Paul Olsen 3 Nuns (My Own Blend)

(3.40)
This is the "My Own Blend" version of the legendary Bell Tobacco "Three Nuns," trying to be the original VaPer version, according to the description from several Danish tobacco dealers. It should be an exact copy made from the original recipe.

The Tin is the very well known "My Own Blend" tin . 100 Gram at a prize at 25.14 Eu, and 18.09 British pounds. And 188 kr in Denmark. At opening a spicy aroma of plum and nuts reach your nose, and something deep dark , hard to descripe but very pleasant at the same time. Its the long missed Perique with its black colours melted with Virginia in a blend of Curly Cuts and a mixture. In the current Bells Three Nuns ,the number of Curly Cuts or Cat eyes seems to be in greater numbers ,and in this Tin it seems more like a Mixture Tobacco with a small amount of Cateyes , some in pure Virginia and some with the caracteristic black spot in the middle. The aroma that meets your nose is very good, allmost inviting you to fill you pipe and lit it again and again . This is the "My Own Blend" version of the legendary Bell Tobacco "Three Nuns", trying to be the original Va-per version, according to the description from several danish tobacco dealers. It should be a exact copy made from the original recipe . And what do you get for your money ? It is so many years since I have smoked the original Three Nuns , so I had some memory problems regarding what to expect. I had at this moment ,smoked the new Three Nuns for some time. And I like the Virginia/Kentucky despite the peppery feeling in my mouth and on my lips. So I lit this copy of the old recipe in my "Stanwell" pipe and what a surprise to my mouth and nose. No peppery Kentucky , just a very pleasent mild taste of good tobacco. Sweetness and a very very friendly taste wich made me , for the very first time in my pipe smoking life, a new "falling in love" with a tobacco. And in the middle of the bowl , the Perique was showing its face in full . Lots of Nicotine , wich make this Great tobacco to a "Later on the Day smoke. Dont smoke it as your morning pipe unless you prefere to feel a little morning dizziness. Wait to later on the day...and then its a very good all day tobacco. Its my new Tobacco Mistress ,thats for sure. Three Nuns from Bells in the Virginia/Kentucky version is a great smoke....But this "My Own Blend" version from the original recipe ,makes an overwhelming impression. No toungue bite , cool smoke, and only a little after taste in the mouth. And a room note that smell like good sweet tobacco.Try it out its a Great version of Three Nuns and a impressive copy of the good old long missed Virginia/Perique Tobacco

Paul Olsen - My Own Blend, 3 Nuns.

I can't pass comment on any comparisons to the original having never had it but this would be the ultimate blend for a one word review: "Perfect". However, I'll do a bit more!

Like a dummy, I'd forgot this was curly cut, I was thinking of the Bells pouch version which is ready rubbed. So, when I opened it up I was over the moon; I love curly cut tobacco. Although it's listed as curly cut, the can doesn't only contain coins, about 25-30% of the blend is made up of ribbons. I always rub any coins of tobacco but I notice that's not necessary with this; if I just sort of scrunch the coins firmly and stuff them in they light and smoke brilliantly.

On to the flavour: this is delicious! It has a noticeable Perique taste there, it's different to some VaPer's though as there's only an infinitesimal amount of sharpness to it but lots of flavour. It has the usual suspects; figs and dates but it's not aggressive nor too spicy. The Virginia provides the foundations; it tastes as though it's a high end leaf that's been used but it doesn't steal the show.

This burns at a medium speed. That, of course, depends on how diligently the tobacco is rubbed! Mine was just a little finer than folded/stuffed.

I really enjoy My Own Blend 3 Nuns so I have to highly recommend it.

Four stars.
