D & R Tobacco Athey
(2.83)
Notes: An all Virginia tobacco. It has a complex 3 layers of flavors: an earthy plummy molasses layer, followed by a scotch/drambuie note, and finished with a light botanical topping.

D & R Tobacco - Athey.
When I opened mine I imminently noticed a difference in comparison to a lot of the D & R's I've had. It wasn't completely parched of moisture; sure, a little dry, but not crispy! I see a few coarser ribbons, as well as mid-size ones. The nose is a little floral, and slightly sweet.
The flavour? Quite nice. The floral note pairs well with the camphoraceous, fragrant, Drambuie. However, any alacrity from these gets smoothed out by the sugary molasses addition. The Virginias are mild, sweet, and not too sharp; a 'laid back' characteristic. Not too bad, eh? The taste of the smoke isn't particularly poor, but the physical attributes let it down: it burns fast, hot, and gives my tongue more than just a peck!
Nicotine: a touch more than mild. Room-note: not terrible.
Athey? Hmmmm, sadly this isn't one for my cellar. Somewhat recommended:
Two stars.

Botanical indeed, might be even floral. I have the highest respect for Mark for the quality leaf he uses and the natural approach for his blends. Just to say this will not be something i would buy more of, but the flavoring is complex and odd to say the least. The virginia is of high quality however, unless dried up some to where you get rid of some of that casing/topping you will have hard time tasting the virginia. It burns cool and priced just right, but the taste is love it or hate it indeed. Very minty if smoked fresh, may be something to indulge in when you have congested sinuses. Al janabi

I bought this tobacco several years ago through a close friend from the other side of the Pond. As a matter of fact, it’s not available in the old World. I had great expectations and as soon as it arrived I opened the big pack and smelled a nice perfume. It’s Drumbuie I thought, or mint? Loaded a medium bowl Hescheen pipe that smokes perfectly (like the majority of poor Uncle Peter pipes) and… well, I was let down! At first it was a sort of alcoholic mint, then it changed pace with a different kind of stuff. Probably it was the Drumbuie time but not so enticing and finally a boring mid-nik baccy. It was an hot summer, I thought the weather was too humid. I carried on however but at no avail. Left the big amount in a couple of jars for a maturing time. My idea was that in a cellar it would enhance its taste. I tried from now and then with large bowls but the results are always the same: not exciting. After 5+ years I still have those jars (only one half emptied). I try it well packed, loose, drinking strong Souchong tea or Espresso coffe. No way, it’s not a tobacco for my taste! I notice the quality of Virginia is good and it smokes well. Leaves just few black ashes and no humidity. Try if like, of course but I don’t think of a new order.
