Robert McConnell Scottish Cake

(3.27)
Scottish Cake - this ready rubbed flake is a great favorite for young and old. Dark brown in its color the seasoned pieces may directly be tampered into the pipe or even lightly rubbed become to a Honeydew. Produced from a mixture of Eastern Carolina, Kentucky and Middle Belt, that are pressed for several weeks. A very popular tobacco and very slow in its burning.
Notes: From the Kohlhase & Kopp website: "Hand rubbed flake of dark Virginia and Kentucky with a pinch of perique."

A pretty unique mixture of tasty, solid Virginias and the right amount plus a pinch of Kentucky. A slight anise casing will probably put off somebody looking for a classic VaPer away, but if you keep your mind open you're likely to enjoy this tobacco from time to time.

Like I've said, this is pretty unique and I couldn't compare it to any particular blend, although I think that two parts of Hal O' the Wynd and one part of Ashton Type 4 mixed together and left to rest for a couple of months should come very close.

A good tobacco, with a solid sweet but not cloying taste. The Virginia base stands out, quite similar in flavour to Marlin Flake (honeyed, flowey) but with a slightly smokier and woodier note (probably the Kentucky).

A bit wet in the tin, but it smokes well, slow and usually dry.

Nothing particularly striking, but a solid, well-behaved all-day smoke.

Tin note: dried fruit

Smokes well, no tongue bite, few relights. Tastes like dried fruit and bread at the beginning. Changes to sweet woods. Spicy (from the perique) - little bit too much but this is my first encounter with perique, so maybe it is not for me.

It's rare I like a blend right away. Usually a blend has to burn through several bowls, or even a full tin, before I succumb to its charms. Scottish Cake is an immediate thumbs up! The tobaccos weave together well, the Kentucky is solid, marginally up front. The VA lurks right behind; the Perique is present, but only a minor player. One further observation; this blend is not a broken flake as described above; it's a pressed ribbon cut. I really enjoyed this one. Another K&K blend, good job!

I broke-in a new pipe with this blend: my Ser Jacopo Geppetto billiard with a tall stack bowl. This pipe probably helped; I'll find out if this is true when I use a different style pipe.

Good blend! Great pipe!

Keep on pipin'

I was very impressed when I first smoked this mixture but the more I smoke the more I get bored. Let me say that the quality is good but I have to say that even not mentioned I detect some kind of sweet topping, and I don’t like flavored tobacco. I smoked it in many briars and the best results was with “neutral” briars (Peterson, Parker and duca bog oak) while with “sweet” italian briars (from Calabria and Tuscany) it became too sweet and with strong nicotine flavor.

From a sample

Cake was presented as a kind of broken flake to me. Easy to pack.

Taste was of a quality VaPer. Pretty strong on the Perique, actually stronger than I wished for at the time. Other condiments were undetectable to my peasant senses.

I have a couple tins of it I'll be happy to crack when the mood strikes.

Being a huge fan of Scottish Flake , I wanted to try this also . I have had this tin for about a year and when I bought it from the local tobacconist he said it had several years of age on it . They were having a customer appreciation day and broke out their cellar . Opening the tin the Perique scent came out immediately of figs and raisons . There is more than a pinch of Perique in my tin as this smokes like a vapor . The Kentucky seems more like a pinch . The Virginias are bready and a little grassy . There is some kind of sweet topping here also . It is quite sweet indeed. Rum and a sugar sauce maybe ? It’s a good smoke and the perique does get a little spicy past the halfway point. I do prefer the Scottish Flake version better though. The flake is smoother and not as sweet . 4 stars for the flake and 3 for this concoction. Did I mention this is sweet ? Lol It could be a plum topping .

A quality blend but flavor too mild for my taste. Agree with the many reviews that describe this as a pleasant but unspectacular smoke. Decent nicotine levels and nominal bite even for an aggressive smoker like me. Enjoyed the nose more than the taste. Couldn't detect much Perique, which was disappointing. May be more well suited to a straight VA smoker.

Nice mix, smoke it slowly as it burns if you puff to hard. It is a long run tobacco to keep around.

A good tobacco which don't bite while still sweet.

Perique is in, just in the right amount .
