me I cannot tell you what makes it so enjoyable. It's a slow smoker's blend. I use it to further my adventures in pacing myself with milder tobaccos. You cannot go through a bowl with a rapid cadence or else you will simply hate it. After the initial flavor starts, the casing drops off rapidly to a simple, yet strange blend of Virginias. Is it a great October blend? Maybe not - but it can be enjoyed during any season of the year. I hope C&D finds a way to make the casings more lasting and flavorable and bring this back for 2019.

Cornell & Diehl - Mixture Monster II.
Funky tin art, mine's the Phantom! The mixture itself has been cut coarsely, with the coarsest pieces being the black Cavendish. It's the apples which lead in the tin-note. The moisture's good.
This would be better if the apples weren't present. The chocolate, caramel, and Cavendish tobaccos form a smooth, sweet, rich flavour, but are let down by the top-note of bitter apples. The apples aren't so strong as to completely cartelize and rule the smoke, but there's just enough sourness from them to reduce the rating. It can bite bad if strained, but on the plus side it burns cool and doesn't need much attention.
Nicotine: mild. Room-note: pleasant.
Shame about the apples! Due to them it's only somewhat recommended:
Two stars.
