Peterson Irish Dew

(2.48)
The Peterson Irish Dew is a new luxury mixture of well-matured Virginia and toasted burley tobaccos with whiskey and blossom fruit undertones. The sweet hint of vanilla and touch of chocolate arising from the toasted burley give this tobacco an exceptional finish. The blend is pressed into cakes and rubbed, enhancing the natural aroma of the tobacco.

I loved it, it reminded me of MacBaren Virgina No1, since it's so sweet and smooth earthy and woody. You should rub and dry it, otherwise it's not as good as it should be. Have patience and it will reveal itself. It reminds me of hay and a burning campfire out in the wild. I love it as a day to day tobacco. Don't use a filtered pipe if you want to enjoy this.

Of all the new pouches offerings from Peterson, I was especially intrigued by Irish Dew. So this is the only one I bought. To be honest, from reading its description, I was expecting a heavily cased aromatic, similar to the tinned ones. To my surprise, breaking the seal revealed a very subtle whiskey and chocolate aroma that was very pleasant to the nose. To discern the blossom fruit casing, I had to inhale deeply; and, even then, I could barely make it out. Irish Dew presents you with a long cut tobacco of the partially rubbed - out flake variety, from golden to light brown in colour. Its moisture level made it perfect for packing right away - which I did: I packed my pipe right there and now. It burned well, didn't smoke hot and never bit my tongue. It certainly is Burley forward, but with a fair proportion of Virginias. The taste was of tobacco, discreet fruitiness, chocolate, and a faint hint of whiskey. When I reached the last third of the bowl, Irish Dew became a bit sweeter but it was never too sweet. The nicotine was enough to prevent me from reaching out, once I was done my pipeful, for another pipe and pack something stronger to make up. It smoked dry until the end. I am pleasantly surprised by Irish Dew and will buy more with great pleasure. I really think it's a good tobacco and its quality was evident to me. 2.5 stars.

Well...I can pen a bit more positive review on Irish Dew than I did for Connemara Black. When I opened the pouch I was greeted with that grassy, new mowed hay aroma. Sweet and grassy.... which spells Virginia. The tobacco is a nice broken flake. Rich medium to light brown and dark yellow. I did not smell any chocolate, vanilla, whiskey or fruit. Nor did I taste any of these. The pouch came fresh from the B&M and the moisture was just right for my taste. It packed great. I did a charring light and tamped once. Halfway down I re-tamped and lit again...and that took me to the bottom of the bowl. Nice white gray ash. No dottle. Very little to no bite on the tongue but the bowl burned a bit hot. So I would recommend a very slow puff. The taste was fairly enjoyable. I do not have a lot of experience with Virginias. This blend reminds me of "Skandinavik Full Aroma" which I really enjoy! I don't taste anything but the Virginia. I could not even pick up any Burley either. I love "PA Choice" so I am familiar with Burley. I get a kind of a soapy flavor...floral in a way. That's about it. But it is flavourful and smooth. It is a tad strong if you inhale it...but very full bodied and satisfying if you exhale thru the nose. I do see some cheap squiggley Virginia ribbon in the mix...which gives it a bit of a strong cigarette taste and smell at first...but it dissipates quickly. The only reason I say this is because I used to smoke cigarettes...Marlboro's to be exact. But all said...I liked it. I would probably not buy it again...but I don't feel I wasted my money. I will finish the pouch. Unlike Connemara Black...which I threw out with the weeks refuse. I think a true Virginia lover would enjoy it as a novelty smoke. Nothing spectacular but worth investigating. As we all know...as it goes with us fellow pipe smokers..".ya never know!" But I must say that I am becoming increasingly wary of pouched tobacco. I believe I will stick to tins. And even then there is no guarantee!!

This is a very mild aromatic if that is what you have to call it. The whisky and fruit toppings are so mild that they are almost unnoticeable, and for the most part, all I get are the natural sweet flavors of the Virginia tobaccos. I would say that this is an ok aromatic and I would call this an ok Virginia burley blend, but it is not stellar in either category. As for the tobacco, it appears to be a quality Virginia burley blend with no twiggy or hard bits mixed in with it. It packs easily due to the cut and takes a light well, as the moisture level is almost perfect. This is not a gloopy or wet aromatic by any means. Flavor profile was again mild on the aromatic front and mainly seemed to me to be that of sweet Virginias with hay like or grassy notes being the predominant flavor. I was not able to really detect any of the nutty flavors usually associated with burley tobaccos during my smoke, which leads me to believe that this is a Virginia forward blend. The room note was described to me by those in the room as slightly sweet and grassy. All in all, a decent smoke, but a hard one to place in a specific category, for me at least. A decent tobacco that you may want to sample for yourself if you want a light aromatic with more of the Virginia flavors. Remember that all reviews are subjective, and everyone will experience the tobacco differently

I bought this because I was intrigued by the abundance of flavors listed on the pouch, but when smoked I didn't notice any of the flavors listed. It was boring to smoke and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Took a chance on this since we are talking about a Peterson aromatic. My experience tells me that Peterson should really focus on non aromatic blends, since the difference between how well I like each is like night and day. With that being said, I must admit that this is more of a non aro than aromatic because of the near total lack of whatever additives one can detect in this blend. It isn't until near the bottom of the bowl that I can actually taste anything that has been added to this blend, outside of some very good quality tobaccos. If you are looking for an aromatic with full flavorings, please move along this isn't the tobacco you're looking for. Like I say above, the tobaccos used in this blend are a good quality and you should get some compliments on the room note. Other than that, it is a middle of the road blend for me. Overall, may be worth a try if you like aromatics that are not dripping with excessive flavorings.

