Peterson Irish Dew

(2.48)
The Peterson Irish Dew is a new luxury mixture of well-matured Virginia and toasted burley tobaccos with whiskey and blossom fruit undertones. The sweet hint of vanilla and touch of chocolate arising from the toasted burley give this tobacco an exceptional finish. The blend is pressed into cakes and rubbed, enhancing the natural aroma of the tobacco.

After my first disappointing Peterson (Connoisseur's), this was already a clear improvement. It's an aromatic but a moderate one, with a good, solid burley base giving it a nice dark chocolate/cocoa tang which is already very noticeable in the pouch tone. Long strands of hardish flake mean that some rubbing by hand is in order to build a proper bowl, and a charring light or two are probably needed; once it gets going though it produces a very satisfying, slow-burning, thick and wholesome smoke a little bit on the strong side. So satisfying in fact that I noticed that I need to smoke markedly smaller bowls of this compared to many other brands, making a pouch last perhaps 1.5 times as long as usual, which actually makes this a rather economical brand for me, even considering the higher prices of Petersons.

Not really a regular brand for me, but will definitely be buying again when I get the chance. Complements a cup of dark-roast coffee, dark cocoa or strong black tea very well.

I've been rather taken by this blend. My experience is that it is essentially a very mild ready rubbed flake. Nothing powerful or demanding attention. Possibly even bland. Smokes fairly cool. Could even be an "all day" or "go to" but I'm a fairly steady smoker and a Peterson pouch is a bit pricey for that for my budget. I don't tend to pick it as my "end of the day, savor the bowl" smoke. If I were out for a day and was going to put one pouch of tobacco in my pocket to get me through the day, yes, this is a top contender.

My rating system: 1 - F(ailure) 2 - questionable 3 - Acceptable/Decent Smoke 4 - A #3 that I really like. 5 - Ambrosia (The stuff you dream of or read about. "Old Toby" or "Longbottom Leaf". I gave 5 stars to Capstan because I like it and Tolkien smoked it so it's probably the benchmark for the fictional leaf.)

Very fruity smell from pouch and very appealing. Reminded me of Troost Aromatic from a freshly opened tin. Medium brown ribbon packed nicely in the pouch. Loading and lighting was easy without problems keeping lit. Not much of a taste - mild tobacco, no detectable flavors as per the description. However, if you want something mild with a pleasant room note this would serve the purpose and I can't see many non-smokers complaining here. Irish Flake is my number one favorite/daily go to (smoking several bowls daily). The only similarity is the word "Irish"; same with Peterson's Irish Mixture (formerly Irish Whiskey), and I didn't care for that one much. With Irish Dew, there is a pleasantly sweet, but non descript side stream which I found pleasant. Recommended for when you want something mild ie, a set-it-and-forget-it smoke.

Peterson's Irish Dew is one of the Peterson pouch offerings like Aran which is another decent blend. Comes as 40g which is smaller than most other pouchs and can be had for around $6 making it not the cheapest pou h blend but not expensive either.

The appearance is broken flake well rubbed but obviously not ribbon or any other cut for that matter.

Flavor is light and mild with a citrusy Virginia twang. The floral notes are only slightly apparent and not obvious by any means. Any other flavorings are very light as well.

Overall this is a lightly flavored blend that is in a similar family as Royal Yacht or other tobacco forward slightly flavored blends. Irish Dew does have a tendency to bite a bit if pushed which prevents 4 stars plus there are better options in this genre IMO but i did think it was worth picking up a second pouch just in case it gets discontinued like Wild Atlantic and Comerica Park.

This was one of the first real experiences where I really tasted the Virginia tobacco in a blend. The only other Virginia Burley blends I had smoked a lot of before was Half n Half which I enjoy but the heavy coriander topping hides the Virginia in that blend. In my opinion the Virginia outshines the burley but they both add to the overall satisfying taste. I got a lot of floral notes during the first half of the bowl and then more of the the citrus and hay of the Virginia came along, while the cocoa/nutty flavor of the burley played a minor part but showed itself more so in the last half the bowl. I really enjoyed the flavor of this tobacco. The tobacco itself was the perfect moisture level requiring few relights and left no moisture in the bowl. Never had tongue bite with this blend and it smoked cool all the way through. It was great considering it was a cheaper pouch tobacco, would definitely buy again. 3.5 stars
