Cult Abacus
(3.00)
Introducing the next entry in the Cult pipe tobacco lineup - Cult Abacus. After the incredible success of Blood Red Moon last year, people were wondering what Cult would do as a follow up. The answer is Abacus, a smooth, easy smoking blend of especially mild burleys, zesty Virginias and steamed black cavendish with a soft and warm combination of cocoa, vanilla and hazelnut for a mellow, intriguing flavor and a crowd-pleasing room note.

A very nice smoke. Good flavor, smokes really well. Just a really nice tobacco. If you have tried BRM you will notice the same quality smoke. Can't wait to try their next flavor.

I received a sample of this in my TinSociety.com box.
This to me is probably a great tobacco to have with a morning cup of coffee if you like aromatics.
The taste I got was cocoa/coffee with a def hazelnut topping. It burned cool in my radiator with the normal amount of moisture/goop trapped in the tank. The tobacco seems good quality and the moisture level was fine without drying from my sample.
I'm not sure I'd buy more when my sample is up, but it is a good blend.

Bought thus upon a lightning quick finish of Blood Red Moon, a fantastic unique aro that presented it's flavoring with clarity and depth.
Not so much of that here, specifically I believe in the interaction between the vanilla and the hazelnut, which muddled up the works; where BRD allowed an orchestral dance between the Virginias and the cherry, this blend is akin to 90's grunge - especially the gobbly-gook of lyric that genre displayed. This Toby is too mixed up flavor-wise for me too get a liking for it...and it burns through so fast I initially thought I'd only halfway packed it. That was very odd.
Gonna work through their other blends just in case there is another Blood Red Moon out there, but won't be checking this aro out any further.

Very moist out of the tin. Above average tin note, somewhat enjoyable smoke with nutty highlights, but the real story here came after the smoke when I ran a pipe cleaner through my Kaywoodie Drinkless. It took two cleaners to get all the goop out. At first, I thought I forgot to clean it out after my last use, so I lit up again and then cleaned it out afterwards and got the same result. In some of my more traditional pipes, there would have been gurgling! Nothing unique about smoking this, and it might be best to let it dry out before smoking.

I once had my knickers blown off by the sheer topping power of Cult's Blood Red Moon, so I braced myself opening this tin... surprisingly, it was a run-of-the-mill Aromatic. The aroma was similar to a classic chocolate/sweet mixture along the lines of Lane's 1Q, but with a sour cardboard blandness that developed over a few days.
The cut and moisture was immediately ready to make the jump into the bowl and required little attention once rolling. The lit flavor was unassuming at first, but eventually some of the expected sweetness developed, though the Burley and Cavendish remained hidden, so I wasn't sure what the point of smoking it was. At times, I also got a mild bite from what felt like a chemical burn, which was odd since the nicotine level was very light.
Everything about Abacus was doable, it got the job like a bagged lunch with the same sandwich you've seen before.

I'm a fan of anything hazelnut, so had to give this blend a try. The initial PN reminded me of Cult's vanilla blend, Anonymous, as the cocoa and vanilla notes are right up in front. I was a little concerned that the smoke would be similar which wouldn't be the worst thing, but was looking for something with more body and some tobacco taste. True light brought the chocolate and vanilla toppings which was ok. The smoke had good consistency and mouth feel was smooth. I didn't taste too much "hazelnut" until after a relight where I then got the nuttiness from the Burley which helped coax out the hazelnut topping. There was some flares of citrus rind from the Virginia which compliments the dark chocolate nuttiness. I enjoyed this blend a 1/2 star more than anonymous based on more tobacco notes and a deeper more complex flavor note. 3.5 stars from me

This is a good product. I found the moisture content was correct for an aromatic when I opened the tin. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the tobacco was not too tightly packed in the tin which is a consistent problem in circular tins of this size (in my opinion). The tobacco is visually appealing and has a lovely sweet aroma. I think freshly baked cookies accurately describes the tin aroma. This tobacco is mild and presents the common characteristics of good all-day American blends. The flavoring is present, but not overpowering. There are hints of vanilla and cocoa, but a hazelnut flavor dominates the experience. It provides a pleasant, sweet fragrance. This tobacco does not bite and remained pleasant as I smoked three bowls while doing yard work. I did not clean my pipe in between bowls and it continues to smoke dry and provide a mild, sweet, fairly monotone flavor. It leaves a sweet tobacco scent in the mustache. Not a show-stopper, this is still a good offering and I will happily continue to work my way through the tin although I’m not convinced this will enter my regular rotation alongside Amphora, 1Q, and MV1000.

I am really enjoying this blend, I was really hoping it wasn't going to be too "aromatic" ( syrupy ), and I was not disappointed. It has a nice sweet nutty flavour. It is also nice and mild. Definitely an after dinner bowl, or probably anytime a day smoke. Try it

Abacus is my kind of aromatic. when you open the tin it looks like tobacco, not something dug from the swamp. It has a soft and pleasant aroma of chocolate cake. It doesn't demand anything from you but will satisfy when you ask it to. Abacus smokes very nicely and will leave you satisfied if you don't ask it to be what it isn't. This weed is best smoked while engaged in other endeavors. If you start to analyze this one you will start in on the woulda shoulda couldas leaving you less satisfied with what you have. This is the best tobacco for tinkering while smoking, or vice versa.
