Wessex Curly Block

(3.94)
Translated from the German language: This pipe tobacco unicum was made of high quality Virginia grades and a breath [of] Perique. The characteristic form get the "round" block by a form in which the tobacco was put. For at least 6 weeks the mixture rests in the press, ferments gently after and reveals the multilayered taste nuances. After the aging period the broad rope [is] divided into blocks at 250 grams each. At smoking the connoisseur can expect wonderful, natur[al] sweet notes. Perique enriches the mixture by spicyness, strength, and discreet fruity flavours. The tobacco is of middle strength and full flavour.
Notes: According to the Heinrichs family this used to be made by Mac Baren, yet these days is produced by STG (Scandinavian Tobacco Group) and imported by K&K (Kohlhase & Kopp). It's currently sold under the Wessex brand name.

I held off, thinking it was too strong. In fact, it is smoother than Special Curly for my palate. Perique is expertly formulated and does not make me sneeze or eyes water. Knife prep didn't work out for me and I unconventionally use scissors, shredding finer ribbons off the roll end, shag style. This cut results in a one light char and burns in a non fussy manner, averaging one relight at mid bowl and an occasional follow up light near the finish. I am getting a subtle note of apricot periodically, but that may be a Perique back note.

This blend has high nicotine content. Preferably I smoke it when I want to smoke only 1 bowl in a day and it's sufficiently fulfills my need which is certainly not the nicotine need.

The Virginias are matured well during 3 years of aging. Perique is so strong that sometimes gives a headache-like pressure to my head. I like that feeling for 10 15 minutes, after the feeling disappears. The blend is very well balanced, not easy to cut and make it ready for packing, yet the preparation process is enjoyable, cutting it with a razor sharp knife on some nice wood surface etc. The ambiance turns out to be nice and slow.

As I tasted in Dan Tobacco's Salty Dogs, I tasted some salty, black peppery perique together with nice brown matured Virginias. It's worth giving a try just because of acquiring the experience of making this stuff ready for smoking. Apart from that, my course of smoking was always more than enjoyable.

After having sampled my "sausage" several times over the past year, I have come to the conclusion that this is a top notch VaPer, but does require a bit of experimentation to really fully enjoy it. Luckily, it comes in an 8 oz. block, so you have plenty of material to work with! First off, the raw aroma when you open the package is mouth watering. Figgy, bready goodness! Yes, like the others have posted, you will want a sharp knife or other apparatus to slice it thin. From there, the method I have come to use most often is to cross cut it and rub out. Then let it dry for an hour, at least. I find that this avoids all the relights everyone complains about. If you dry it out thoroughly, it also allows for a proper packing of the bowl and for me, this works the best. It smokes cool with no bite, but take care to puff gently to fully enjoy the subtleties, of this luxurious blend. Also take the time for a few retro hales, as the Perique will tickle your nostrils in a most pleasant way. Some have compared it to other VaPers. For me, it stands alone, as one of the finest and definitely one of the most unique. I am biased, as I love the pageantry and preparation, it just adds so much to the experience. The Nic hit is strong, but not overwhelming. This is one I do not reach for often, and I would say by the small dent I have put in my log so far in the past year, and even sharing a bit with friends, this 8 oz will go a long way. Very much worth the money, as this is a very dense 8 oz. Many happy bowls to be enjoyed. As far as aging, I would say that it has improved in the past year, but it was just fine straight out of the package. Cheers!

First off, Perique is usually not friendly to me. When I got this Block, I sliced off 4 coins to smoke and the rest went to the cellar.

I smoked one coin. a little thick, since my knife was new, and didn't know how it would slice. put that chunky slice into my Nording Valhalla 605, and combusted..

Its dreamy! so good... Pricey, but worth it! I can only imagine what this will become in a couple years!

WOW!! Was my only thought upon receiving this in the mail. I got 1 250 gram rope ( it's really more of a dense thick sausage) it's beautiful to behold and smell. I get the standard smells of quality VA w a dash of perique, very faint hints of burleys trade mark cocoa, and something else, some kind of very slight topping but can't put my finger on it.

To prepare takes a bit of effort, (as this rope could be used to give someone's noggin a flogg'n it's so dense) but it's all part of the divine ritual of pipe smoking. this rope will test the sharpness or your finest steel!! My preferred method is to just push straight down HARD and the knife will cut off a chunk. At this point I either cube it up or dice the ever loving heck out of it, then gravity fill w a slight to no tamp.

This is a 5 star offering. Taste of creamy apricot at times. Nice and subtly sweet. fruit, hay, brown bread, plum, tamarind, and many others my pallet picks up but brain can't name. Many flavors are there but are to ephemeral to nail down. Has a decent amount of that beautiful alkaloid C10H14N2 or vitamin N to us layman's.

I can only imagine how a good 5 years of cellar time would improve the already perfect blend. Or maybe a dash of a good rum just to experiment w the flavor profile, but as they say "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and this definitely ain't broke.

no chance of bite, even if puffed like a bulldozer operator on speed. Although the taste will get a touch ashy. speaking of ash, this stuff leaves the finest, most powdery ash I have come across in my decade of T.A.D. It's even finer than Rattrays Red Rappore, and expect no moisture and the pipe cleaner comes out crazy clean. It's unlike anything I've experienced before.

It's a bit pricey at aroun 10$ per ounce, but you get what you pay for...usually, but in this case you get more.

Wessex Curly Block - I purchased a 4oz block sliced by Watch City Cigar . I labeled my jar 5/21 so this is the newest version of Virginia , Burley and Perique . I sliced it into coins and rubbed out . Needed dry time . The Virginias and burley compete for lead spot . The Perique is noticeable and adds a great dimension to the blend . I believe it has some fruity toppings and maybe molasses and or cocoa ? The tobacco flavors are out front though. A Vabur w/ Perique and light well done flavoring and right in my wheelhouse. It is sweet, earthy, bready and fruity and delicious. Nic is mild- medium.I think the burley lovers amongst us will enjoy . 4

Cylindrical block of 375g of pure tobacco smell after hay and molasse. Moisture was accurate, maybe higher, but do not need preparation time. Burn well even packed immediately. Taste was sweet, creamy and smoky. Do not need too much relights, no dottles at all.

Package note of spiced plumes and sugar-coated Rasins. Tobacco is tan, brown and dark brown 1.5-inch-thick rope. Moisture content is ok, though many will opt to dry it a bit. Recommend slicing with a sharp thin knife or razor and rubbing out before drying. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected, though its listed. Taste is medium and consistent, with notes of stewed dark sour plums, orange peel, spicy, dry wood, sweet grass, rich earth, spice, bread, savory, floral, hay, acidic, mildly lemony, leather, zest, mildly bitter, a tart and tangy citrus background note, and a very peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Perique supporting. Burley is listed, but I couldn't discern any. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
