Rattray Jocks Mixture

(2.85)
A very dark and full-bodied, mild mixture of surprising flavor and very slow burning with exactly the necessary touch of latakia supported by a good portion of cavendish.

I was never a fan of the jocks in high school, so it was with a little trepidation that I decided to get into the mix with them. I wasn't sure of what to make of a 'cutting mixture', but I was willing to try it on it's own merits and of course with some tobacco friends.

Opening the little Pringles can let out a gasp of mild English and Virginia, that was neither strong or trying to outmaneuver the other. The Latakia added a nose tingle with some light spice. The long cut ribbons had a great bounce and moisture; packing was a breeze. The smoke was a hint heavier than medium on the nicotine radar and blended into a general heft of a smoke, without much Virginia nuttiness, nor charcoal I would associate with Latakia.

On its own it was neither here nor there and felt like a starting point for a deep no frills smoker. When used to 'cut; other blends it tended to add some heft to the mix and subdue any Aromatics, though why you would buy a higher end product to do this is beyond me.

Update: Well, I’ve been too enthusiastic with this one at first. After a second attempt with a 100 gr. tin I’d say it gets somewhat acrid and chemical, when dries. Two stars

What a pleasant surprise! My tin was fresh (bought in december), none the less my impressions are very similar to those described by SteelCowboy which has smoked a long aged one. Jocks is a thousand miles away from a generic Va/Lat : not the usual grassy-peaty bomb but a well balanced mix of mature Virginias and a pinch of spicy-smoky Latakia along with a quality Black Cavendish which adds sweetness and roundness; flavors of good tobacco with a sort of BBQ sauce twist. A pleasure from the top to the bottom of the bowl, enjoyable at every time of the day.
Pipe Used: some Mastro de Paja

I originally received a small sample of this blend with a tobacco order. I was absolutely floored by this blend and immediately ordered a tin from the company that gave me the sample. (See, it does work!). After receiving the tin, I opened it a loaded up a bowl. This was no where near as good as the sample. I have since tried the blend in different pipes, packs and stages of aging/humidity to no affect. I will base this review on a mixture of both experiences. I think it is possible that my sample was from the bulk source rather than a tin. I will have to order some bulk Jock's to find out.

Visual: Lots of greasy black ribbon cut with peices of brown to black broken flake mixed it. it looks sticky in the tin.

Texture: It is sticky! this stuff has so much humectant that I could probably leave it open for two months and it would still not be dry! I don't recall my sample feeling like this.

Pack / Pipe: I usually found myself rubbing this blend out to seperate the broken flake peices and to "unclod" the tobacco. I then pressed some of the blend into a number of shallow pipes, (ie: Israeli Alpha 1/4 bent apple, a Comoy Rockroot Pot, an Ascorti 1/8 bent squash etc...) The tobacco does not lend itself to my usual trickle tampp method of loading, so a light hand needed to be used to have a successful smoke.

Lighting / Burn: This stuff often took 3-4 matches to get going, and seemed to go out within 5 - 10 puffs. However after the first relight, it often smoked to the bottom needed one or no additional matches.

1st 3rd: After getting the tobacco lit, I am rewarded with a sweet and somewhat tangy smoke that has just an afterthought of Latakia taste. I picked up a lot more of the Latakia taste when I smelled the smoke rolling out of the bowl. This tobacco is in no hurry to fnd the bottom of the bowl, so I had to make sure not to rush my tamping.

2nd 3rd: The tobacco is burning nicely now, and tends to get the bowl a bit warm, however, it is not really burning my tongue. Any tongue irritation is from the humdifying chemical applied to the tobacco. Once again this is a slow burning tobacco.

Final 3rd: The ash on top of the burning tobacco is loose and rolls around the top of the cherry. The final third still has some sweetness and that tang. (The tang is not necessarily VA tang, and again may have something to do with the humectant)

Notes: I will hesitate to order this as a tinned blend again. Hopefully my bulk order in the future will prove to be the same as my original sample experience. If it is, then I will smoke Jocks Mixture regularly. Until then...

K&K is a vexing pipe tobacco manufacturer. On the one hand they make some of the finest tobaccos imo. Their stoved Virginias are superb, and their Va blends are also top notch. But I cannot fathom for the life of me what is going on with their labelling. Either they have some real quality control issues or they invent whatever the hell they please for their product descriptions.

My tin of Jock's for example contains no latakia. What it does have is perique. Which is bonkers because I couldn't find perique in my Marlin Flake either. 'Hand Blended' it says on the tin. Perhaps K&K need to move the different black leaf tobaccos further apart in the blending room. Maybe whoever was responsible for blending the batch I received was in training for Oktoberfest.

So I can't say that my tin, which is most certainly labelled 'Jock's Mixture' is actually supposed to be that. So take some caution with my review: it may not properly indicate what Jock's is supposed to be.

What has been in my pipe and is in my pipe as I type, is definitely without Latakia. It is VaPer of sorts. I cannot say whether the sweetness is Cavendish derived (a visual inspection shows only the one type of dark leaf in my tin, and it is unflavoured and vaguely sweet) or whether the Va is naturally sweet or some sweetener has been added. But gently sweet it is.

There is a decent amount of plum and pepper and spice, particularly towards the end of the bowl. All in all it's a very good smoke, a strong 3 bordering on 4 stars if it were not completely different to what was expected, indeed promised, by the product description. As it is I have to give it a 2.

This is not bad but did not really grab my attention. The virginia plays dominant role in this one with the cavendish and latakia supporting. The cavendish in this does give it a nutty burley kind of flavor that is in good balance with the virginia. The latakia is very light in this and is not at all assertive. This burns a little on the warmer side for me and as one reviewer mentioned I recieved the same lip tingle with out the bite, not a perique kind of tingle. This is not bad but not something I would look for when purchasing blends. Worth a try.

Jocks Mixture is extra-light in the Latakia department, so if you?re looking for a way to try Latakia without it being ?over the top? this may be a good choice.

The Cavendish and Va intermingle well for a bit of complexity. Latakia adds flavor as a condiment. Overall the effect is a cool and relaxing smoke. This would be a good one for working in the yard

This is a mild English, for me too mild. All the components stay relatively subtle and nothing stands out, although it gets a little richer at the half bowl mark. There's an ever present sweetness and tanginess. Burns very very easy. This might be a great blend to get started with Latakia blends or in general for beginning pipe smokers.
