Frederick Tranter Scholar's Mixture
(3.50)
A mixture of burley and Virginia with a subtle quantity of perique and cavendish. A smooth, flavourful smoke that's mild in strength with a slight aroma.

Frederick Tranter-Scholar's Mixture. I think I've stumbled across a little gem here!
In the pouch the mixture looks quite rugged, there's one or two coarse broken flakes in there. Smelling it is a very raw and natural deal. It oozes classic nuances of 'old school' tobacco. It should have been around in the 1800's!!
When I've got my pipe filled and initiate the smoking I notice a small problem: Because the blend is fairly coarse it needs a good flame to get it burning. I try my zippo but that's not powerful enough so I have to use a jet flame to get it going. Once the burning has begun it gives quite a fair/non-demanding burn that only needs sporadic maintenance.
I enjoy the smoke, it's got a taste that's pretty full. It's not too much but all the different kinds of tobacco really give something to the blend.
I find that the Burley takes the strongest position. Then it's the spicy/fruity Perique and Virginia with the Cavendish being the lightest throughout.
I have to disagree with the description where it states it's mild in strength. I find it a lot better suited to the category 'medium to strong'. But nicotine amount it subjective I guess!
The smoke doesn't bite me any but the temperature can be a touch warm if it's strained. For optimum enjoyment I sip gentler.
Scholar's Mix has a very small amount of low points but for me they don't reduce it from four stars!
Highly recommended.

I am fairly new to smoking, but in my limited experience I would say this is a stronger tobacco than the "mild" description. It can be a bit bitey but I think that's the perique, which I havent smoked before. This was recommended to me, and at first I didn't think I would finish the 25g I bought, but now it has grown on me and I will be going back for more.
