John Cotton John Cotton's Number 1 Mild (re-release)
(3.13)
John Cotton’s Number 1 is a light, Virginias-forward blend, seasoned with fragrant Orientals and just enough latakia for a flavorful experience.
Notes: John Cotton's No. 1 is a light and refreshing English blend made of matured and bright Virginias, select, small-leaf Orientals and latakia. It's ideal in the morning or as an all-day type of blend. The subtle interplay of the Orientals and latakia are supported by the mellow sweetness of the Virginias The blend has been reconstructed through research and sampling of vintage tins, which triggered blender Russ Ouellette's memories of having smoked the blend in the seventies. For a taste of a traditional, light latakia blend with a great history, give John Cotton's No. 1 a try.

This is the first JC blend I've ever tried. I think this is a great blend. It is very fragrant out of the tin and has near perfect consistency. I taste the Latakia first, then the Virginia, the Orientals are an afterthought. What comes across is perfect balance. This has great smoking characteristics. It's neither too hot or cold, burns to ash, doesn't require more than one relight, if that, and it doesn't really bite unless you puff incessantly on it. The problem for me is that the flavor is so nice and the experience is so inoffensive that I do puff incessantly. Can't get too carried away. This is smokable right out of the tin. I have found it doesn't last too long in a pouch, so there is a window of opportunity before it turns plain and loses flavor. But when you get it right, this is phenomenal. No nicotine "hit" that I could detect. I was going to nitpick because I usually prefer bolder flavors, and I'd give this three stars. But in this case the description is exactly what you get, and it is well done. Four stars. I will be sampling other JC blends.

I'll keep this short, I never smoked the original, but this one is not destined for greatness. The latakia is nonexistent , the Virginias might just as well be also, as they lack sweetness. The Orientals burn hot and flavorless. Overall a very hot burning, flavorless smoke. Won't buy again, almost a one star

Tin note of sour, spices and mild smoky. Tobacco is yellowish tan ribbon with a little brown and a smidgen of dark brown/black mixed in. Moisture content is good, though some want to dry it out a bit. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and consistent/inconsistent, with notes of herbal sweet, spice, tangy, lemon grass, mildly acidic, wood, bready, floral, orange peel, musty fermented vegetation, dry sour, mildly spicy, incense, a tart citrus zesty background note, and a moderate peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Oriental/Turkish supporting. Latakia is supporting from afar. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