Remember back in grade school when you would make spitballs? Yes, this tastes just like chewing on a piece of loose-leaf paper you had in your Trapper-Keeper.

Flat, boring, flavorless.

I don't know what else to say, except no.

After my first disappointing Peterson (Connoisseur's), this was already a clear improvement. It's an aromatic but a moderate one, with a good, solid burley base giving it a nice dark chocolate/cocoa tang which is already very noticeable in the pouch tone. Long strands of hardish flake mean that some rubbing by hand is in order to build a proper bowl, and a charring light or two are probably needed; once it gets going though it produces a very satisfying, slow-burning, thick and wholesome smoke a little bit on the strong side. So satisfying in fact that I noticed that I need to smoke markedly smaller bowls of this compared to many other brands, making a pouch last perhaps 1.5 times as long as usual, which actually makes this a rather economical brand for me, even considering the higher prices of Petersons.

Not really a regular brand for me, but will definitely be buying again when I get the chance. Complements a cup of dark-roast coffee, dark cocoa or strong black tea very well.

I've been rather taken by this blend. My experience is that it is essentially a very mild ready rubbed flake. Nothing powerful or demanding attention. Possibly even bland. Smokes fairly cool. Could even be an "all day" or "go to" but I'm a fairly steady smoker and a Peterson pouch is a bit pricey for that for my budget. I don't tend to pick it as my "end of the day, savor the bowl" smoke. If I were out for a day and was going to put one pouch of tobacco in my pocket to get me through the day, yes, this is a top contender.

My rating system: 1 - F(ailure) 2 - questionable 3 - Acceptable/Decent Smoke 4 - A #3 that I really like. 5 - Ambrosia (The stuff you dream of or read about. "Old Toby" or "Longbottom Leaf". I gave 5 stars to Capstan because I like it and Tolkien smoked it so it's probably the benchmark for the fictional leaf.)

Really torn apart about this blend... I was excited to try it and a fellow pipe smoker send me a pouch. Now that I have smoked several bowls throughout the last days I still don't get too excited over it...

The pouch note is quite tobacco-y with a floral flavoring in the back. Not too much of the Whiskey detectable, maybe a hint if you look for it! Chocolate and Vanilla? Nope... not detectable to me! But the Virginias give a nice grassy fresh aroma. Burley in the back.

In the pipe the tobacco is in forefront. Fresh, grassy, slightly citrusy Virginias enhanced by the smooth, full-bodied Burleys that also contribute some earth and minor nuttiness, maybe a hint of chocolate, but that may come from the topping. The floral-essence is present in every puff, but very mild and smooth. The Whiskey isn't detectable at all to me. If you like floral toppings and a nice Va/Bur, you'll might like this. But even then.. it's not per se "flat", but not really full-bodied nor complex. An easy smoke for tiems you don't want to mind the tobacco too much.

2,5/4 stars, as it's not bad, but neither really impressing!

Peterson - Irish Dew.

The 'mixture' appears, to me, to comprise mainly shag cut and broken flake pieces. As this was from a sample bag I'm unsure of the water content from a fresh tin, this is more than adequate though. The only aroma from the added flavours I can identify in the unlit note is a floral one. There may be some of the alcohol present but I could be confusing that with the floral piquancy I get.

On to the smoke: Like the unlit aroma, the only extra flavours I get are a floral one with a delicate whiskey touch. The whiskey is a lot less ambiguous in the smoke's taste though; I'm more than sure It's not any of the floral nuances getting mistaken; it seems certain to me that this taste is from whiskey.

It also seems, to me, that the floral/whiskey note becomes stronger at about the halfway point. I'd describe it as mild to medium to begin with, leaning more towards medium to strong after the first half.

The cocoa and chocolate miss me completely; I can't identify any of them, at all.

The taste is okay at first but after a while it becomes too sharp and somewhat harsh for my palate. Personally, I think Peterson have missed a trick by not adding some Black Cavendish to calm this down and give the vanilla flavour some backup.

The best feature of this is the room note; lots of character from both the additives and tobacco's. However it creates a smog so don't smoke it near any anti-pipers!

I would highly rate this if the flavour stayed as it was at the beginning for the duration of the smoke. That doesn't happen though; it becomes harsh, sharp and acrid. This reduces it to only two stars.

Somewhat recommended.
